What is it about comic book shops????

December 18th, 2006

Comic book guyI dragged my lovely patient wife into the comic book shop the other day. I’m drawn to the place because it revolves around stuff that I’m really into. I always leave the shop really angry and generally empty handed because it’s hard to justify giving them money and of course their pricing structure.

What makes me angry is that these people are hiding from the real world and they unfortunately give in to every stereotype conceivable. On this particular journey we went into the shop and there were the three “comic book store types” sitting behind the counter. Dressed like they’re in a Kevin Smith film and generally ignoring the two fan boys up the back going through the comic books.

I can’t look at them, I’m already mentally apologising for dragging my wife in there as I turn to look at the figurines. Tracey does her very best to make me feel better about being in here - she points out the V for Vendetta figurines that we didn’t know existed before.

Then the podcast starts being played loudly.

“What’s with the abandoning of the effing numbering system in movies? I mean come on there was rocky 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 but now they’re going to Rocky Balboa? I mean that sounds like the effing first one… blah blah blah effing blah blah Star Trek, Halloween blah effing blah”

I turned to my ever patient lady friend and said ok I’ve had enough lets go and then we went to Toyworld and bought Hellboy figurines.

Back to the comic book shop - firstly it’s a stupid podcast. There are many reasons why the abandon the numbering of film franchises and no I don’t think that people having to ‘research’ the order is too much (arrrrg the fanboy in me wants to argue with him!). Secondly the swearing contained in the podcast is totally inappropriate for a retail store - I’ve been in there before when the ’staff’ have been discussing their Saturday night and were swearing up a storm. I’m no prude when it comes to swearing - I put sailors to shame but there is a time and a place.

Finally the customer service in these places is really bad - it’s more like a hang out for the staff than a place of commerce. I remember many years ago going in and trying to buy an Iron Man comic and the child behind the counter asked if I had seen the preview to Lost in Space and proceeded to give me his best Robot impression. Oh the pain.

Come on fan boys give me your worst cringe worthy experience in a comic book shop or similar!!!

PS I’m thinking of using Kapow more in posts!

I’m going to watch Rocky in a little while and I’ll let ya all know if it is ok - from what I know of the story though I think it’s a clever way of bringing the character back and quite frankly all the negative stuff out there???? It’s a movie, life’s too short too whine too much - if the film is good why not make another without that thought we would not have had Star Trek 6 (the better of them all in my opinion)
