The new Enterprise - I like it
November 12th, 2008
I can’t let the day end though without commenting on the first look at the Enterprise for the upcoming Star Trek film.
I love it.
I don’t love it more than the original movie refit but I love it just fine for this new movie. It looks new but there is no mistaking what ship that is.
I’ve pretty much sworn off visiting some of the Star Trek forums now because I am so sick of people whining over how they didn’t somehow pick out the exact image that they had in their own heads for it.
No this isn’t the 1960s Enterprise.
Funny enough this isn’t the 1960s Star Trek either.
I really hate how Star Trek fans can be such self loathers and more than critical. You want to complain about something go watch Indy 4

It is a pretty Enterprise.
I still stand by my entertainment industry critique: find a new idea guys. Star Trek TOS was a wonderful, groundbreaking, enduring series. It was truly the first of its kind. Please stop milking the ST universe and make up something new instead of riding on the coattails of giants.
End rant

I guess I’m going differ on this because of the mythic quality of Star Trek, it would be like saying stop milking the greek and roman myths.
This isn’t like them redoing The Karate Kid and just using the name to hopefully draw some attention.
I would like them to stop milking the franchise with poor technobabble riddled shadows that use the name Star Trek to seel cheap lunchboxes at inflated prices.
I’d don’t think that’s what they’re doing, yes there’s money involved but there is also a vision here. Even Gene Roddenberry said it would be nice to see new people come in one day and retell the stories of Kirk and Spock and that’s what I see here.
So as I said this isn’t 60s Star Trek, this is the Roman’s retelling the Greek myths (or is that the other way around :P) it just has warp nacelles

I really like how it looks.
I can however get into Arkonbeys point..
I want to see Indiana Jones 4 less and less, saw a southpark episode today dedicated to the way George Lucas & Steven Spielberg supposedly ‘raped’ Indiana Jones.

With a franchise you have to show the fans and the creation respect which is not what they did in Indy 4 - they cheapened a brilliant character with stupidity and had that film not been an Indy film it would have been universally panned and flopped at the cinema.
As for the ‘raping’ part - that’s a little melodramatic and inappropriate in my mind (I hope I didn’t use the term!) - yes they crushed a childhood hero but that word shouldn’t be deminished in any way.

I thought that the use of that word wasn’t necessary either especially in the way they made the episode..but I guess southpark has no taboo’s…

Yeah there was a fair bit of controversy when that came out. The term I guess just comes from fanboys trying to find the most vile and horrible act possible to show their dismay but have just missed the mark slightly.

I’ve got no problem with the movie or the ship. I’m looking forward to them both.
Well, okay, one nitpick. The nacelles look like they were headlights stolen off someone’s 1950s (maybe ’60s) car… I could do without that.

They mentioned that in the picture the nacelles are not powered up so will look different when they’re on. So they should have similar feel to the 60s nacelles (hopefully without looking tacky).
