… last week’s podcast that I’ll be giving this weekend’s podcast a miss as I had an awful lot of material to cover for the topic: Video game film adaptations.  In case anyone wants to play along at home I am watching (hopefully):

Double Dragon

Street Fighter

Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li

Mortal Kombat

Mortal Kombat 2

Super Mario Brothers

Wing Commander

I honestly am not sure if I will get through them all as I’ve had a little bother with my ear and it’s …

Everyone is doing their end of year lists and with only one last film that I’m seeing in the cinema this year left (Sherlock Holmes) I think it might be safe to put my best of list together.  I promise tomorrow’s post will not be about movies, but I can’t promise anything for the next day.

Actually that reminds me, if you haven’t had your fill of movie talk you should go and check out the Midnight Movie Club where QYDJ regular Dan and I talk about the Christmas movie Scrooged!

Now this list is kind of in order, certainly the number one film is the number one film for me this year but the others could probably be shuffled depending on my mood :)

  1. Star Trek - Perfect reboot to my most loved of science fiction series, I still remember seeing the very first teaser poster that had the Starfleet/Enterprise insignia against the colours of command and science.  Even then I had a really good feeling that it was going to go in the right direction and the film certainly delivered.  Can’t wait for a sequel!
  2. Avatar - All the hype, the long wait and the budget were so worth it.  I’ve already declared my undying love for this film.
  3. Moon - I can’t get over how ridiculously brilliant this film is and what an absolute joy that Sam Rockwell is in his performance.  If you didn’t like him before this film then this should convince you as he completely carries the film and is damn good whilst doing so.
  4. District 9 - OMFG what a great year for science fiction!!! This film was a perfect example of great science fiction examining our own world issues and just setting them in a speculative fictional situation.  It was also extraordinary how they introduced a truly unlikeable “hero” that doesn’t make you hate the film.
  5. Zombieland - I can pretty much take or leave most zombie films now days, whilst zombies are still pretty neat the idea of them is becoming a little over saturated for my liking.  But Zombieland was a breath of fresh air with a Ghostbusters homage which honestly would help any film.  As zombies films go this was really witty and in my own opinion has dethroned Shaun of the Dead.

Other notable mentions include: Where the Wilds Things Are, The Hangover, Black Dynamite and to show how close it was Up was originally in the list:

Pixar are simply the best at what they do and Up was no different, 3D certainly doesn’t hurt a film but this was just a wonderful tale about how you shouldn’t put your dreams off and even if you do it is never too late to chase them… unless you die, then it’s too late, so go back to the first lesson…

There are probably a bunch more but these are the ones that came to mind.

So what were your favourite films of this year?

Wow it’s been so busy this week!!  It’s not bad busy so much but I am conscious that there are limited hours in the day and I don’t think this pace can continue without something suffering.

So it’ll be exciting to see what ‘that’ winds up being :P

Of course the week was made a little easier, at least here in blog land by a couple of excellent guest posts that generated some really cool discussions which is always the sign of awesome.  Sujoy and Suzie wrote about Doctor Who and Red Dwarf thus declaring last week British science fiction week, so next week will we be talking about Blake’s 7?

Over on Suzie’s blog she is celebrating her one year anniversary for the site which is a great milestone considering that most blogs die within the first month.  Whilst on his blog SG-3 has picked up the blog writing tools after a break to discuss his disappointment with the big screen adaptation of Where the Wild Things Are.

Sujoy also reviewed the first episode of the new Doctor Who which if you liked his take on The Beast Below you should check out his look at The Eleventh Hour.

Over on Mashing Buttons I’ve been taking a quick look at God of War III and Greg has been pondering the role of family in the horror game series of Bioshock.  Greg has also found the time to illustrate how his musical tastes are of an excellent nature.

Matt and I have been working very hard to put together a couple of blog posts about the appalling situation regarding the lack of an R18+ rating for Australia.  I’m letting the side down unfortunately as I just haven’t had the chance to piece together some coherent thoughts.

Over on his blog though he has been talking about the end of Ugly Betty which is a show I started watching in the beginning and drifted away.

Dan has been gathering requests for Big Trouble in Little China on Twitter for the Midnight Movie Club whilst last week I handled the podcast on my own (with a little help from Matt).  This weeks is an absolute joy because we rang Arjan out of the blue and I didn’t watch the movie so we wound up chatting about stuff and taking requests from Twitter.  Dan had some thoughts about Doctor Who which I don’t think I’ve linked to yet either.

Arjan has also been continuing on the Saturday music video tradition despite my own slackness.

I’ve been publishing on and off at my new social media blog Social Matters (at least go look at the ninja, robot, viking and pirate pics) and I’ve been working on my portfolio.

Can’t wait to see what this week brings!!!
