Top Gun 2

August 27th, 2008

I dunno, you can say what you want about Tom Cruise but truth be told I can still enjoy Top Gun.   When they were first attempting to sell surround sound systems, DVD players and big screen TVs all they would do is pop in the newly released with no special features and probably a cardboard cover Top Gun DVD into the player and you could see the men being drawn over to that corner.

Hey, I admit I was one of those guys who saw in the corner of my eye a fighter jet do a barrel roll, realise that they were showing Top Gun and abandon my wife to the blank VHS tape aisle.

So now they’re saying that they are in talks to drum up a Top Gun 2 with Cruise as one of the instructors.   Done right this could be most triumphant and very welcomed, done poorly and it could be Starship Troopers 3: I want to like it but it makes it too damn hard to.

I’m willing to forget the kookiness of Cruise for a decent Top Gun sequel, they have to bring back Iceman though and at least it’s not a remake, I am so sick of remakes!!!

I love that the Germans are so anti Scientology that there is lots of upset about Cruise portraying Nazi officer Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg in his new film Valkyrie.

I’m not a big Tom Cruise fan, mostly because I prefer to see good looking guys in the lead - preferably mostly naked - not so interested in small, hairy rodents.

I never really had a problem with his affiliation with Scientology but then he started putting his private life including Scientology into our faces and he creeps me out with it.

I’m happy to separate an actor with his private life and a performance on the screen, but he’s also been in some dog films of late.

Hmm… I admit to being one of those guys. I still get drawn to the big screen and sound demos by stuff like that. My wife turns around for a second and then looks back to find I’ve wandered off. I’ve even been slapped for standing there with my 3 year old watching a dinosaur eat a lawyer, or while some guy gets blown away in some scary way.

Top Gun 2 COULD be good… but Cruise won’t let it. See… it can’t be good and be about him.

if they were going to make a remake of TG1…it would be a criminal offense!
Don’t know..about #2…I don’t think I’ll spend money on it in the cinema..

That’s what I mean I’d rather them make a sequel than a remake any day!

The funny thing is that the fighter program is sort of scaling back as there are few, if any, air-to-air threats these days. So, TG2 would be sort of sad.

Oh that’s easy to work around, it’s not like Top Gun was a documentary. They make some reference about having to kick start the program again thanks to some foreign power ramping up their own air force. Actually having to do that might even be the driving force behind the story.
No a Top Gun 2 story would be easy.

The only role Tom Cruise has played successfully was as Charlie Babbit in Rainman - an arrogant, insufferable, egotistical smart arse.
    Because he was playing himself.
Sorry, I’m with Marita on the small, hairy rodent lol ;)

LOL obviously I’m a little more forgiving to Mr Cruise then, actually my favourite Cruise role is Jerry Maguire. I completely forget that it’s him up there.

Yeah, I wouldn’t pay money to see Top Gun 2, and not because of Tom. I just think there are some movies that should not have sequels.

I can remember being at a ‘Jason’ movie, number 5 I think, and he died and as the credits rolled, people were yelling, see you next week for Number 6.

LOTR and Star Wars began with a story covering more than one movie.

I think when a movie is successful, and they want to repeat the formula/earn more money, they have to be careful.

Could you imagine Snakes on Planes 2 ??? lol.
