… Well, happy days.

I had hoped for this to happen and it finally did.

A really good episode of Stargate: Universe.

I know.

It shocked me too.

But this episode rocked and was clever and made me like some of the characters.

Busy day, so I’ll come back and talk more at length later, but I thought I should acknowledge it!

*** update – I think we can discuss the episode in the comments rather than do another post…

I thought to myself, even if this episode is a weak filler like every single episode since the second one I’m going to keep with it, I’m sure at some stage or the other the show will become interesting and live up to some of the promise made in the pilot.

But the I accidental saw some of the one line descriptions of upcoming episodes and a prominent keyword in each of those is ‘flashback’.  So I really don’t know if I can do this any more, I mean I’m not even disappointed anymore, I expect the next episode to be crap and frankly they are fulfilling that expectation.

So the other week we highlighted the stupid and exploitative scene where the nerds used a keno to check out the officer with the large breasts (honestly it is so annoying that this is all I’ve got to describe this character – the writers REALLY suck).  A guy I work with had a really good point about the scene, the way that Young as the commanding officer handled it, rather than create a non sexist working environment and making sure that the two idiots knew that the behaviour would not be accepted he took on a boys will be boys kind of attitude and let it slide.

It doesn’t surprise me then, when we get to the episode ‘Earth’ so named because the writers are trying to be cool with their episode titles that the characters including Young act in such a morally reprehensible and inappropriate fashion with the borrowed bodies on Earth.

I’m sorry I know it is just a story device but to take someone else’s body and then go and have sex with someone!?!?!? You don’t know anything about that person, what if they have a disease, what if the person you are having sex with has a disease!?!  I can’t even articulate the level of inappropriateness of this!

I thought it was bad enough using their bodies to go out drinking, what if they were alcoholics?  Or have a condition?  What if they just get drunk and fall down??  It’s so stupid.

It’s bad writing.

What did we learn this week?

  • Jack O’Neal looks bloody terrible!
  • Jack O’Neal sounds bloody terrible!
  • Jack O’Neal looks and sounds like he doesn’t want to be there, I know how he feels.
  • Oh cool the guy from 24 is there… OMG is this a crossover!?!?!  Could Jack Bauer be on soon!!!
  • No it is not a 24 crossover.
  • You know what this show needs more of?  Talking.
  • Not.
  • You know what else this show needs more of?  Communication stones.
  • NOT.
  • Apparently they DO need some HR directives for people to follow… or BETTER WRITERS!!!
  • When someone you work with visits your mother apparently it’s not weird at all and they’ll make cookies!?!?!?
  • There is WAY too much back story in these characters maybe we could have some current story??
  • Young has become THAT GUY, you know, the awful ex.
  • Lou Diamond Phillips’ character is just an unpleasant to watch jerk, I thought the Wraith were lame but sheesh.
  • Oh look, they went to a club in Stargate… how much did that cost, maybe next time we don’t go to the expense of building a club set and filling it and we hire better writers.
  • I think Eli was driving a Porche?   I could be wrong, it doesn’t make any sense… oh that’s right worst writing ever.
  • I really enjoy the Eli and Young Big Brother show.
  • NOT!!

Seriously does anyone think this show is really good?  Better than SG1, hell better than Atlantis??  Because they cancelled Atlantis to produce this lame crap.

We were pretty harsh on Air part 3 last week, I expect it was because the first two episodes were so full of promise and we’ve been supplied with such average Stargate material for so long.  So when a filler episode showed up in the second week it hurt, a lot.

Action, excitement, innovative ways to develop characters and an exciting storyline.

These are not qualities to be found in the Stargate Universe episode Darkness.  In fact I sought out the promo for this episode just to see how the hell they marketed it:

Oh yeah they managed to make that look real tense and exciting… actually I’m a poor judge since seeing the episode, if you break that preview down it all amounts to some tense music and I don’t even think they had that in the episode.

Spoilers to follow, you’ve been warned, twice.

So this episode was marginally better than the last one, which isn’t really saying that much but maybe we can say at least they are trying… forget it.  There were some really strong scenes in the beginning of the episode where the commander guy with the busted up knee had some really cool briefings with the crew/survivors.  The scenes felt really natural and actually made me interested in the day to day running of the ship and what they are doing.

Of course my now least favourite character in Stargate history Dr Rush shows up and apparently no one but him can do anything at all, his standing around staring at consoles is such riveting stuff I dearly hope the powers that be continue to follow that.

So what did we learn this week:

  • Nothing at all about last weeks shuttle taking off
  • Dr Rush is an unbelievably giant jerk who is unpleasant to watch.
  • That the commanding dude, who if next week’s show is better I’ll bother to learn his name is a cool leader who makes people naturally laugh at staff briefings.
  • Lou Diamond Phillip’s character is a big jerk too (I don’t know if Lou himself is a jerk so I won’t speculate)
  • The chef has his work cut out for him.
  • That Eli is a completely bearable character who I actually don’t mind, however, he does need to stop playing with those balls… umm that’s isn’t… nevermind.
  • That the woman with large breasts is a woman with really large breasts, I don’t say this to diminish her in any way shape or form I just wish the producers wouldn’t and I’m surprised that they didn’t use the hallway shot in the promo.
  • I don’t even care what the medic’s problem is or why she quit, I actually want them to reveal it just to stop the hints at it, I mean really guys, subtle much!?!?
  • Skimming a gas giant is not as cool as seeing the Serenity fire up her engines on half the budget.
  • The senator’s daughter is a poor man’s Summer Glau
  • They can’t fix the power problems but they can get the plate to recharge torches… dudes!? Really??
  • The cliff hanger is pretty weak, I don’t expect them to plunge into the sun like Disaster Area’s Stuntship*

I’m willing to go out on a limb here and suggest that maybe some new blood in the producing and directing area might be called for, none of this feels very fresh right now… oh scratch that, last time someone else took over Stargate we got Stargate Infinity… shudder.

So what did you guys think this week?  Am I being too harsh?  Any things that you learnt?

*If you got the reference then you are a hitch-hiker geek!!
