5 reasons why Jurassic Park is still awesome

October 9th, 2008

  1. Dinosaurs - OK, yes it is obvious.  The film has dinosaurs, obviously… but the film HAS dinosaurs!!!!  They looked real, I remember being in awe of that scene where we get to see the Brachiosaurus for the first time.  Don’t tell me you weren’t impressed with the dinosaurs, if you weren’t you’re a miserable asshole who probably shouldn’t go to the movies.
  2. Fantastic production design - I’ve got the making of JP book which details all the production design which went into creating the world of Jurassic Park.  Right down to the ID cards there is a look and feel to InGen and Jurassic Park that is consistent and believable.
  3. Location, location, location - the scenery alone is worth the price of the ticket - the scene when they fly up to the island is breathtaking, the plains where they escape the stampede, it all looks fantastic and helps the story, sometimes it’s nice to look at pretty things :)
  4. Chaos theory is brilliant - I love chaos theory, what I can wrap my head around and of course this film helped raise the branch of mathematics’s profile.  I also enjoy the science stuff and how they explained it very simply (maybe a little too simply but hey we needed to get to the screaming and the running)
  5. They’ve got a T-Rex - sweet god they have a T-Rex and it looks awesome, truly awesome.

T-Rex? Ba! The Raptors made it for me. Much more scary.

I thought about the Raptors, I include them in reason #1 - the T-Rex is on a whole other level of dino joy :) (scientifically speaking of course)

You forgot the music. That is one of John Williams’ winners. (Not that most of his stuff isn’t excellent, but it’s also catchy.)

Oh that music is good though isn’t it, the theme is instantly recognisable. I think I could possibly bring this up to a list of ten very easily.

I like that the science isn’t *completely* outdated yet! Ok, so you would be very arrogant to try to clone and control dinosaurs, and “filling in the gaps” with frog DNA is a bit silly, and the changing of sex because of the frog DNA is lame. However, scientists are still talking about trying to clone the extinct species (e.g. Tasmanian Tiger) from recovered DNA.

I read the book The Science of Jurassic Park and it was really interesting and the original novel was very well researched, but then all of Crichton’s novels are like that.

In fact two of his researchers worked on the Iron Man film.

this movie was beyond awesome when I saw it in the cinema. It still is the reason I don’t sit next to my mum when we watch movies that’ll make you jump..she tends to squeeze the life out of anyone sitting next to her..just because she jumped at a scary moment haha.
We (me and my brother) still have a lot of the toys (incl 2! batteried t-rexes).
I own the 1st & 2nd movie on videotape, but I heard they were offering 1-3 on dvd for not too much money..I’ll buy it.

I’m going to blabber on.. this movie actually gave a whole new meaning to the Dutch sentence (*translated here of course*) ‘(you’re)ripped from the potty’ which meant as much as ‘you’re insane’.. after the movie people just used it to refer to JP. Even now when somebody uses the expression the T-rex pops up in my head ripping the guy from the toilet.
Next time I’m at my parents house..I’m going to take pics of all the toys and make a post about it.
Thanks for firing up my day..*got up áfter noon*

A little dino firing up is good for the blood :)
I’ve got a few of the dinosaur figures too, although I bought them much later. Can’t wait to see those pics!

It is such a well rounded film. I also love the scene when the car drops after them in the tree - wonderful fun!

It was silly, scientifically wonky and, somehow, less cinematic than the book. However, it DOES still rock. The effects were pretty advanced, but hold up really quite well.

But, as you said, the main reason for its staying power is DINOSAURS!

I’ve got book 1 & 2 (is there a 3rd?…) and the main thing is that different people die or stay alive..which had in my eyes a strange effect (more than in other ‘translations’ of book-to-movie).

Dinosaurs..they weren’t one of the most succesfull species to have ever lived on earth for nothing.

Between Jurassic Park and The Lost World the novels Ian Malcolm comes back to life, something I don’t think anyone would have forgiven if they had done that in the films but we all just kind of accepted the fact and glossed over the line that has him die in JP.

In fairness to this Arthur C Clarke when writing the Odyssey novels had to ignore parts of earlier books simple because science had updated itself and discovered more moons, disproved theories etc He does make mention of this in his introductions.

hush..I was so careful nót to point that out haha. But yes..it was a bit strange having Malcolm back..and with a dragging speech to start off too. Crighton didn’t have a really good excuse though..

He addressed it in an interview and said that he just wanted to write more Ian Malcolm, I’m ok with that, I arguably find Lost World a better read than JP (the movies are a whole other kettle of fish)

I really like the Lost World book too. I’m not sure why they departed so much from the original storyline to make the sequels, because the book was really good. But still. Dino carnage!

I remember seeing this in the cinemas. The guy I went with said “it won’t be scary”. I think he still has scars on his arms from my fingernails. :)

The scene where the ripped up goat lands on the 4×4 roof was quite graphic for a PG film, oh and the scene where the lawyer gets eaten too I suppose. It is a hard PG I suppose.

I love Jurassic Park. The first one is awesome but the 2nd and 3rd are so-so. I still scream every time the T-rex or the raptors would pop out. I also love watching Independence Day too. These are classic movies for me. :D

I don’t mind the 3rd one, it was a reasonable film that didn’t really go anywhere away from the formula, the 2nd one if it followed the book would have been so much more interesting.
They should never had the T-Rex roaming the streets and drinking pool water (I’m pretty certain the chemicals would have put it off?).
ID4 is great, always a bit of fun.
