All things going to plan we should be sitting in the 10:30pm showing of Black Dynamite as this post is published. I think this is the film I’m most looking forward to behind Moon in the festival:
This shit looks tight!

As this post goes live (should be around 6:15 pm Friday night Brisbane time) Tracey and I would have just sat down to watch our first movie in the Brisbane International Film Festival which is the movie The Missing Person.
Now I’m not going to be Twittering from the cinema because I think that’s pretty average behaviour but I will no doubt tweet my thoughts straight after whilst we wait to for the following film to start so if you are around why not check them out.
The Missing Person looks interesting because they are trying to capture that detective noir feel which you don’t generally get to see anymore. It’s one of those styles/genres that I assume I’d like but I don’t get to see all that often so this will be an interesting test.
I’ll post a review in the coming days anyway.
The big anticipation for me this year was obviously Star Trek and last year it was Iron Man, next year I suspect it will be Iron Man 2. But even though the film that I was most hanging out to see this year has come and gone there is still a lot of 2009 film going left.
Five films that are coming out this year that I’m looking forward to are:
- Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen
- Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
- Moon
- G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra
- District 9
- Ponyo
- Inglourious Basterds
- 9
- Avatar (no trailer yet)
- Sherlock Holmes
I want to see Transformers 2 despite really disliking the first one to see if any improvements have been made, I mean it looks really fantastic special effects wise, so who knows, maybe I’ll warm to the next generation’s Transformers. G.I. Joe is on the list purely for interest sake, I’ve never been a significant fan of the franchise (?) but it looks as though it may be a bit of fun, I wonder how far they’ll take any of the violence etc.
Having finally watched the Harry Potter film that I missed seeing for some reason (which, I may add I’m still not sure how I missed it since Tracey had seen it), I was reminded of how much I really enjoyed those films and the books and so it will b nice to go see an old friend.
Studio Ghibli produces the best animated films in the world and even though Disney is slapping their name on Ponyo I see no reason why this won’t continue to be so.
Moon looks interesting and quite a departure from the flashy science fiction of Star Trek, if you haven’t seen the trailer you should go check it out because it looks really intense. District 9 also looks to be a neat scifi movie, I watched the original short film on youTube and thought that would make a cool film and hey they delivered!
Avatar is either going to be hugely awesome and amazing and mind blowing or it will be The Abyss…
…I’m kidding, I love The Abyss. Avatar is just putting so much anticipation out there that it’s hard to believe that it could be as good as its promise, but it will be pretty good if it does! I’ve been avoiding much to do with it and have only a vague sense of what it is about, although the 3D aspect is… well I was going to say interesting but to be honest I can’t say I’m all that interested in 3D.
The second film in my list to have 9 in it of course is 9 (apparently there is a Nicole Kidman film called ‘Nine’ coming out but I doubt that I’ll accidentally see that). 9 is along the lines of the stop motion look and feel of Tim Burton’s Nightmare Before Christmas. I think it looks really interesting.
Inglourious Basterds is a must see, looks like a great cast and even though Tarantino has swung and missed in the past, it has been rare and not that bad anyway. So what I’m saying here is that even if it isn’t his best work, it certainly won’t be awful.
And finally we have Sherlock Holmes, which judging by the trailer looks like a lot of fun despite having Jude Law in it. Robert Downey Jr has been on a bit of a roll with Tropic Thunder and of course Iron Man so I’m reasonably confident that this should be alright.
