What I’m playing: World in Conflict
September 9th, 2008
Red Dawn was an awesome movie, what if America had been invaded by comunist forces at the height of the cold war? Soviet tanks rolling through US towns out the front of capitalist icons such as Burger King and McDonalds. US citizens having to form resistence cells.
All cool to imagine, probably not much fun for people in countries that are actually being invaded etc but the idea of a pre-9/11 America was so fanciful that the idea of an invasion was almost science fiction in itself.
Which brings me to the game World in Conflict which is a real time strategy game set in the fictional 80s when Soviet Russia launches an invasion on US soil (Seattle to be specific but you also get to fight in New York - I lost the Statue of Liberty several times).
This is a little different to the RTS games I usually play, Age of Empires and Empire Earth amongst my favourites. You don’t build up resources for instance, you have reinforcement points that you can use to replace lost troops and vehicles. You can also call in ranged atillery attacks and napalm drops.
Each of your troops have different abilities and purposes and you generally have to master each of these to achieve your goals. Which I might add isn’t that difficult if you do the basic training (something I tend to avoid) and start off slowly (i.e easy), I would have liked it though if I could have paused the game to reassign my troops in their often multiple objectives but like the designers suggested it probably would have interrupted the flow of the game.
There is a pretty decent storyline too as you follow several characters through the various campaigns, I actually watched most of these and listened to the Alec Baldwin voice over (trying not to picture Jack from 30 Rock).
The only other thing I would have loved is if they had a skirmish section that just lets me go out and blow shit up.
Pretty happy to because this is soooo value for money - $8 from K-Mart down from $79.
Dude, smart shopper.

$8 is a hard price to beat, that’s for sure.
I haven’t played spent any serious game time ever since I went cold turkey to beat my WOW addiction 18 months ago.
Maybe I can spent some game time on my next holiday in January. Maybe.

I’ll have to check if it’s as cheap overhere, I’ve read more good things about this one. But I still need to finish Supreme Commander..and I will. Oh and if anyone finds me Max Payne 2…I’ll get addicted to that again too.

I really wanted to play that. It just looked so cool and wonderfully silly. But a) I’m a Mac guy and have a Pentium 3 Dell laptop that I only use for playing Civ 3 and b) I really hate RTS and prefer TBS.
Dang. Now that reminded me of how much I miss X-Com
