So the other day I made up a batch of pesto to have with pasta, the pesto had pine nuts in it.

Had I been made aware of the following excerpt from the wikipedia page reagarding pine nuts I may not have done this:

Risks of eating pine nuts

The eating of pine nuts can cause serious taste disturbances, developing 1-3 days after consumption and lasting for days or weeks. A bitter, metallic taste is described. In general, a minority of pine nuts on the market present …

I had a remarkably random thought the other day when observing a train station attendant, he had no walkie talkie but had a cheap Nokia phone hanging off his shirt.  The reason why this stood out for me was that the previous day I had seen a security guard once again without a walkie talkie but with another cheap phone dangling from his belt.

mcclane and a walkie talkieI should say too that when I refer to a ‘cheap Nokia’ I’m not passing judgement about the quality of the phone I am speaking quite literally as these phones are quite inexpensive these days.

So anyway here are two professions that in the past the walkie talkie would have been the best possible way of communicating on site, who no longer use them in favour of mobile phones that probably work just as well if not better.

Which led me to consider the demise of the walkie talkie.

I mean I’m sure there are professions that will continue to use them because it makes sense, I was surprised that the security guy didn’t have one after all.  But me big concern is for terrorist outfits trying to steal large sums of money from corporations.  Imagine if in Die Hard instead of the walkie talkies that John McClane was able to get in on that they had mobile phones?  He wouldn’t have been able to listen in and get all their names and when he finally spoke to them he wouldn’t have been able to be all bad ass and drop all those names into the conversation.

It was bad enough in Die Hard 2: Die Harder when the walkie talkies were locked but if the terrorists were texting each other!!

Ladies n gents, due 2 d Nakatomi Corporation’s legacy of greed arnd d globe, itz abt2 B tawt a lessn on real pwr. u… wl B witnesses.*

That would be confusing even if you had the mobile phone!

So again to bring me back to my original thoughts I wonder if there will be a time where mobile phones are that cheap and disposable that they will completely eliminate the old walkie talkies that looked really cool?

Tracey and I bought a Christmas tree a couple of years into our marriage, we bought a really good one that I would proudly put together each year like I was actually handy or something (generally I’m not a handy man although since buying a house I have become a little handier).

Then in some of our more recent disastrous moves the tree disappeared and we have no idea what happened to it.  So we’ve discussed over the last couple of weeks if we are going to get all festive and stuff and buy another tree and decorate the house.

Our last Christmas wasn’t so crash hot, with the problems we had buying and moving in and then with Memphis getting sick there wasn’t so much joy.

The commercialism of Christmas is what often puts me off so it is ironic that buying something is potentially going to be the catalyst for us getting into the Christmas spirit (at least decoration wise).

I give you, the Ecto 1 Christmas decoration:

ecto 1 christmas ornamentIt’s beautiful.

It even plays the Ghostbusters song, none of these cheap nasty Christmas carols.

Of course it should be noted that I have a LOT of similar Star Trek ornaments from Hallmark that I’ve never been able to use and the Serenity ones as well, but this ornament is just special and I must have it.
