… improved, why else would they give them the contract back?
WHY?!?!
The new and improved phaser in the Star Trek film is really neat and a nice update on a familiar design, the visible flipping from stun to kill was also a cool little addition.
The Playmates replica phaser is a tacky looking chrome covered plastic disappointment. It just looks cheap. And I at least want my replicas to look vaguely like I can display them rather than closing the office door and pretending …

A little while ago I posted the poster with all the pop culture weapons for everyone to guess and I felt I was only two off.
Well I wasn’t, I was about four or five off.
But I did get the fork from Army of Darkness which I think was pretty impressive.
It was very cool though because there were some fun email conversations that went on behind the scenes so as not to spoil the competition.

I’ve been talking a fair bit on Twitter about Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in preparation for this weekend’s Ninja Turtle flavoured podcast (in fact I’m watching TMNT2 as I type this) and over here I’ve been talking toys a bit with my take on the Ghostbusters range and last week the Star Trek toys.
With that in mind I remembered a toy mashup that I have trouble believing was ever for sale in mass production, I did see them in the store with my own peepers though.
The Star Trek Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles toys:

I have no idea how this was ever pitched as a good idea, it seems like a misplaced gimmick more suited to the Spider-Man toylines, sorry Rol but you’ve got to know that there are some wacky Spider-Man toys out there.
I checked out the promotional material related to the toys that tells the story of how the Turtles were watching Star Trek, which according to this is indeed their favourite shows and a lightning bolt transported them to the Starship Enterprise in the roles of Kirk, Spock, McCoy and Scott.
A spacey spin on a kowabunga classic!
I’m also pretty sure that kowabunga is spelt with a c.
Remember the podcast this weekend!
