The new Star Trek trailer deconstructed - part three

November 18th, 2008

OK this is it, the last part of the deconstruction, this is the cool bit, I found Klingons!

The bridge

On first viewing I thought that was Kirk sitting in the Captain’s chair but it isn’t, that’s Captain Pike and Kirk is standing behind him.  Which I think explains why he isn’t wearing command gold at this stage because Pike is still the Captain.

The hallways look great and fit the whole visual design of the film, it’s nice to see Uhura in the thick of the action.

Kirk running through the hallways

I’m willing to bet that this is the time ship that Nimoy’s Spock pilots back in time, it has a slight Starfleet feel to it.

Possibly the time machine

Look I don’t know why Uhura is stripping off, the trailer gives the impression that Kirk is watching her.  That’s not very professional.  I love Scotty in this part of the trailer though, they resisted having him say something like ‘they canna take it Captain’.

Uhura

I’m going to skip ahead quickly now because this section has a lot of scenes from the end fight sequence, a bit of sword fighting and the Enterprise taking off with an explosion behind it.  The cool thing though is that they hinted that Klingons were in the film and the biggest surprise for me is that they are in the trailer!!!

Klingons in the Star Trek film

I suspect that Nero is held captive by the Klingons after the events in Nemesis.

Following is a great line from McCoy who is almost as good as Spock in my opinion, some giant red monster on an ice planet facing Kirk and then we get to see Kirk in command gold.

Kirk in command gold

We then witness the end of the Kelvin as it rams into what I guess is the Romulan ship.  We also get to see what I suspect is Nero’s ship going back in time.

Possibly Nero's ship going back in time

The next scene is Kirk (I think) in bed with someone - for some reason people have said that it is Uhura, it’s not.

Kirk in bed

We also see a scene of what I expect is Kirk’s mother giving birth which I’m surprised would even be in the film (maybe she’s in some other pain?)

Kirk's mother

I don’t think this is a phaser in Kirk’s hands, it looks more like a Klingon disruptor or maybe then it is a Romulan weapon, if it is the phaser they certainly have redesigned it.

Phaser?

So that’s it, obviously there are other scenes I left out but it was getting ridiculously long as it was :)

I think if you know some of the basic storyline you can piece together a fair chunk of the film from the trailer, which I am surprised by considering the secrecy before.

I’m just excited I found the Klingons :P

Since I am a sea-service veteran and a super-nerd I must say what still bugs me is the appearance that all of the TOS crew is together in this. I know it’s not meant to be canon (whatever), but it’s insinuated that this an origin story of sorts, and if they were together at the beginning, the chances of them ever being stationed together are slim to none.

Heck, there were only 38,000 personnel in the USCG and, while I saw some of them occasionally at other units, I was never actually stationed with anybody from my first unit again. Given the potentially immense size of Starfleet…

Why does this bug me? I don’t know, it just does. That being said, it is a pretty, pretty looking film. Except for Kirk’s hair. What is up with that?

Straight away I understand why it bugs you but it’s one of those necessary evils which you can attempt to reconcile if you imagine Star Fleet culture to be different from the navy. The Enterprise is the flagship of Starfleet and the Federation, to serve on the ship is reserved for the best, but there is only one Enterprise (I doubt even all the 12 constitution class ships of the Vanguard have been built at this stage) and it’s been established that the bridge crew is extremely loyal to Kirk and he to them. So this could be an incentive for them to attempt to stay together on the one ship, especially as after this event in canon timeline they will be embarking on their five year mission and we know that after that mission they did separate.

Kirk becoming an Admiral, Spock back to Vulcan, McCoy leaves Starfleet etc. Even after Kirk saves Earth from V’Ger Checkov is still stationed on the Reliant, Spock is in command of the Enterprise, it’s not until Star Trek IV and Kirk gets command of the ‘A’ that he really gets the band back together. In the books which aren’t canon it suggests that Sulu passes up a command in order to shakedown the Enterprise A as a favour to Kirk but then as you see in VI Sulu is a Captain.

Also in this movie I don’t believe that they are all at the academy together, it appears Checkov, Uhura, Sulu and Spock are serving under Pike on the Enterprise and are joined by Kirk, McCoy and Scotty. So it is a coming together film.

The film is within canon. So far I haven’t seen anything or read anything that makes this film not canon, the look and feel are different but then so was the series Enterprise. Original series Star Trek used to break its own canon all the time - people are being too precious about it and frankly I don’t know it was ever specified that the Enterprise was built in space, if so it was a casual mention and a lot more clearly defined facts have been rewritten.

A large chunk of First Contact for instance.

Yeah, I gotta say seeing the Klingons in there was pretty cool.

And stupid me, it never occurred to me that Nero was the same character from Nemesis. What a cool idea! I must seriously be slipping.

I don’t think Nero was actually mentioned in Nemesis but I certainly think he is of that era. It’s too bad that there is a chance we won’t see the Klingons in the film because they cut a Klingon subplot out (might catch a glimpse).

Okay, you’ve been reading some serious spoilers, haven’t you? Aside from the knowledge of a time travel plot involving Spock, I’ve stayed free of any understanding of the plot. Sounds like you’ve got at least a bit more than that.

A lot can be worked out from the trailer though, obviously Nero attacks Vulcan with that giant drill thing, it all looks like a space elevator - so I don’t know maybe Kirk isn’t his target after all?

    Maybe it is Spock?

Fortunately there aren’t any ’serious spoilers’ out there, so all this might be wrong :)

    OMG !!!!

Now you have me all excited.

Karl Urban is in it !!!!!!! SQUEAL SQUEAL, loved him in Riddick.

It actually seems to have an awesome line up.

Got to wait til May 2009 here……

I think Urban was a stroke of genius to play McCoy, he seems to have it completely down without doing a parody of Deforest Kelley’s performace. It was nice to read that he met Deforest’s widow and had a chat with her.

May can’t come quick enough - going to be a late birthday present :)
