Super Mario Bros
In all fairness to this film I actually really enjoyed it and if it was on tonight I would probably go a little out of my way to watch it.

Better casting for Mario you could not ask for! Bob Hoskins is perfect for Mario Mario (not a typo). I will credit the producers for not forcing a ridiculously thick Italian accent onto the Mario brothers. It was an interesting take on the whole Mario Bros thing. Making Yoshi a serious dinosaur instead of a colourful little cartoon dinosaur was interesting. But the main thing that makes this film for me is the Goombahs and the Babombs.

The Goombas swaying to the elevator music because all species like to dance and the Reebok symbol on the bottom of the Bob-omb were hilarious. A Roxette soundtrack song and Fisher Stevens to boot this has the makings of a cult film.

Enough of the love-in though.
This is not a good film. It sways from super serious to super ridiculous in an unnatural fashion. I don’t know if I liked Dennis Hopper either. It’s really hard to put my finger on why it’s bad but I know it is!!!

That’s right.
As of midnight tonight I become an adult.
The big three oh.
30.
I’m spending the lead up doing my best not to dwell on the fact that it’s coming. I’m not really in a place that I wanted to be in at this stage of my life but I’m going to use this as a turning point. I heard someone say the other day that 30 is the new 20 and I certainly hope so. There are hints that I’m finding my direction in life and it is soooo not what I expected.
Which is cool.
So no giant celebration plans, I’ll pass the occasion with Tracey and we’ll do something small and nice and maybe some other cool stuff during the week. I may get the Jennifer Garner film Suddenly 30 out from the video store to research it a bit.
But never fear no matter my new found adulthood tomorrow the next installment in the 5 horrible video game list will still appear. Maybe it’ll be M rated with Adult Themes.

Street Fighter
Hours and hours of wasted youth are all coming back to me playing Streetfighter 2 on the Super Nes. Everyone had their favourite characters to play and I think mine was Ryu, I think the more I think about that now perhaps I didn’t have a favourite character LOL. If I did have to pick one though it would’ve been Ryu.
So when I heard that they were filming Street Fighter I was excited, when I heard they filming on the Gold Coast I thought wow that’s really cool. In the end when the film came out and I rushed to the cinema to see it I found that it was neither exciting or really cool.
Jean Claude Van Damme certainly looked the part as Guile and they managed to squeeze some UN related storyline into it. But then Kylie Minogue showed up as a new character for no particular reason. I really feel bad that this was the excellent actor Raul Julia’s last film before he died. Apparently Jean Claude knocked back Mortal Kombat to do this one. I have to say though a lot of the characters looked exactly like their computer game counterparts so it gets full credit for that.
Well the news kind of gets worse it appears that they are looking at either a sequel or a stand alone Street Fighter movie according to Variety quite a while ago. I’m surprised however as IMDB points out:
Despite negative reviews the movie did make a profit. It grossed 33 million domestically and 66 million worldwide, earning almost triple its production budget of 35 million.
Well at least they can only go up!
Is this a worse film than Double Dragon? I dunno that’s a hard one to say what do you guys think?

Video games can be extremely well written and exciting to play. I remember playing Jurassic Park on the Nintendo (I think it may have been the Super NES) and as part of the game you had to walk through the buildings and ships in 3D (like Wolfenstein) wearing night goggles. It was in surround sound and just really atmospheric. Awesome.
Now video game based movies are more often than not really really awful. So with this list I’m not saying that I don’t enjoy watching the film I just know that it is pretty bad.
Double Dragon
I devoted a good many hours playing this with the most basic graphics on the Atari (unlike the PC version which was pretty much like the arcade) and if you’ve seen the Atari version you know how good an imagination I have!!!! Well my imagination isn’t elaborate enough to imagine a good film. Interesting cast with Scott Wolf, Robert Patrick and Alyssa Milano. Ok maybe not that interesting after all.

It’s been a long time since I’ve watched this film because I’d do anything for you guys but I won’t do that… no I won’t do that. Actually I suppose if I had it readily available I’d probably crack it open and have a look. If I remember it correctly they actually tried to cram a storyline in there - which surprised me because who wouldn’t stay glued to a plot involving dudes walking down streets and bashing each other?

