Pretty much the most horrible day today

November 12th, 2008

I’m so horribly exhausted and tired and angry and miserable and it’s been ages since I’ve done a personal post so I thought I would offload on you guys.

Yup you can do the bolt now if you’re just looking for pop culture references and comic book geekery, this evening I just don’t have it in me.

So the other day we finally found the house.  The house.  Great price, great location, great yard.  Great.

We put in an offer, we waited with bated breath, it was accepted.

We went and saw the bank again (this being the third meeting with them), we filled out all the paperwork, shook hands, smiled and for the first time in over twelve months the light at the end of the tunnel flickered on and for a second we let our guard down.

Today the bank changed their mind, after three incredibly positive, “yes you can do that, you have pre-approval for more than you would want” meetings they advised that even though we could easily afford the repayments we don’t meet the criteria.

Great.

The weight of over twelve months of less than ideal circumstances all came crashing down.

So emotionally drained we’ve had to go and come up with a Plan B, and it looks promising, but I can’t believe anymore that it’s going to happen and that has pretty much killed me inside.

So if it is a little quiet around here in the next couple of weeks that’s why (who am I kidding - I’ll be here).

I know I said no comic book stuff but I’ve got to reward you somehow - I really love the symmetry between Iron Man’s first appearance and the story of his last:

Lee, don’t give up - I know you both will achieve your dream of home ownership. I think this is more a reflection on the economy than it is a reflection on you or your wife. I know you can do it!

Oh it’s not really anything to with us as we are able to service the loan, it’s about being led down a path when we could have been seeking out better arrangements and putting ourselves into a better situation.

Having been through a similar experience ourselves about a month ago, you have my sympathies Lee. I hope your back-up plan comes to fruition.

I’ve never in my life been as stressed as I was when selling and buying our house.

    Hang in there.

I didn’t know Ironman was hanging up his boots. I assuming he’ll be back at some point.

Cheers Dan - we’re hanging as best we can right now :)

It’s kind of a ‘what if’ story I guess - it’s a one shot special featuring him hanging up the jet boots.

That sucks, man. Having the rug pulled out from under you like that is just wrong. I hope Plan B works out better than Plan 9.

We have a first home owners grant that is fantastic but the problem has been in the bank not advising of one small condition that cancels us out. Had they advised that earlier then we would have gone to another lender straight away.
It came down to them giving us the wrong info and promising stuff they couldn’t deliver.

Keep your chin up. We started looking for a house on 7 July, 2006. Hooked up with a great buyer’s agent and hit the trail. In our price range, all of the houses were basically ready to be condemned. Truly. One had a cracked slab and would have needed $50,000 of repairs just to pass inspection.

However, through great work by our agent and mortgage person, we moved into our new home on 27 Sept, 2006.

Don’t settle and don’t give up hope.

remember that if plan B fails..there’s always plan C-Z..sometimes these things ask you to be really stubborn. My sister has some big problems with getting a new house too..it’s a wonder there aren’t more rage-shoot outs .

@ Ironman, I like the aggressive pose of the first one! And what Dan said..does he hang up his boots?

LOL yeah we figure the universe has its reasons for throwing us another curve ball.

I actually think (re Iron Man) that I prefer the original armour over the new stuff. There’s something raw and powerful about it - classic I guess.

    I have two words.

    Banking Ombudsman.

It is not your fault this happened - it is the fault of the bank. Even if going to the banking ombudsman might not fix the problem (and just quietly it is possible that it would) it might mean someone else does not have to go through that in the future. You also might be eligible to receive financial compensation if you have incurred any expenses as a result of this mistake.

    Just a thought. :)

Once this is all done and dusted that will definitely be a path that we go down, we’ll also be pulling all our accounts with them and carefully telling everyone why :)

Bummer bummer bummer. I hate it when people tell you that you can do something and then they move the goal posts like that. I really hope that you get things sorted out soon.

Its a sign that the bank needs to spend some time and money making sure that their staff are trained and have some decent product knowledge. They are playing games with people when it comes to this sort of thing.

That’s exactly the problem! If we don’t fit the criteria I completely hear that, it’s a lot of money and you have to protect your risk (although this condition seems to be a little stupid). But to lead us on when we could have just gone elsewhere??

They’ve basically taken any joy out of this process :)

Dude, the same thing happened to us. Preapproval for like 50 grand more than we wanted, but when we went in to do the deed they changed their mind.

Lucky for us our conveyancer was freaking AWESOME and found another bank who were all ‘WTF? Of course! You want more money?’

Hope the same happens for you. I totally know how you are feeling right now. Disappointment doesn’t even scratch the surface of the feeling.

Kelleys last blog post..Dammit. I knew there was something missing from Boo’s party. And keeping with the tradition of freakishly long blog post titles, something about Christmas too.
