Jedi makes the list

September 14th, 2007

In the ‘I can’t believe that no one hasn’t already suggested it‘ category I am happy to add Return of the Jedi to the list of Sci Fi movies that you just plain enjoy. Thanks goes to IdeaJesse for making the suggestion although you didn’t specify why you want Jedi in there, feel free to leave a comment rectifying that. In the meantime I’ll add my reasons and everyone else is welcome to chime in too!

American jediFor me Jedi is probably all about the memories. Specifically and I know it’s odd but at the time they released a Jedi ice block which had a blue jelly like centre and you could save up tokens in order to get Admiral Ackbar. Whenever I think of ROTJ that’s the first memory that kicks in.

I probably still see it as the weaker of the three originals primarily thanks to the Ewoks but I’ve got to hand it to Lucas - who doesn’t know what an Ewok is! Jedi has a lot of mythology around it and does close off the original trilogy in a satisfying manner. There’s no way the Empire are getting insurance on a third death star!

I am tempted to add the other two films automatically but I’m going to refrain - if anyone else wishes to see them in the list then I suggest you nominate them and give us reasons why!

I thought the list was for the forgotten films, which is why I didn’t suggest the holy trilogy.

    I actually like ewoks.

Dan I did think about that, however I think the list should be open to every sci fi film as long as you can explain why you enjoy it - not that it is important to cinema history or we’re told it’s brilliant. Too many times have I read people saying how Citizen Kane is the greatest film of all time without being to say why.

So feel free to suggest the masterpieces - just be ready to explain why it’s enjoyable!

    I have to nominate Empire…
It has AT-ATs, Yoda, Lando “40oz” Calrissian and probably my second favourite Star Wars bit, when they are fleeing Hoth “Good, our first catch of the day”, watch it again and listen to his accent/pronunciation, hilarious. If that isnt good enough then for the bad ending (by bad i mean not happy like star wars… and no i dont refer to it as new hope no matter how much the marketing dept. hype it), Han is frozen in carbonite, Luke lost a hand (after finding out Vader is his father), C3PO in bits, It certainly looks like the “rebel scum” have crumbled into disarray etc etc
The ending was certainly a revelation for me back then and i still feel it, a movie that doesn’t have a hollywood happy ending, wow, sure it was the second in a trilogy but damn (tho the NZ accent has ruined it, “put ’im in the hold ’ay bro”)

most of the movies i can think of off the top of my head are on the list, but i do have a couple i can add (in no particular order).

Akira (amazing vision of post apocalyptic Japan, can’t believe this isn’t on the list, spent many nights watching a Japanese version of this before subtitles/dubbing)
Stargate (spawned one of the best sci-fi franchises ever, come on it has Macgyver)
Big Trouble in Little China (kinda sci-fi???), (LoPan, Egg Shen, The 3 Lords and if you have Escape from LA you must have this, tho i guess it could be martial arts/fantasy, did i mention the 3 Lords… super cool
Shaun Of The Dead (funny as, that scene with the records, a first pressing of Blue Monday, sacrilege… plus the bit where they try acting like zombies)
Beat Street (awesome robot dancing) im kidding… or am I;)
well thats more than a couple but i do have one more,
Brother From Another Planet, a cult classic, saw this back in the 80s and it really made an impression on me… plus look at what Joe Morton has done since, check his imbd page…
pheww what a post, i would be happy to discuss any of this with you and since i dont have a blog, and im still building my site maybe i could try to design a banner for you? hit me up.

Wow Richo you really are going to need your own blog - you have plenty to say!!!

All I can say with your Empire nomination is you had me at AT-ATs. You had me at AT-ATs.

Akira is another easy one that I’m glad someone has now remembered. I watched it again only six months ago… actually I may have only watched half of it and not gotten back around to watching the end - it’s sometimes hard to remember when you’ve seen a film a few times.

Stargate - I have to admit I almost without checking was going to say this was already on the list. I mean this is an easy one! Say hello to King Tut asshole. God the list would have been lame without this.

Now as for your others I love BTILC as much as the next guy, maybe more actually. But my concern is its sci fi status. I’m not sure I can personally extend the term to include it, so I’m not. The same as Shaun - once again a brilliant film worthy of any list but just not sci fi as such.

Brother From Another Planet I will include though and I’m assuming you’re referring to Joe Morton being in Speed 2.

Thanks for the banner offer but I got it covered - I mean if you really want to put something together you certainly can - if you check the previous sci fi list posts I did have one with Serenity on it.

Finally - robot dancing. Nice one.

yeah, i agree about the negatives, i kinda got caught up in it…
a few others i was talking about this weekend were, logans run (a remake has been kicking around for a while), westworld (arnie was attached before becoming the governator to play the Yul role), and soylent green (which started a conversation on the omega man).
though again the link for them may be tenuous (or you may not like them?), i guess just because its set in the future doesnt necessarily make sci-fi.
i do stand by the first 2 , the robot POV special effects in westworld alone make it sci-fi…
and about Joe, i was refering to T2, but i thought it was hilarious to see he was in who’s the boss;)
i dont want to hog the list tho so dont worry if they arent up to the cut, i do kinda agree with Dan, it should be forgotten movies bar the ones that just have to be on the list… the prob is you only need a small group of people to have alot of those on the list…

Logan’s Run!!!!! I love it. I love it and completely forgot it. It’s got to go on the list. I do hate the weird wild guy living in the library at the end though - I don’t understand it but he really bugs me. That ice robot is fantastic.

Westworld I think is definitely science fiction - it’s such a difficult definition. I would probably even class Crichton’s later Jurassic Park as science fiction too (and may add it to the list after I give it more thought).

Tracey and I were talking about Soylent Green ages ago, i think i made passing reference to it after the Simpsons one night and then it was everywhere - I don’t think she’s seen it so I may have to inflict it upon one Sunday afternoon.

Omega Man, Omega Man… what to do with Omega Man - I’m fairly certain you cooouuld classify that sci fi. I suppose. Once again I’m going to have to look at what is science fiction defined clearly and post about that.

Keep em coming Richo everyone has the opportunity to add to the list so don’t feel like you’re hogging it!!!