A couple of quick questions though, is this the film that things started to go right for Alyssa Milano? Is it the film where everything started to go wrong for Scott Wolf? Do you think Robert Patrick laughed as he cashed his cheque???

Now let me warn you this is not the worst of these films by any means check back for part two!!!

I really love this story. Apparently the Chinese counterfeiters are having a field day by cashing in on the upcoming Spider-man 3. They are selling copies of Spider-man 2 done up to look like the third movie but even more hilarious is that they are also selling Earth Vs The Spider done up to look like Spider-man 3.
Now the copy that the news people bought was sold with the warning that the quality wasn’t very good. No kidding it was Earth Vs The Spider, no quality going on in there!
I’m trying to think of other movies that would add even more insult.
- Dirty Dancing Havana Nights
- The Plague
- The DeVinci Code
- Date Movie
What other films do you think they could have stuck it to people with?

In Smallville Kryptonite of all shapes and colours can be found in your backyard, the lake, the supermarket and hiding behind every hedge waiting to jump out at you in some strange but predictible plot device. In the rest of the world or as I like to call it ‘the real world’ kryptonite is a little harder to come by being fictional and all.
That is till now.
A newly found mineral contains exactly the same elements as the fictional green crystals.
Unlike kryptonite, the real thing is white and powdery, emits no radiation and was found in Serbia rather than outer space.
But US Natural History Museum mineralogist Chris Stanley, who analysed it, was astonished to find its chemical composition matched a description of kryptonite in last year’s Superman Returns, starring Brandon Routh.
In the movie, kryptonite is “sodium lithium boron silicate hydroxide with fluorine”.
Dr Stanley found the new mineral’s chemical formula was the same, only without the fluorine. He named it jadarite.
“We will have to be careful with it - we wouldn’t want to deprive Earth of its most famous superhero,” Dr Stanley said. Source
So in the real world the equivalent for kryptonite looks a little like cocaine.

I kind of missed the whole Batman and Wonder Woman dating thing. I’m pretty certain that the relationship didn’t actually cross over to their individual titles and featured only in JLA. I think it’s interesting how the JLA title seems to run in a universe of it’s own, only ever lightly effecting the other titles unless it’s part of a crossover.
So the Batman and Wonder Woman relationship?
I’m actually kind of a fan of the idea. Batman is of course my favourite character in the DC universe and I guess Wonder Woman is like the popular girl.
Tracey is horrified by the idea pointing out that he should be with Catwoman.

If you’re a Ghostbuster nut job like myself then you would have recognised the line in the title. If you didn’t don’t feel bad it’s the line that Stantz says when he pulls up with the Ectomobile in it’s former run down guise.
And like that moment I too now have a 1984 run down Ectomobile toy that my Mum got imported for my birthday at the end of the month. I know! What am I doing with it early? I just do.

The car is in pretty bad shape, the body appears to be in perfect condition except it is covered in mud or dirt. It’s missing all of its stickers but it does have its original ghost and the claw and chair intact too. The first thing I’m going to do is remove both the claw and chair as they seem stupid to me.
So now what I’m going to do is restore it, it’ll take me a couple of months I imagine but as I said the body is in great condition and I worked out that I can remove everything so that will make spray painting the body a lot easier!
I am torn though.
My first thoughts were to completely refit the model adding extra stuff to it like headlights etc. But now the more I look at it the more I think I want to be a little more subtle and retain a lot of its cartoon charm.
All that means is that I won’t be replacing the spaces for the headlights or changing the grill to silver. What I will still be doing is adding four proton packs into the back and putting flashing leds into the clear emergency lights. I will probably keep my eye out for toy parts to bulk up the top too as right now it’s designed to have the chair stuck to it (????).

I’m surprised at myself, I’m actually looking forward to the Get Smart film. Curse you Anne Hathaway!!!!!!

Actually speaking of Anne we saw The Devil Wears Prada the other night and liked it apart from the ending which didn’t seem to fit. Of course it didn’t hurt that she was going out with Vinnie Chase!!!
I think we agree with Becca over at Pop Culture Heroines.

I think that this site is possibly one of the nicest I’ve seen in a very long time!
