What I’m watching: part two because I forgot two shows
September 25th, 2008
I can’t believe I forgot two shows last night when I was writing about what I’m watching. Arjan reminded me when he mentioned Heroes, so here is the follow up…
Heroes
OMG I love Heroes. Forget that the second season was a dog, that had a bearded Jack Bauer show up I wouldn’t have been surprised*. They admitted their mistakes, promised to fix them and I’m gullible hopeful enough that they may just make a worthy follow up to Season One (one of the greatest seasons of a show ever). And the first two episodes really haven’t failed me so far, I’m still cautious but I’m quite excited to see new powers, old powers, villains and Sylar. Tracey hates Sylar, in a ‘I’m bored’ kind of way rather than he is pure evil. Have to see cousin Larry on this one because all you bastards keep putting spoilers out there.
Robotech
A while back I indulged my inner child (lol that’s funny…) and picked up some animation boxsets that were cheap, Star Blazers (my Mum and I loved this show), Battle of the Planets and Robotech. I’ve put Season One on in the background whilst I’ve been doing stuff and have constantly found myself being sucked into the adventures of Rick Hunter. I have very vivid memories of my Mum referring to Rick as a dirty stop out because of the love triangle he finds himself in (we preferred Lisa).
But I can totally see how this could be made into a movie, it has action, pathos, a great cast of characters and surprising humour. Obviously the show itself doesn’t hold up as well as it could, it was hacked together for American markets and I wonder how much storyline remained intact. When you watch them one after another you notice that a quarter of the show is dedicated to recapping the previous episode.
There are clearly some great concepts and ideas in there.
I’m sure there are other shows that I’m currently watching but have forgotten.
*Off hand remark referring to my general apathy towards Season Six of 24 and how I feel that they made a perfectly good must see TV show into a god I hope next season is better than this one TV show.

Heroes…. I had a mixed reaction to that on Monday. It didn’t grab me like I wanted it to. I have to say I’m a little bored with Sylar. I’m glad he’s taking a back seat for at least part of this season. The Peter thing was interesting, but what’s this power of putting someone inside someone else? That’s the first power they’ve had on this show that I was totally not buying. It just feels wrong.

I can wear that power, I’m certain I seen that somewhere else in comic book land. I was good enough for Freaky Friday
Actually I guess it doesn’t stretch my imagination or disbelief any further than Spock’s katra in Star Trek 2 and 3.

Oh, yeah, I’m not saying it’s a power I’ve never seen before… it’s just that it didn’t seem to fit in that world. YMMV.

Well, there’s my first Heroes spoiler :-p
I better go see Cousin Larry ’cause I don’t wanna be left behind either.
I loved shows like Robotech, Star Blazers and Battles of the Planets (but not the 90’s version that they renames Eagle Riders, yuck), but I don’t want to watch them again now for fear of ruining my childhood memories.
A friend of mine brought season 1 and 2 of Voltron over last year (The lion one, not the vehicle one). I eagerly started watching but stopped after the third episode I thought they were way too crap to continue with. I was very disappointed with mysolf for feeling this way as I absolutely loved Voltron as a child and nagged my parents into buying as many of the toys as I could: I’ve still got Voltron, the action figures of all 5 main characters and the Castle of Lions stored away at my parents place.
I wonder if I can find old episodes of He-Man or Silverhawks anywhere: I wasn’t as attached to those and wouldn’t mind having another look.

Shouldn’t ruin anything really. I had the end of episode 2 ruined for me.
I know what you mean about going back and watching shows that had a special place in your childhood only to discover that they really are quite crap now
The A-Team is like that for me, I managed to catch an episode a while back and they turned a hot water system into a bazooka and a lot of guys leapt around. It was just weak.
Robotech’s main storyline is holding up, there was some talk amongst Rick’s team about a threesome that was awkward
I doubt He-Man holds up at all and I never really watched Silverhawks. After Robotech I’m going to cross my fingers and watch Transformers, see how that goes.

Just watching SGA ep 10 and they appear to have added Iron Man to the cast
I’m giving Merlin a go. Dodgy show by the BBC, apparently a mix of Dr Who and Smallville set in King Arthurs Camelot. Should be interesting, I survived the recent Robin Hood, sure I can survive Merlin.

Season 5, ep 10. “First Contact”.
Does appear to be an Iron Man like character.
Merlin was interesting, more medicore than so terribly bad it was fun. However my girls loved it. Internet snarks are hating on it because it is not factually accurate, ummmm…. its based on the legend of Merlin and Arthur, how can there be factual accuracy?

I thought it was cool that another actor (Francis Capra - Eli/Weevil) which was featured in Veronica Mars (next to Elle - Kirsten Belle) showed up
I agree with that season 1 was a great first season, except for the ending..I’ve got to act like a sheep and say that sucked a bit.

I didn’t mind the ending. Season two was weak but still better than a lot of the rubbish out there, but they didn’t make the most of it unfortunately.

Heroes was a fantastic disappointment to me. I was rather looking forward to it when it first came out (I’m always willing to watch a TV show that appears to have a beginning, middle, and end). It was a pretty decent idea, but poorly executed. It took months to introduce the characters and their interactions and that should have taken weeks. It felt sluggish and chock full of padding; the writers and director were substituting slowness for suspense and convolution for complexity. In the end I was very, very bored with it. I did catch a bit of Villains, but it was more of the same to me. (man. I am such a nerd to have such strong feelings about this, eh?)
That said, Starblazers is still a good show. I think it is the only animated TV show from my youth that can still hold up. Probably because it wasn’t really for kids (American bowlderizing notwithstanding). I still remember the funeral scene from the Battle of the Rainbow Galaxy; even as a kid that hit me.
