Stargate Atlantis Cancelled
August 22nd, 2008
I woke up this morning to some really unexpected news, unexpected, unwelcome and generally confusing (actually more than one piece of news but the other piece is unrelated). Apparently they are cancelling Stargate:Atlantis in favour of making tv movies.
It was just hitting its stride!? It feels like Enterprise all over again. Show finally starts showing a little more promise and then they pull the plug.
SGA and I had our differences, there were a lot of filler episodes, but all the pieces were there. Great cast, pretty good special effects (great for TV) and a premise that I thought interesting. They just had to write more compelling stuff on a regular basis, because when an episode was good it was bloody good!
It’s OK though, the studio tells us, because they’re going to make ‘movies’ and tell SGA stories in a larger canvas. If the SG1 ‘movies’ are anything to go off I look forward to one or two long episodes in the coming year.
Wasn’t it SciFi who cancelled Farscape?
With BSG folding too I’m not sure where this leaves television science fiction at this time. I guess Fringe and Dollhouse are coming but it’s not really the same as a space show. Maybe I’ll go watch some Eureka.

I know! I’m really disappointed in the decision, although in saying that I just watched the first episode of season three of Eureka and I think I can get back into that show, I’m also about to give something called Charlie Jade a watch.
Don’t know much about it.

Charlie Jade was a quickly cancelled show as well, if I remember correctly. Don’t get too emotionally involved.
This Atlantis thing just sucks. We’re looking at the end of Stargate all around, really (I got into that in more detail in my own blog post).
I had the same thought about the state of Sci-Fi on TV. After BSG folds, we’ll pretty much have Heroes and Doctor Who. And Smallville, but that’s on its way out, too. I need me a good space show!
Hmm… when does that live action Star Wars show start?

Even Dr Who is going on break for a year too.
Yeah Charlie Jade only makes it to the 20th episode, but that’s cool at least I already know that.
I’m going to watch Surface at some stage as I picked up the DVD and that only went for a season too. Guess it’s my chance to catch up on all of those boxsets I’ve been meaning to finally watch.

I guess you’re just going to have to wait on the dvds : )
Of course they won’t show them here in Australia.

You can say that, it’s accurate. They’ve waited until the show gets to 100 episodes because then they can syndicate it (whatever that means!).

Sheesh, what is wrong with these people !!!!!!
We have it on here, but it clashes with another programme, so I don’t get to see it, but have seen bibs and bobs of it.
Instead we have crap (I know I am allowed to say that) like Gossip Girls and Cashmere Mafia. **rolls eyes**

It’s not an art form it’s a business unfortunately and rather than looking at the storytelling potential they’re concerned with how much money they can squeeze out.

…this news just killed my friday…I bet a ’save SGA’ viral vid won’t help…
I even liked last ‘friday’s’ (for me saturday) episode with the whole replicator stuff.
Couldn’t they just have the decensy (sp) of finishing the season! *cries some more*.

ok …so they will finish the season and wrap it up with a movie and continue with movies…and probably start the 3rd spin off…but it still sucks HARD!

Hi Lee,
Quite gobsmacked and disappointed. I agree that the show had some great stories.
I remember once, one of the actors talking about how some of the stories were similar to SG1’s, but personally I found SGA to be a good watch and didn’t try and compare some of the stories and characters. I do hope they make some SGA movies and SG1 movies carry on.
Also I know they used to use sets for both SGA and SG1 (e.g. moving things around, repainting, a change here and there etc), thus sharing the cost and along with staffing, I guess after SG1 stopped a SGA episode started costing more?
Cheerio

Apparently the cost was the biggest issue here but I also think they’ve got a new show being given the green light and possibly wanted to clear the decks so to speak so they don’t get the over saturation that Trek suffered at one point.
I actually prefer SGA over SG1 but in saying that the new series sounds like it has a bit of promise also.

I’ve listened to the interview..the interviewer almost sounded irritated sometimes… The answers sometimes sounded like a corporate answer trying to twist things into a positive view. But we’ll see.

Oh cool, I didn’t listen to the interview. It’s another boneheaded move by Scifi channel - they’ve done it before with Farscape - look that story up it is actually an interesting read into production house/studio politics.

I wasn’t as disappointed at first, I thought I could cope with movie length eps. However, you are right. Science fiction is headed for a drought. Dr Who is on a break, no SG1, BSG (I didn’t know they were cancelling that too?!), I’m not really into any others… What to watch?!

I’ve started exploring some of the older series that I haven’t had the chance to watch and I’m revisiting some old friends (I’m a little way in to Babylon 5 season 4).
We do have Stargate: Universe which sounds really good but I feel like I’m cheating on SGA
