Could I borrow one of your DVDs?
August 25th, 2008
Ummm well no actually.
I’m weird about it, I don’t even really like my DVDs in other people’s DVD players.
Anyone else feel funny about lending their DVDs, CDs etc out?

I used to feel iffy about lending them out and would do so despite feeling not good about the whole thing.
No I can’t do it, no matter how much I trust the person!
Name and address that’s really interesting though.

DVDs not so much, I think because the belong more to hubby than myself. Also depends greatly on which DVDs we are referring to. My Buffy collection does not leave the house unless it is visiting my good friend S in exchange for her Stargate collection.
Books on the other hand - not over my dead body.

I have lost some really good books to people which is probably what set me down this path.
In fact nothing grates my nerves more than getting a paperback novel back with creases all along the spine. I’m very particular about my stuff.

Yep - I lend them out left right and centre because I borrow them in the same way! I’ve got quite a collection now. Bought another 7 on Saturday alone!
But I do try and keep track of them all with a big list. Except I have noticed my copies of The Office (UK version thank you) isn’t where I thought it should be..

Seven - sounds like a slow day
I tried to catalogue the DVDs at one stage for insurance purposes but we got up to an embarrassing number and estimated the rest. I tried again when we had to put most of it in storage but I got bored pretty quickly with doing it.
The biggest problem we’ve got now with a lot of them in storage is I forget which entries in which franchises that I haven’t got.

I feel funny about lending books and movies to people. I lent The Office Season 1 to a friend, and it took over a year to get back. Hubby doesn’t like to lend them out either. Very, very, very rarely do they leave the house. He gets asked a lot because of the amount of DVD’s he has.
I have also lost many, many books lending them out. I no longer lend them out to anyone, unless I don’t care about getting them back.

I worry about the care levels that others may have with their DVDs.
I also think it has something to do with being a compulsive DVD collector, someone wanted to borrow my X-Files series and I just don’t like the idea of them being away from even though I’m not watching them, they are a security blanket because I may want to watch something
So don’t feel bad next time someone asks and you say no!

I’ve lost some things lending them to the ‘wrong’ person (alas, VHS copies of Thor Wixom’s “Down” and a “My Neighbor Tororo” I’ll never see again.). I have also been the wrong person once (I still feel bad, but due to a long story, I can’t return it).
My friend AndreZero and I lend DVDs, comics and books back and forth all the time. I think I’ve got more of his right now. My wife and I look at it as an excuse to cause visits. If we’ve got a lot of a friend’s books or they’ve got lots of ours, it’s a good excuse to invite them over for dinner and drinks, or stop by to say hi.
We also bought one of these at our local (independent) bookshop: http://tinyurl.com/6rnnal
But Amer’s right. Never lend out what you can’t live without.

That is such a cool pack the personal library kit - it’s going on my xmas list for someone, I don’t know who because I don’t know anyone who readily lends books or DVDs but it’s too good an idea to pass up!

yeah, depends what it is……. if there is an emotional investment or not too.
And books - no freaking way. I’ve gotten books back all dog earred and bent spines and ARGH!! How dare they mistreat my babies!! Hubby goes nuts if his dvd’s get scratched (like him and the kids don’t abuse them enough heh) so, yeah, we’re all weird.

I’m in on the bent spine club. I hate that. I even get on my wife about that. I’ll lend most CDs and DVDs though. But come to think of it, my Star Wars III DVD has been lent out for over two years now…. I actually rented it a while back just to watch it again.

I don’t if I hate anything more to be honest, creased spines show disrespect for the book and its owner.

Yes, No one can borrow anything of mine.
I let someone borrow my House Of Pain CD in Middle School and he broke the middle. I have no idea how he did it, but it was gone. So since that day no one gets to borrow any of my media.

I think it’s these childhood losses that make us wary. A girl in high school moved away with my Friday the 13th Part 3D novel (the 3D aspect wasn’t half as entertaining in the literary version).
Since then there’s been pain.

I only lend them out to people I know well enough to get them back and I’ve put everything I’ve lent on a list (also the stuff that I’ve leant from others).
Books..depends. Lending study books is no problem others only get lent to very good friends and family. Everything get’s on the list.
Cd’s….I’ll just make a copy for them..no way that I just let m borrow. Scratch it..and I’ll kill em *whistles*

That is the path I often go down especially when I’ve been raving to someone about it for ages is just copy the thing. I’ve got a lot better ripping software than I used to so this is a little easier than it once was.
Did you finish your paper on time?

Yep, had 1 too many DVD’s/CD’s not returned.
Now the only person we lend them to is eldest daughter Feral Queen coz she knows we’ll expect her to use her hard earned to replace any she loses or scratches. And she likes her money too much lol

Uh oh, I’m a spine bender, I like my books to stay flat open so I can read while I’m eating or otherwise using my hands. I only do it to books that I own. Borrowed books get more respect, unless they’re already “broken” by the time I get them. CD’s and DVD’s are lent to and from several family members because I know we’re all careful with them. Non family members get asked to supply a blank and we make them a copy of whatever it is they’re wanting to borrow.

I don’t mind if people actually WATCH them and then GIVE THEM BACK. I just can’t bear it when you lend somebody something and they have it for like six months and you have to hassle them to bring it back, and when they actually do they haven’t even watched it. Particularly if they asked to borrow it in the first place.
