Too hot for a cuppa, how bout just a catch up
November 22nd, 2008
It suddenly got real hot here in Brisbane, hot and stormy which is great if you’re looking for a porno name not so grand if it’s the weather. So in today’s catch up we’ll be sipping cool drinks on the back deck rather than hot cups of java.
Now there’s a lot to get through here today so I’m going to just jump in and clear out the draft folder.
Comics
First off I picked up Batman: Cacophony the other day as I was keen to see Kevin Smith’s take on a Batman story. After reading it I’ve decided that I’m pretty much happy to let Kevin Smith stay where he is for me, that’s in the View Askew universe.
A couple of sex jokes/gay innuendos from the Joker and I was pretty much done. Sure I’d laugh if it came out of Jay’s mouth but I just felt it was wrong in the Batman universe. I actually disliked a lot of the normal dialogue too with Batman warbling on about one more innocent he could save or some such, which all just felt forced.
That’s not to say that I hated it all, the Smith created villain Onomatopoeia is genius and I’d love to read his own series. I’m just not going to bother to read part two of this when it comes out. If you are a big Smith fan though it is probably worth the read because it is very much his style, I’m probably too ‘Bat’ up tight to enjoy it.
Something that a few people have also picked up on is that the content is mature to say the least yet there is no warning on the cover, I mean that’s pretty poor form DC, I’m all for mature content but would someone please think of the children.
Books
I read City of Ember in one sitting the other day and it was an absolute treat and I can see why it was made into a movie (a movie I’m now looking forward to), it is a young adult book based in a city that is completely built underground and the infrastructure is starting to fail.
I jumped straight into the sequel, People of Sparks but have since been distracted by the new John Birmingham book Without Warning which is an examination of what would happen to the world if America were to be suddenly wiped out of existence. It is strangely compelling and written really well but I’ve got to try and get it read with seven days (so I can return it to the library).
Games
I’ve been playing a lot of Sim City 4 lately and when I say playing I mean that I’m getting quite involved with the little intricate details of game play. I’ve never been one to actively try and create cities that work well in Sim City and generally resort to money cheats but I’ve been really trying this time
On the PS2 I’ve been playing a bit of X-Men: Legends which is an action role playing type game featuring as you would image the X-Men. I’ve been playing this on and off for ages now, I’ve even got the sequel lined up ready to play as soon as I manage to finish this one (the bloody Morlocks have been driving me crazy). I don’t get the time to play right now considering the living conditions (yes we still live in the one room at Tracey’s Dad’s house, yes we’re hoping this is nearing an end).
On the iPhone though I’ve been playing Klondike 3 - over and over and over.
Posting
Right, so we started the week off with me begging people to subscribe with the promise that posts about Superhero day jobs would follow, they have yet to be forthcoming. I’ve written one, and to be honest it isn’t very good, it’s not good at all actually. So I’m not going to just post words up here, the post at this stage just isn’t working so I’m going to leave it for the time being.
Music
I listened to three brand new albums from established artists the other day and I can’t say I was impressed with any of them, not that they were bad or anything they were just ordinary:
- Guns ‘N’ Roses - This album sounds like Axl Rose singing with another band… oh wait it kind of is. Apparently it cost a fortune to make this album as it kept getting delayed, I can’t hear where that money went because this album is just average and the some of the lyrics are downright awful, to be fair they probably were before too but the music behind them was awesome, this album doesn’t have that.
- Dido - Girl got to find a dude who just makes her happy and doesn’t desert her or have issues so that she can’t be with him because whilst listening to this album I just wanted to curl up with a hot cup of cocoa and shawl around me… the album is not uplifting in any way, so more of the same from Dido
- The Killers - more of the same from The Killers, no stand out tracks but a hell of a lot better than the other two.
The job
I can happily announce that I am once again gainfully employed and am really looking forward to starting work on Monday. It’s a web role with an emphasis on social media (well a hint of it anyway I won’t know how much till next week), it’s a Government role for at least six months and it couldn’t have come along at a better time because no job and home make Lee go crazy and chase cogs around Brisbane.
The house
Plan B is still in effect and looking promising. We have been living in a state of miserable waiting for the past week but we find out Monday. We do also have a Plan B.01 and a Plan C. Plan C is not as much fun but it will be an improvement over the current state of things.
Drawing
I haven’t been doing too much drawing thanks to the strain of ‘the house’ situation but I am currently engaged for two commissions one which I mentioned before and the other I’m putting together a couple of marker drawings of Spider-Man and Batman which I’ll post here in the coming week.
From the interwebs
- Got an award from John which is always appreciated and he’s settling in nicely into his new blogging digs.
- Spent the other night discussing the virtues of porno soundtracks with Arjan my fellow soundtrack nut, I discovered the Children of Dune soundtrack the other day and it is bloody awesome.
- I stopped posting over at Trekweb a while ago because I was sick of the unpleasantness that goes on in the forums (there are a lot of anti-trek trolls who just whine about any new Star Trek coming out) but someone over there said something along the lines of ‘for too long Star Trek was hijacked by the geeks and fanboys and now mainstream is taking it back‘. I can’t find the comment that this was written in but I just love the sentiment.
- I just did a guest post over at the Aussie Bloggers Blog about the film Australia.
Now it is just way too hot to keep writing, so leave a comment and tell me what’s been going on in your worlds!

books: hmm they sound very interesting *notes down the titles*. I jumped into another 40k novel though..
Games: I only ever played Simcity 1 & 2000 *if they’re not the same* on middle school. I just had fun letting everything be destroyed by godzilla.
Music: maybe Dido dóes need to make some more happy music. It also reminds me to dig up some older music of here’s which I did like very much. I didn’t really like the Killers’ ‘are we human or are we dancers’ …haven’t heard the rest.
Job: great news!! That should also help a bit with the house plans I hope.
Drawing: always looking forward to new drawings.
Interwebs: go put that ribbon somewhere! I will try and get the review done this weekend, it’s been a bit of a crazy week. I also got hold of the Children of Dune and inside the same torrent there were a hell of a lot of good ost’s/scores from 2003!
- Startrek: best statement ever.
- Might read up on that movie, untill now I’ve only heard about the title.
btw..have you seen any of the Stargate Worlds trailers?

I get what you’re saying about “superhero day jobs.” I’ve got a series in mind for my blog that just refuses to gel. Frustrating.
Congrats on the job!

Supposed to be snow in central Victoria, tis a tad chilly here!
Australia the movie - as opposed to our home nation - was let down badly by the cast who should have at least had Bruce Spense and Rolf Harris singing about Dimboola, with a wobble board of course
(Can you tell I’m rooly impressed with it? :P)
Good luck with the job, yay for you

You’ve been a busy lad.
PS2 Xmen Legends: what a bugger is R12. The boys are 10 and 9, and LOVE X Men (We have the 3 DVDs)
I was awaiting the Guns ‘n’ Roses album. So you reckon it’s not worth it?
Congratulations on the new job. Mr S. contract is probably going to be stopped now with the new government that is in.
House hunting is a pain.

I might have been a little harsh on the Gunners, it probably isn’t THAT bad.
Fingers crossed for Mr S

I’m not real sure how I feel about the Guns ‘n’ Roses cd yet. Some of it feels too forced, like he was trying to be too different while struggling to retain some of the old vibe. I’m a big fan of Buckethead and Robin Finck, but those guys must have really needed the money. Buckethead’s influence can be picked up on a couple of tracks, but it just doesn’t fit. It’s like what you’d expect of a super group if all the members are pulling in totally opposite directions.
