I wrote a really long piece about Shatner’s and the fan’s behaviour regarding his involvement in the new Star Trek film, it made me really mad, made me not like Shatner, made me sick of hearing about him, so I deleted it and wrote an abridged version.
JJ Abrams had this very reasonable thing to say about Shatner’s involvement or lack of in the film:
“It was very tricky. We actually had written a scene with him in it that was a flashback kind of thing, but the truth is, it didn’t quite feel right. The bigger thing was that he was very vocal that he didn’t want to do a cameo. We tried desperately to put him in the movie, but he was making it very clear that he wanted the movie to focus on him significantly, which, frankly, he deserves. The truth is, the story that we were telling required a certain adherence to the ‘Trek’ canon and consistency of storytelling. It’s funny — a lot of the people who were proclaiming that he must be in this movie were the same people saying it must adhere to canon. Well, his character died on screen. Maybe a smarter group of filmmakers could have figured out how to resolve that.”
All very reasonable in my mind. Â This movie is not about a 77 year old Captain Kirk being brought back to life, it’s about a young Kirk and his crew. Â Shatner apparently is upset because no one offered him a part, well because they never officially had a part I suspect, I mean they tried to write one in but it didn’t work. Â You don’t offer someone a role when you don’t have it, besides which Shatner has been quite vocal in the past and I’m sure in private that he wouldn’t do a cameo. Â So this video makes me like Shatner quite a bit less than I was already starting to. Â I mean really, get a life.
The Ghostbusters theme is stuck in your head isn’t it? Â Don’t worry if you watched both Ghostbusters 1 & 2 then it should only take 2.3 days for the tune to get out of your head. Â Tonight is space night. Â Specifically swashbuckling space night. Â I’m not going to make you sit through any long, deep and heavy scifi tonight - maybe next film festival but tonight I’m going for the good ol’ fashioned round-up.
Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country
Possibly my favourite of the Star Trek films, I love the whole idea of one last hurrah for Captain Kirk and his crew. Â Everyone gets to shine and have a special moment in this film. Â There are some extraordinary moving scenes, powerful scenes and fun. Â I know it’s not nice but it’s always a delight to watch the Enterprise take quite a walloping (Scotty’s words not mine). Â Look out for the torpedo that passes through the main hull and the ever so cool scene when Kirk stands, raises his fist and orders ‘fire’ and of course the moving ending.
Also watch out for the Christian Slater cameo, apparently he was pretty excited to be on set, as I would have too, seeing the old crew in action for the last time.
Serenity
Ok I just mentioned watching the Enterprise taking heavy fire is morbid fun, watching the Serenity slam into the ground is absolute agony but I just love it. Â Serenity is good fun and even if you didn’t watch the series (and shame on you) there should be enough in here to keep you entertained. Â In fact I do wonder what it would be like to watch without bringing any television series baggage in to see it.
It’s classic baddies versus the scallywags who are just trying to stick it to the man.
That about sums it up. Everyone hates the batman mug we have here at home. If you were to come over and were offered a coffee and we gave it to you in the batman mug (notice how I refuse to put a capital in there) you can assume that we don’t like you. Above is a picture of the mug, there is also a beanie toy of Draco from Dragonheart - everyone loves Draco - everyone hates the batman mug - it has a nice balance.
Why do we keep the batman mug?
I do not know.
Who has to drink out of it all the time?
Me.
Even when I make the coffee (which is lot more often than Tracey would lead you to believe) I get stuck with the damn thing. I take artificial sweetener and without thinking every time I’ll drop it into that mug.
I don’t even know how it came to be the most loathed mug in the house. It has batman written on the front and it is essentially the same in all aspects to a number of other coffee mugs that we have around the house. With the dark knights name on it you would think it would turn into a favourite?
I can’t believe that we’re the only ones in the world who have a coffee mug in their house they really hate?
That’s it.
I wanna hear from all those people out there who have a mug or even a plate that they really hate and have no idea why they still own it.
No hang on I’m going to extend it to anything - vases, furniture, paintings - every one of you must have something in your house that you hate but can’t get rid of!!
Leave a comment saying what it is and why if you know, can’t you get rid of it!!! Don’t lurk!!!
And just to show you that I don’t have a hatred towards all mugs here are my two favourites - drool all you want people (you know you want to - stop hating yourselves for it!)
