Top 10 Movie Cars - 5 - The Bluesmobile

December 15th, 2006

The BluesmobileAs featured in the 1980 cult classic The Blues Brothers the Bluesmobile is a 1974 Dodge Monaco sedan once used as a Mount Prospect, Illinois police car. Originally the boys had a Cadillac that Elwood traded in for a microphone.

Jake was not too happy with his brother picking him up from “the joint” in a cop car but Elwood points out:

“It’s got a cop motor, a 440-cubic-inch plant. It’s got cop tires, cop suspensions, cop shocks. It’s a model made before catalytic converters so it’ll run good on regular gas”.

During the film the car performs a number of seemingly impossible stunts including a delightful backflip. Unfortunately after the 120 mile trip to Chicago and one of the biggest car chase sequences that I’ve ever seen which included the police, The Good ol Boys and Illinois Nazis the car collapses out front of Daley Plaza with the state tax office (and Stephen Spielberg). It gives up after giving everything that it has to get them there which I wonder if it was a nod towards their mission from God?

Twelve Monacos were used in the film, including the one that was designed to simply fall apart upon its arrival at the Daley Plaza.

None of the cars survived the filming.
