90210 dropped by Channel Ten
October 7th, 2008
Apparently Channel Ten was unhappy by 90210 2.0’s performance after three episodes and have decided to drop the show (very quickly) from its lineup. Apparently they feel that getting only 616,000 viewers is such a horrible black hole of ratings that it must banish the show from the channel immediately or the numbers will start to drag everyone else down.
They replaced it with one of the Bourne movies (I mean at least it got bumped for something good rather than the five or so movies that they’ve been replaying over and over), I can only assume that they’ll replace it with Law and Order…something or other. Surely we’ve gotten to the stage now that we can have an all Law and Order station that shows nothing but Law and Order 24/7?
You see I’m not going to defend the show’s quality or its acting or the scary stick figure girls in it, but surely a show that pulls in maybe half a million viewers is better than just showing repeats? Which is something Channel Ten does when a show isn’t a huge success straight off the bat.
They did the same thing with Torchwood (Torchwood did get to ride out its first season at midnight after achieving I guess bad prime time ratings), but there is no mention of Torchwood season 2 even though Ten already bought the show. Maybe Torchwood season two made it over to High Definition because I know they have a scifi night but I don’t have HD.
I just don’t like how shows in Australia aren’t given a chance to grow an audience and if they aren’t mega ratings hits they are replaced by repeats or pushed into worse timeslots. Science Fiction especially suffers from this.
They wonder why people downloading shows is such a problem.

I didn’t start 90210 and never saw Torchwood, but the story is the same for so many series. Larry’s got Torchwood season 2 (just had a quick look) upto ep 13 or so.
But there are series who got far more viewers which got dropped because of ‘low viewer rate’ *cough Jericho*. Especially overhere where most shows maybe get imported 1 or more years after it’s release in the US, networks seem to underestimate the size of the download community. I suggest they put something good on tv on the early saturday night..for a change. That, I”ll be able to follow if it stays there. And they should communicate it better otherwise I might run into a good serie half-way of a season..which makes me come knocking at Larry’s door again.

We have the exact same problems here in Australia, although as I’ve mentioned in the past the whole fast tracked from the US thing is starting to pick up (although being three weeks behind Heroes is not really fast tracking THAT quickly).

Well, I agree with your point that the networks should give shows a chance to ‘grow’ an audience. We’ve seen that time and time again. BUT, I’ll admit to being happy that there’ll be no 90210 on our screens! Couldn’t stand it last time, don’t want it back again! I’d settle for a good sci-fi series, or even something new, original and Aussie…

Scifi on Australian TV is treated so poorly it is offensive. I remember when DS9 premiered at prime time and then after its first double length first episode it was pushed back to midnight up against the Original Series?!?
Farscape was produced here and we treated it with no respect, the series was only shown over the christmas break at 11:30 at night (granted it was everynight) but it was a channel 9 produced series!?!

You’ll be happy to know that Ten HD is currently showing Torchwood Series 2. We just happened to stumble across it and were pleasantly surprised. Much better than Battlestar :-p

Torchwood season 2 was surprisingly strong actually, the first season seemed pretty standard to me, better than a lot of shows but a little more Stargate Atlantis’ish (looks good and is predictably consistent).
The rumours I hear about season three aren’t good. Battlestar and I have a weird relationship, sometimes I think it’s the best show on TV and other days I’m flicking through the episode just to get to the end.

I used to watch Law & Order but I’m so over it now (I get my “crime” fix through Bones and Criminal Minds which have great character development and aren’t stale). I can also point the finger at Channel 9 and the endless stream of CSI, blerk.
I think television has ruined so many great shows, (Arrested Development cough cough) by banishing them to late night time slots and you’re right - they are worried about people downloading tv? I love being able to download a show, convert it and burn it, watch it on my tv and someone has removed the ads FOR ME! I think sadly, television networks are even further behind the eight ball than the music industry, and that’s saying something!

I missed Arrested Development completely on television for probably these reasons which eventually worked out because I got to watch it on DVD in its entirety. Still I would have liked to have seen it earlier.
Something else that I’ll complain about Ten is The Simpsons, I love the Simpsons but I hate how channel ten will advertise new Simpsons one week and then run a rerun the following week, it is completely random.
