Posterous: when you can’t get enough social media

August 21st, 2008

Zen Habits mentioned this via his Twitter feed and asked what everyone thought of it, I’d never heard of Posterous and was slightly intrigued, enough to do as it suggested and just email a message through to see what the site would do with it.

You see Posterous is a blogging platform with a slight difference, it is built primarily around emailing your posts in, photos, mp3s, text etc.   You email the site and it will automatically set up the post for you.

Actually I think it’s the easiest registration I’ve ever had to do because all you do is email what you want your first post to be and it will automatically set up your account, post the email and send you a message advising how to access and set up a password etc.

So whilst I really don’t need another avenue to vent my thoughts etc I’m going to use it as a picture blog and post a drawing a day there.   Most of these images will already have been posted here and I will continue to do so but this is a streamlined list of my visual ideas alone.

Anyone who wouldn’t mind a blog but doesn’t want to go through the crap to set one up and would like it to be nice and simple could really consider it.

It also appears to be a really nice community as I got a couple of welcome messages and encouragement.

What did you think of Wordpress?

I’ve had to pull a lot of my own sites back in to focus on drawing, writing and QYDJ (with a little urban cultivation on the side)

Interesting. I’m thinking of setting up a blog just for my Social Stories. This might be the avenue to use.

For some reason people who come visiting my site for the Autism Therapy stuff sometimes get a little unsettled by the other content :D

I know it is really easy to use and if you’re not worried about templates and just want a raw stream of consciousness then this is so the place to do it!

Just checked out the site and didn’t know that’s how it would handle documents, that’s pretty bloody awesome actually.

I think they actually do a better job with the documents than wordpress does - I like how it is all shown on the screen.

what is that word… embedded? I like that.

Yeah I think it’s very clever, it handles embedded stuff really easily and effectively.

I think it would probably be my secondary blog of choice. You know if you had a spinoff blog I would do it through that site.

I agree secondary blog of choice. It really is too easy.

Also just noticed this on the bottom of the emails advising there is a reply to my comment

“This email is sent by the winged monkeys working in the background of Quit Your Day Job, don’t reply to this email as it may make them angry and do little for you (*sigh* I know you’re going to hit reply).”

Which really really really makes me want to hit reply just so I can hear the *sigh*.

LOL well if you do I won’t know about it because it honestly doesn’t come to me, it goes off to Tron land and fights in the disk arena fights only to perish through lack of preparedness.

    I assume.

Well if you are looking for simple I think you hit the mother lode. I tried it with a post that I had decided not to use and it was super super simple. Crazy but they might be onto something here. Not so much for those of us that use the net all the time but for all those that can barely email. In that case if those people want a blog it would be a match made in heaven… thanks for the tip I will pass it on to my computer/internet-hindered friends

I think it is a really good supplementary blogging system, almost everyone I know that blogs has a second blog (a spin off blog) and instead of looking after another full blown site it is so easy to use.
