… media professional I must admit that there are times, long, dark times that I really don’t get Facebook, no I mean I get what Facebook does and is and how it can be leveraged to help you promote yourself and to keep in contact with friends and all that stuff.

Personally though I really don’t use Facebook well.  There has been times when I have shut down my account and then come back to it feeling like I’m ready to start fresh with the service and of course you don’t because the …

Everything at work has gone from zero to about a bizillion gazillion in the past three weeks so I’ve not had much of a chance to do anything except take some quick breathers and churn out some material for my other commitments!

Kick Ass competition

First up I want to remind everyone of the Kick Ass competition that is finishing up this coming Monday (16th) and a couple of days after that the movie itself comes out on DVD and Blu-ray here in Australia.  I’ve been told by the guys at Universal that the canvas print has come up looking sweet so if you are in Australia you should get in on this!!  A bunch of people have tweeted the competition so if you want to double your chances you should head on over to the Quit Your Day Job Facebook page and throw it a like and a quick message to get a second entry!!

Check out the competition here.

QYDJ on Facebook

Mentioning the Quit Your Day Job Facebook page I wanted to touch base with everyone and find out what people would like to see via a Facebook page.  Obviously I don’t really want to divert any more content from here than already is through my involvement with other blogs and stuff but I don’t want an empty page either.  If anyone has any suggestions or seen other blogs running really cool Facebook pages let me know!!

Die Hard With A Vengeance

Whenever Dan and I do a podcast for the Midnight Movie Club more often than not I come away thinking it hasn’t been so good and when it comes out I’m surprised that it’s okay.  That’s the way it is again this week as we look at Die Hard With a Vengeance.

Coalition of Awesomeness

Over at the COA the theme this week is “cancellations” and there is some great discussions and thoughts going on:

If you take a look at the previous post on this blog you will see that I embedded a music video on my site via YouTube to share the fact that the Columbia Records band AC/DC were providing the music to the upcoming Marvel Studios film Iron Man 2.

Now I’ll tell you why I embedded the video before I cover my thoughts on it being stupidly barred from embedding.

A lot of you guys and girls read my blog because I talk about things that interest you, much in the same way that if we were to sit down to have a cup of coffee one day we would no doubt talk about the types of things that are posted here, aside from my scribbles or defacing of Star Wars screen shots.

So because this is how it works I thought you might be interested in a film coming out and in sharing we might get each other more excited about the film and talk to other people about it who in turn would possibly get excited, maybe enough so to share the information on their own blogs and spread the good word even further.

In social media circles I believe there’s a term for that, I think it is something along the lines of viral marketing or if you like word of mouth.

Now this is something that you want, unless of course your movie or song or whatever is really crap.  Then you’d rather not everyday people talking about it because they are going to say bad things and other people will listen to them and possibly pass that word along.

So that is why I embedded a released YouTube video on my page, because I was excited about it and wanted my readers (all three of you) to get excited too.

So what do I think of blocking the material from being embedded?

I think it’s a dumb move by whoever is responsible.  Basically you are putting a roadblock in front of my ability to make other people excited and aware of your material.  You know, people who will tell other people who will tell other people and so forth.

You basically look like dicks.

You make me look like a dick because I used my good will with my readers.

And that is dumb.

So in the spirit of viral promotion it would be awesome if you guys were to retweet this, share it on Facebook, Stumble it, Digg it and hang over your neighbour’s fence and tell them to come read!  Oh and tell them to tell someone too :)
