The cover of Cod by Mark Kurlansky

So what’s a vegetarian doing reading a book that has a huge number of codfish recipes and the history of a fish based on the public desire to eat it?

Because for the most part the story is bloody interesting!

Mark Kurlansky writes about the history of Codfish and how it has shaped industry and whole countries throughout the ages.  It’s a fascinating look at how the simple codfish became a commodity …

Over recent years I stopped watching a lot of reality television, I used to enjoy Survivor and The Amazing Race for numerous reasons that I won’t bother going into here but I bored of them after a while and pretty much swore off them (this is not an opening for you reality TV snobs to spit your bile everywhere – we know that a lot of reality TV is absolute trash so no need to act superior about it).

Tracey and I have however been watching MasterChef Australia, which for my international readership that might not know of it, is a cooking show where amateur chefs compete in cooking challenges etc.

I admit the show has sucked me in, we have favourites and of course villains but the best part of the show isn’t even on the show!

Double choc brownies with double cream and strawberries

You see Tracey and I were eating really poorly, same meals over and over, really poor processed junk, yes even vegetarians can eat badly!  Now after watching MasterChef we’ve been encouraged to plan out our meals and eat better, the dessert above is a prime example of this, double choc brownie with double cream and strawberries.  Yeah sure it’s probably not healthy but damn it tastes nice and it’s a lot better than some chocolate bar for dessert!

Two other meals that I’ve done over the last two nights:

Sweet potato frittata with tomato salsa

That’s Sweet potato frittata with tomato salsa – everything from scratch including the salsa (thank you chef Ramsey).

Spiced lentil soup

The other meal (tonight’s) was a spiced lentil soup served with a simple flat bread, again everything was made from scratch and I even got to use my coriander that Baxter has been guarding.

I think one of the smartest moves of the show was to put it on at dinner time, so for the last couple of weeks when we had pizza over and over again there was natural jealousy of what they were making on television.  I’ve always loved cooking and yet just haven’t been making the time for it.  It’s also been fun watching people’s reactions on Twitter.

Now to open my comic book themed restaurant!  (G’nort garden salads?)

Quit Your Day Job can be a misleading title for a blog, so before we get too far into this I want to say very clear that this blog will not show you the way to leave your day job or provide you with financial freedom. There are no doubt a million blogs that will give you advice on that, I can’t.

What you will find on this site are my thoughts on popular culture and stuff (stuff covers all manner of sins).

Lee Sargent with the right hand of doomWhat the hell is with the title then?

The title of this blog comes from a Tenacious D song where Jack black suggests that you should quit your day job and practice your craft.

That’s what I did.

I had a day job working in a call centre. It was going to be a temporary thing whilst I paid some bills and stuff. Nearly two years later I called it quits. I decided to go back to web design, this time do it right and focus on the craft itself and not so much on where the next client is coming from. I’m writing and drawing/painting, generally being creative.

Well that worked out nicely for a little while but as it always does, money threw a spanner in the works and in order to buy art supplies and comics and dvds one needs a steady income.

So I went out and contracted and then have settled in a challenging and exciting role with the government to fill in my daylight hours and spend the rest of my time just doing my thing.

So who is Lee?

Well me, I suppose. I’m 32, vegetarian, diabetic, a science fiction freak, comic book geek, married to a wonderful woman who is very much the yin to my yang, we have one dog, one bird, and an extraordinary book and dvd library.

Just warning you that there are some pretty adult lyrics in this song, but I dig it:
