Why does cinema popcorn taste so good?
August 22nd, 2008
We have one of those air popping popcorn making machine things, it’s not in the shape of any cute animals though. For some reason there was a stage there where all superfluous kitchen appliances where coming in the shapes of cartoon animals or snowmen etc. We avoid them most of the time because Tracey hates appliances, hates them. I dislike them but am generally suckered in by advertising and the idea of deep fried tofu and freshly baked bread without the effort. But I digress.
Anyway we have an old popcorn maker and so when we were living on our own we used to make our own on movie night at home. Now days it’s a quick trip past the local cinema (which has really cheap popcorn) and we just duck in, grab some popcorn and take it home.
Why would one do this?
Well the cinema is quite close and damnit the cinema popcorn just tastes better.
It does!
I have no idea what they cover it in to make it so yummy but I want some and can’t replicate it at home. Microwave popcorn tastes different, that popcorn salt you can buy doesn’t taste the same.
It’s just one of those things that you just can’t make at home. Of course it beats how they used to make it in ancient times where they would heat up sand and then after the sand was hot enough mix through the corn kernals.
Mmmmm gritty.

It’s the Soylent Green they mix through the pop corn.
And yes, you’ll probably have to Google Soylent Green to get the joke

I dont usually have popcorn when I watch movies but if I do always eat chocolate with it, I reckon it tastes better. But yeah, microwave popcorn tastes a bit different… but they smell nice.

Oh yeah, salty stuff generally is yummier when you mix chocolate, I love salty potato chips and then a bite of chocolate, so I can imagine popcorn is the same.
Malteezers are my favourite when it come to the cinema!
Oh yeah your site is the place I watched the Max Payne trailer btw! Cheers for that.

OMG !!! You are so right.
And I googled Soylent Green… hahaha Jayne.
We have loads of gadgets, my hubbie loves gadgets. He doesn’t use them, just buys them.
My fitness trainer told me the more flavour some stuff has, the more crap they have put in it.
So take comfort in the fact the air popped stuff is healthy for you.

Kitchen appliances just take up either A: bench space or B: cupboard space!
Yeah I’m pretty sure that cinema popcorn is the least healthy option… I might get some tonight

Dude nice Gravatar!!!
I didn’t wind up having popcorn tonight, chocolate ice cream instead

Apparently the best way to make popcorn is to use coconut oil to pop them and Gee instead of butter to coat them. that’s what I was told by a real live american anyhow.

Why?
Because when it costs as much as the admission ticket you’re not gonna say otherwise, that’s why!
I took my nephew to see the Clone Wars movie last weekend.
Admission for one adult and one child cost €16 - popcorn for two, a large Coke and a 500ml bottle of water cost - wait for it - €17.30!
!!
I feel a Leo Getz moment coming on…

LOL Leo Getz, my favourite scene from that film, we quote it often here.
The local cinema here is kind of an independent chain in that they are locally owned and have the cheapest tickets and really really cheap popcorn.
If I had to get it from one of the bigger chains I wouldn’t bother. But you can get a decent serve of popcorn and a drink for around $5 so not too shabby.

I’ve never been a fan of Popcorn so I’ll just take your word for it.

Butter, real butter. Not the unsalted kind, real butter with salt. Melted before you pour it over the popcorn and then add some more salt.
I can’t make it, I suck at making popcorn that tastes any good but hubby does a great job of it. That is the only reason I keep him around

Personally I prefer to coat my air popped corn with icing sugar and cinnamon.
And I love my gadgets, especially my kitchen gadgets, they all get a work out at least once a week.

Whenever I put butter on my popcorn it seems to shrivel up into some sort of popcorny goo.
I was wondering if there were any sweet tooth popcorn eaters out there!?
My mum is a huge fan of caramel popcorn and of LollyGobbleBlissBombs.

Movie popcorn is great, but you have never had real popcorn until you have genuine kettle korn. The best place to get it is your closest pumpkin farm (seasonal of course). At least that is the only place I usually find it. Not sure what is on it, but they put the kernels in a 3′ kettle and stir it with what looks like a boat oar until they pour it out to be bagged for us consumers. Popcorn heaven is the best way to desribe it.
