Last Daughter of Krypton

October 30th, 2008

I know I said that Batman was next on the agenda, he’s not an easy character to approach simply thanks to his iconic status and that like fingerprints no two artist’s impressions of the Batman are the same.  I don’t know if I’ve decided what I want my version of him to look like quite yet.

But I had to draw a DC character, and I’ve been promising to draw Supergirl for a while now.  I had no idea how she would go using the markers as they aren’t exactly fine tipped - well not the way I use them anyhow.

See the larger version here.

I’ve been digging on your close-up portraits. I think the next step is to reproduce them large-scale (or large-ish) in acrylics (easier) or oils (harder, but more luminosity). Like Lichtenstein, only not pretentious and post-modern.

I say this because the marker colors look vivid, but the inevitable overlap of strokes isn’t bad for a sketch, but is a bit distracting for something that should be a finished work.

My college roommate was a big DC fan (Captain Marvel, mostly). For his senior project he painted a massive (5-foot-tall) torso portrait of Superman in oil on canvas. The painting was surrounded by a hand-made oak frame and at each corner and centered on each frame side, were six-inch reproductions of Superman comic panels. It took him an entire semester and wish I had some images of it.

Of course, your only problem is that the characters are so ‘young’ that you couldn’t sell the works without the Mighty Marvel Barristers on you case.

    LOL mind reader.

I have several giant canvas (what’s the plural here??) sitting in storage awaiting us buying a house.

I will most certainly be transferring a couple of these over to that medium as was my intention originally (markers are easier when you’re in some one else’s house).

I will probably look at painting generic non-trademarked super heroes though - I’m interested in capturing snapshots of them not so much in your giant hero poses.

I will probably do one off ‘comission’ pieces though ;) and who knows maybe I can turn it around into fine art and they’ll leave me alone.

I love how she is sort of smiling. The I’m out here enjoying the wind in my hair and the sun of my face kind of happy look.
