Swollenpickles: A comic book Q&A

October 8th, 2008

I’ve known Swollenpickles for simple ages now, it may have been before joining the Aussie Bloggers forum but I can’t be sure.  Swollenpickles and I have had a couple of good chats about comics and he also runs Comicologist where we share a lot of the same ideas when it comes to comic books.

  • Favourite regular series right Now?
Probably a tie between Immortal Iron Fist and Moon Knight, with the current X-Men series running a close second.
  • Comic book character you only recently discovered/started reading?
I guess I’m still new enough to comics that they are all relatively recent discoveries. I only recently discovered Wanted and that was awesome. I also recently discovered the Dark Phoenix saga (not that is new, but it was new to me).
  • If you could draw/write one character who would it be?
Besides Deadpool, it would have to be Moon Knight. He’s a super hero onion. Layers… plus he can make a grown man cry, I’m told it’s one of his powers.
Actually, I can’t limit it to one, so I have to say I’d like to take a crack at Wolverine Origins, if nothing else, just to pick up the pace a bit. Two things bug me about that book. The pacing seems unnecessarily drawn out and Dillion seems to have a Sylvester Stallone fascination. Take a look at any male face he’s drawn and see if it doesn’t look like Sylvester Stallone to you!
  • Are you a fan of the big multi issue crossover extravaganzas?
Only when it’s done well. I think Messiah Complex was really well put together. Civil War was good also, but all the spinoffs became a bit much.
World War Hulk was kind of disappointing, especially after how brilliant Planet Hulk as.
  • Last comic book series that you dropped and why?
I’m not going to worry about the next Hulk series. Planet Hulk was awesome,
but then along came World War Hulk and they lost me. Some of the World War Hulk tie ins were absolutely terrible as well. The WWH X-Men four issue thing was unforgiveable.
  • Favourite character?
Deadpool, Gambit or Moon Knight. Gambit has been a favorite for as long as I can remember, Deadpool and Moon Knight I’ve only started appreciating later in life.
  • Are you a DC or a Marvel?
Marvel for sure. Besides Batman, I can’t think of a major DC series that I’m
    in to.
  • Do you remember your first comic/series?
Late bloomer, but it was Cable & Deadpool. Actually only got into reading
comics because of the Marvel Ultimate Alliance. What sort of geek am I? I bought Cable & Deadpool Vol.1 and Batman Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth at the same time. I tore through Cable & Deadpool and promptly order the other trades that were out at the time.
  • Is Watchmen the movie going to be as good as the comic book?
I saw the preview at IMAX and it looks like it just might.
  • Favourite comic book movie?
    The Dark Knight.
  • Worst comic book movie?
    Ghost Rider. Terrible.
  • Character you’d like to see in a movie?
Deadpool, Gambit or Moon Knight… see a trend here? I think Immortal Iron
Fist would make an excellent movie as well.
  • Series that you’d like to see on TV?
I’m not sure. It would have to be something more character driven I think for it to work. Actually, I’d like to see the Walking Dead series adapted for TV or a movie. It’s got that epic serial feel, plus it has zombies so everyone wins!

I only just got into Iron Fist myself but I don’t think I’ve ever read Moon Knight at all (white hood and cape right?).

I’m a lot like you in that I like to normally wait for a series to come out in trade paperback first and read it all in one hit.

Everyone always hates on Ghost Rider… sheesh.

Pacing is becoming a big issue for me in some of these titles, Batman was like that for me, I’d read it and then realise that nothing really happened in the last pages (actually Trinity was like that for me).

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly too!

Anyone who reads the site and wants to be featured here just send me an email from the contact page, I haven’t just blanket contacted everyone because I don’t think you all read comics :)

about Dillion’s faces…Stallone looks like his face was hit by molten wax.. Maybe Dillion had the same thing with his face-drawing hehe

I’m actually reading Bullseye: Greatest Hits right now. Another Daniel Way and Steve Dillon book. The Sly Stallone thing is really off putting for me.

Pick up the Charles Huston and David Finch version of Moon Knight. I was blown away by the art and the story is quite brutal for a comic. Not kids stuff.

Leave poor GR alone! I thought they did quite a good job to try and sell him to the masses.

And no, I’m not biased at all :-p

I don’t get the GR bashing myself, it’s a dude with a flaming skull on a motorbike :)
The film doesn’t offend me on the level that some films such LXG do.

That’s true. I’ve posted some of the screen caps from the Wolverine trailer here:

    Gambit is two pics down.

GAHHH! Bone claws! Bone flippin’ claws! Oh, that was the worst marvel idea. Actually doing a Wolverine origin was the worse, but the bone claws was just salt in the wound.

Geek that I am, I will now officially pass on the film when it comes out, just for that reason.

I always think that the bone claws look really great in the books, I don’t agree with them and personally I just imagine them to be the metal ones that we all love but they do have an interesting look.

I guess in the movie they are suggesting that he always had claws and that they have just plated them like the rest of his body later on. Some of this film takes place prior obviously so maybe metal claws will still feature highly.

In the comics Wolverine has always had the bone claws apparently. Just prior to the Onslaught saga Magneto stripped the adamantium from his bones and he still had the claws happening. Also in the Wolverine Origin comic young Wolverine is shown with the claws also. The childhood scenes from the preview look consistent with the Origin comic (the mini and not the series).

I had an idea that this was the case, it makes sense to me and as I say in the comics at least the bone claws look great.

Are they rebooting the Wolverine story and seperating from the X-Men series of movies? I heard that Cyclops might appear??

It doesn’t seem to be a reboot, but more like a prequel to what happened to wolverine before the first x-men movie.
I read that cyclops may appear in a scene but not as a major character. More like wolverine passing a young cyclops in the street or something.

I can wear that then, I wish they had done that with Han Solo in the Star Wars prequel, just have him in the background in his signature vest. No more than that though, don’t even pause the camera on him.
