I saw some pretty awesome films at the Brisbane International Film Festival, there was only one that I didn’t like but then I didn’t hate it either and found it worthwhile watching at least to have seen it and its wonderful cinematography.

One of the films that I did like was ‘Les Amants’ or ‘The Lovers’ directed by Louis Malle, it’s a French film made in 1958.  It was just a real joy to see a black and white film …

I thought to myself, even if this episode is a weak filler like every single episode since the second one I’m going to keep with it, I’m sure at some stage or the other the show will become interesting and live up to some of the promise made in the pilot.

But the I accidental saw some of the one line descriptions of upcoming episodes and a prominent keyword in each of those is ‘flashback’.  So I really don’t know if I can do this any more, I mean I’m not even disappointed anymore, I expect the next episode to be crap and frankly they are fulfilling that expectation.

So the other week we highlighted the stupid and exploitative scene where the nerds used a keno to check out the officer with the large breasts (honestly it is so annoying that this is all I’ve got to describe this character – the writers REALLY suck).  A guy I work with had a really good point about the scene, the way that Young as the commanding officer handled it, rather than create a non sexist working environment and making sure that the two idiots knew that the behaviour would not be accepted he took on a boys will be boys kind of attitude and let it slide.

It doesn’t surprise me then, when we get to the episode ‘Earth’ so named because the writers are trying to be cool with their episode titles that the characters including Young act in such a morally reprehensible and inappropriate fashion with the borrowed bodies on Earth.

I’m sorry I know it is just a story device but to take someone else’s body and then go and have sex with someone!?!?!? You don’t know anything about that person, what if they have a disease, what if the person you are having sex with has a disease!?!  I can’t even articulate the level of inappropriateness of this!

I thought it was bad enough using their bodies to go out drinking, what if they were alcoholics?  Or have a condition?  What if they just get drunk and fall down??  It’s so stupid.

It’s bad writing.

What did we learn this week?

  • Jack O’Neal looks bloody terrible!
  • Jack O’Neal sounds bloody terrible!
  • Jack O’Neal looks and sounds like he doesn’t want to be there, I know how he feels.
  • Oh cool the guy from 24 is there… OMG is this a crossover!?!?!  Could Jack Bauer be on soon!!!
  • No it is not a 24 crossover.
  • You know what this show needs more of?  Talking.
  • Not.
  • You know what else this show needs more of?  Communication stones.
  • NOT.
  • Apparently they DO need some HR directives for people to follow… or BETTER WRITERS!!!
  • When someone you work with visits your mother apparently it’s not weird at all and they’ll make cookies!?!?!?
  • There is WAY too much back story in these characters maybe we could have some current story??
  • Young has become THAT GUY, you know, the awful ex.
  • Lou Diamond Phillips’ character is just an unpleasant to watch jerk, I thought the Wraith were lame but sheesh.
  • Oh look, they went to a club in Stargate… how much did that cost, maybe next time we don’t go to the expense of building a club set and filling it and we hire better writers.
  • I think Eli was driving a Porche?   I could be wrong, it doesn’t make any sense… oh that’s right worst writing ever.
  • I really enjoy the Eli and Young Big Brother show.
  • NOT!!

Seriously does anyone think this show is really good?  Better than SG1, hell better than Atlantis??  Because they cancelled Atlantis to produce this lame crap.

stargate universe castAs I write this I’ve just come off a couple of hours marathon of Stargate SG1 where I finally finished revisiting the entire ten seasons.  That’s a lot of Stargate let me tell you!  But ultimately it was worth it because prior to watching it over I didn’t really care for SG1 all that much and mistakenly had written it off as a planet-of-the-week show.  It handled over arcing story lines quite well and even corrected mistakes it had made in the earlier episodes (three shots and you disintegrate…).  So I’m feeling a little bit of a Stargate expert, having now recently watched all of SG1, Atlantis and even sitting through three episodes of Stargate: Infinity.

I thought I might make some guesses then about the upcoming Stargate Universe show based purely on the trailers and footage I’ve seen:

  1. Lou Diamond Phillip’s character is going to die within the first season if not the first couple of episodes – the precedent here is probably Robert Patrick’s role in Stargate Atlantis, a kind of big genre star playing an irritant military guy who is too gruff to live in the Stargate world.
  2. The ship that they’ve been transported to is falling apart or something, I suggest that they’ll have the majority of the falling apart aspects sorted by the tenth episode and then the damage to the ship will only rise up as a plot device every once and a while when they want to save money by filming entirely on set.
  3. Friction between the military and the civilians/scientists… yawn.  It was kind of a theme every once and a while on Atlantis, it never really interested me but conflict means drama.
  4. The brilliant geek guy with the hoodie will solve problems at the last minute just because one of the military types will yell at him to do it even though it’s impossible… I know I’m really shooting fish in a barrel with that one. But I figure it will probably be the idea that the ship can’t stop so they only have a finite amount of time on each planet, he’ll find a way to override that when it’s convenient to the storyline.
  5. One alien joins the crew, somehow some alien dude or woman will be introduced to the recurring cast, maybe not even in the first season but at some stage an alien will join the crew.  But only one, it won’t be a group of them or refugees or another ship, too hard to integrate into the show which is a shame because change can be good.

I know these predictions are all mainly negative observations/guesses but I am approaching this show with a huge amount of caution.  Atlantis really burnt me towards the end with its five fillers and then one good episode policy and I think they missed what could have been some really interesting science fiction.  I’m also noticing the shadow of Star Trek Voyager floating around, it’s hard not to compare the two and I hope the writers pay attention to the problems that show faced in its narrative.

Oh and I also think that the whole darker, grittier, more political, bleaker Battlestar Galactica formula has also been peeked at and not necessarily for the better. Oh yeah that’s right I don’t think BG is the greatest science fiction show ever, not by a long shot!

But I am hopeful, cautiously hopeful that SGU will be awesome and I’m happy if none of these predictions come true, more than anything I’d love them to surprise me.

Bonus sixth prediction: Flashbacks, lots of flashbacks.

So what are your predictions for Stargate: Universe?
