Childhood artefacts

March 27th, 2007

They’re called artefacts, at least that’s what I read that they are called in an article I can no longer find.

The original TMNT cartoonThey are the remnants that we bring with us through our childhood and into adulthood. It is suggested we do this for a reassurance that comes from the familiar. Others say that it is because the the items remind us of a happier time in our lives where things were simple.

It is most certainly now a commercially abused phenomenon. Sometimes for the good and quite often for the bad.

TMNT PosterOver the next couple of days I’m going to check out one of these artefacts from my own childhood that has been revitalised over the past couple of years. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were huge when I was young and firmly planted themselves in growing psyche. The cartoon, the graphic novels and the first movie (the second movie not so embedded LOL “go ninja go ninja go” anyone remember that!).

The was a recent resurge in the cartoon but I can’t say the new cartoon captured the essence of the original much like the new He-Man (another artefact for me) show. But I am intrigued about the new movie that is doing so well at the box office. I’ve watched some of the start and it really got me excited about the promise of it. From what I can tell it is a kind of sequel to the first film. The graphics look great and the voices are top notch - I’m particularly happy to see Buffy herself as April.

Ninja TurtlesSo I’ll let you know what I think when I finally get to see the remainder but from what I’ve seen it has been handled very well.

Now Transformers on the other hand…

Ah, we’re on the same page. I want to see TMNT, but, again, only because am intrigued. Albeit I don’t think it will do too well…

Like you said, Transformers; ha, now we’re talking…

Oh, and Spiderman, and less not forget IronMan!

Hi Nav, TMNT is doing really well as it was number one at the box office so I don’t think there is any risk to it not being a success. My concern is it fulfilling my childhood expectations which recent revivals of cartoons haven’t done.

Transformers is a different problem becuase I think that I want to like it but I am getting very caught up with the fact that they don’t look like generation 1 Transformers. I understand Bumblebee having to change thanks to VW but the robots themselves are so different.

Spiderman is tried and tested - it would have to be extraordinarily bad to drive people away and even then I doubt it wouldn’t make its money back. Of course the Spiderman movies of my childhood leave a lot to be desired (that didn’t help Hulk though) Iron Man is a hard one becuase the comic book has changed so many times and the look of the armour is diverse enough that everyone who is an Iron Man fan will have an opinion.
Ghost Rider lived up to the comic book but was savaged by the critics - I expect this may happen to ol Shell Head (that’s Iron Man for those who don’t read Iron Man).
