What I’m watching: Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honneamise

October 27th, 2008

So I’ve been trying to catch up a little on my anime whilst my internet is at 1990’s speed (thanks to my provider’s cap that we managed for the third month in the row to go over).  So a trip to the video store was in order.  My local Blockbuster has recently halved their store and appear to have removed a huge chunk of their anime so my selection wasn’t that great.

I also don’t keep up in the anime titles so a lot of the time I’m judging by the cover and the brief descriptions on the back as was the case with Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honneamise.

The plot sounded pretty good in that a slacker is drafted into the laughable Royal Space Force that is seen to be a joke by everyone else but then it becomes the focus of the planet and he suddenly becomes world famous.

It probably has a better description but all I saw was space force, dude in a space suit and a space ship.  Cool.

Well it was interesting, it’s considered to be quite the impressive film but I don’t know if it was my cup of tea.  The art is fantastic, as with pretty much most of the anime I’ve seen the attention to detail is superb.  It felt like a long film though where not a huge amount happened.  I guess it’s more cerebral and spiritual than I’m used to in my anime, maybe the anime equivalent to 2001: A Space Odyssey?  Although I think that might be giving it a little too much credit, the end sequence is certainly reminiscent of the scifi classic.

The soundtrack reminded me of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time, which isn’t a bad thing, I have that on my iPod and do listen it.  But I did find certain sections to be distracting, the music would rise up and I would look for a chicken to chase (ahhhh Zelda, good memories).

So I don’t know if I am going to recommend this, some may find it a wonderful spiritual journey and others may be bored (I possibly fall into the latter).

If you’ve seen it I’d be interested in hearing your thoughts.
