A microwave should never go near scrambled eggs
September 21st, 2008
On the weekend Tracey and I love going out for breakfast, the cooking facilities where we currently live leave a lot to be desired and so we are limited. Â Neither of us can stomach toast as I’m pretty certain our systems don’t handle bread very well (I’m supposed to avoid generally anyway thanks to the high GI of the stuff).
So we go out in search of the perfect actually make that an ‘adequate‘ place to eat. Â Unfortunately more often than not we find ourselves at shopping centres and eating in cafes that have no business calling themselves cafes.
I expect that if you are going to serve breakfast food in any way, shape or form then your ‘kitchen’Â requires a hotplate. Â End of fucking story. Â People want stuff that has been cooked on a hotplate. Â Eggs should be cooked on a hotplate, fried or scrambled. Â Mushrooms should be fried on a hotplate, not dipped in hot oil the night before and heated up in the oven.
But the ultimate betrayal, the worst offence in my mind is to get an egg mixture, put it in a plastic dish, place that dish into a microwave, use the microwave to cook the egg mixture and then mix it up with a knife so that it resembles scrambled eggs.
The texture for one is not correct, there are little air bubbles throughout that give it an awfully undesirable appearance. Â The second thing is the taste is bland, really bland. Â Now the ‘cafe‘ that we went to could argue and say people like the eggs that way, I mean people have different tastes etc. Â The five plates of scrambled eggs that I saw get left almost untouched during an hour period should be a hint to the ‘chef‘ that something isn’t working.
Then whilst you’re at it if you have thin toast with margarine placed underneath microwaved abominations they will become very quickly soggy and inedible.
Coffee Club Carindale I’m looking directly at you.
If you cannot possibly spare the extra metre or so for a hotplate and you don’t hire actual cooks then you should just serve coffee and cake, don’t try and be something you ain’t.

I would complain about something like this now, I’m so sick of bad food and bad service!
(sigh) how I miss Nest in Potts Point, the best poached eggs in the freakin’ universe.

It’s unfortunately just the way they do it, apparently this has somehow become acceptable in Brisbane.

High Gl? -> gluten?
I just live on bread for breakfast and lunch.
It’s a sad thing when you can’t get a decent breakfast outdoors..and have to pay for it too! I don’t know if your Ikea has this, but ours has a breakfast for only 1€ that’s quite good: a croisant, a small baguette, butter & jam and cheese, a boiled egg and a cup of coffee/tea.

Glycemic Index because of the whole diabetic thing - higher GI more it affects your blood sugar.

Ikea do a good breakfast here in Melbourne that is pretty cheap but I seem to end up purchasing half the store on my way through as well. So it ends up being not so cheap.
I very rarely use the microwave for anything at all and then just defrosting. It had never occurred to me that you could even cook eggs in there. I was horrified when a friend suggested cooking my bacon in the microwave but went ahead and did it, they just were not the same. Think I will skip testing out scrambled eggs in there.
If I want dodgy scrambled eggs I will get breakfast from McDonalds or Hungry Jacks. At least they have hash browns to ease the pain.

This is my thought exactly, McDonalds does a breakfast which is on par if not better than a lot of these cafes. For generally a lot less of the price and definitely in half the time.
I highly recommend to avoid testing the microwaved scrambled eggs

It sounds to me like you’re having one bad food experience after abother on the south side of the Brisbane river. You know what you need to do

Yeah I know, Chermside shopping centre has generally been good to us food court wise.

Man. Any eating establishment that uses a microwave for other than defrosting is an affront. Maybe even then.
We go to breakfast a very (tiny) bakery/breakfast down the street. If you crane your neck, you can see inside the kitchen. Plus, microwaved breakfast foods do not smell as heavenly as fried.

Service standards can be really slack here in Brisbane, we went to a nice little eatery in the city and it was great the first time, horrible the second because of bad service and not know what soft scrambled eggs mean.

ICK !!!!
We don’t have a microwave.
I don’t like scrambled eggs at the best of times. You have put me off even more.
Hope you and Tracey find a cafe that serves decent food.

Way to make me feel like a lousy cook! lol. I’ll eat anything and quite often do microwave scrambled eggs for myself. I wouldn’t pay for it though.
That air bubble texture thing is because they have overcooked it. I like to think I have the microwave scramble down to a fine art. Perhaps I could on it. LOL.

I’m not a big fan of scrambled eggs at the best of time… but I concede I am always fascinated by what Subway manages to do with an egg and a microwave. I really like the results, although I’ve never been able to reproduce them myself.

Hey - back off the ‘microwave srambled egg’ thing
Its dead easy, and one of my fave breakfast meals now.
You just have to add a little butter and milk before ‘nuking’ it - then take it out every 30 seconds or so and give it a good stir, (don’t forget, always stop cooking before it looks done, as it cooks a little after removing it).
I realise that this effort might seem like it defeats the object, but it works for me and the cleanup is far easier too.
