To iron your jeans or not to iron…

August 18th, 2008

Do you think Wolverine irons his jeans?

Jeans started off as durable work pants in the US but went on in the 50s to become the symbol of a rebellious youth especially in the post-war Europe who were embracing American culture at the time and horrifying their parents with these mass produced imported studded blue jeans.

Jeans later went on to transcend counter culture and become a staple of designer clothing.   They have become part of our everyday and are not uncommon at almost any type of function dressed up with a sports coat or at the other end of the spectrum, a beer logo emblazoned singlet.   The office is probably the last place that jeans have not grabbed a defensible foothold (except maybe on dress down Fridays) although it’s coming along.

Now I’m firmly in the iron my jeans camp.   I don’t put a crease in them, but the wrinkles should definitely be removed.   I mean you’re wearing denim, how relaxed do you really want to look?   Yes I know the wrinkles work their way out but I can’t think of something easier to iron (handkerchiefs probably).

I’m anti crease, that’s getting a little too anal for my liking, if you have a crease in your jeans then the music is probably too loud for you or your Mum should stop doing your ironing.   Sorry.   You should do your own ironing.

Besides which my favourite jeans are some acid ripped ones that would look decidedly silly with the tears and a carefully ironed crease.   Tracey disagrees, jeans are to be washed then worn and then not washed for bloody ages and never ironed.

So what do you guys think?

Iron your jeans?

    Lee, what’s an iron?

In all seriousness, Hugh Jackman as Wolverine probably WOULD iron his jeans. The whole broadway thing, you know…

The role of Wolverine should have been played by Glen Danzig. He would NOT have ironed his jeans. They would come out of Hell’s Laundry perfectly creaseless.

You want me to tear my eyes from his crotch for long enough to asses if the jeans have been ironed? Bah!

I’m with Kay in the ‘whats an iron camp’.

Only thing that gets ironed in our house is hubby’s work shirts and he does that himself. I’m not even sure where he keeps the iron.

yep, some ironing always necessary. It’s the washing that hurts the jeans, not the wearing. The second day jeans look best, not quite ironed, but not crushed.

Nudie jeans (that take 6 months with no washing to wear in) are a fabulous example of how you can make your jeans your own, and also appreciate how worn in jeans look great and that washing them takes it away!

I’m starting to embrace the not washing my jeans for extended periods thing. I don’t know if it’s a fashion thing, more a lazy thing ;)

I’m a firm beleiver of ironing jeans after washing them, but I then wear them 2 - 3 days straight before throwing them in the washing basket. Less if I get food or dirty dog feet on them.

I mean, it takes a day to wear them in again after shrinking the demin in the wash.

You have to iron the jeans so that you have a starting point, you can’t start off looking crinkled, that’s something that you build up to!

It’s nice to know there is some sanity out there!

PS: I started the pencils for the Ghost Rider picture this weekend too, it’s a large picture at this stage - A3 (may get shrunk but it’s that big at this stage).

Iron? I only iron “on demand” and that usually is only work pants and shirts! I find if I hang up my jeans after washing they are “straight enough” for wearing.. but if I leave them crumpled in the basket after washing too long, then a quick iron is unfortunately necessary.

But that crease thing - yep, I had to suffer that when I was a kid and my parents ironed my clothes insisting that it had to have a crease. After we’d grown up, I remember the day we convinced Dad not to put a crease in his own jeans.. life!

This opens a whole new branch of thought now, does one tumble dry their jeans? You reminded me because a tumble dryer generally negates needing to iron lots of stuff.

    I don’t think you’re supposed to though.

I was reading in a gentlemen’s style magazine (I know everyone, settle down) that if you wish to maintain the look of your 501 jeans (if you’re lucky enough to still own a pair, although I have it on reasonable authority that they are coming back… god I’ve really got to go read some comics!) you should only dry clean them.

I don’t remember if I suffered the crease through my childhood, I remember Mum ironing my jeans but I don’t remember if I was stuck with a crease, I might have to call her and ask her opinion.

I am an iron maniac, believe me, but I do not iron jeans.

Neither would Wolverine. He would allow them to naturally de~crease, let’s face it, he fills them nicely, doesn’t he ?? ;)

No I can see Wolvie with a big cigar slaving over an iron trying to get those creases out of his jeans.

Man wants to look good :)

If you need to iron your jeans then you apparently aren’t generating enough body heat to get the creases out :p

Seriously, I’m with WS - I too am an ironing freak, there isn’t much that doesn’t get ironed, but jeans are on the non-ironing list.

And tumble drying them is great for getting rid of the creases and great in winter to put the jeans on straight out of the dryer. Mmmm warm clothes to put on :)

Been away since last thursday and had a hell of a reading up to do…
    - Iphone: ha! that’ll teach you to try and get along with high-tech stuff.
    - the helmet..build in an alarm that you are incoming..that should save some bumping (yay I’ve become a tag!). Oh and on my low-tech samsung e900 I can just use mp3’s from cousin Larry.
    - theme: I think I like this one..I’ll have a good look around
    - Fonts: my grandpa worked in a newspaper press..he knew his fonts. In assignments I’m forced to use Times New Roman pt12
    - I don’t iron my pants..or anything except my posh blouse for my suit.

Apparently there are people out there who put a neat crease in their jeans. I don’t get it myself but then people don’t seem to get ironing jeans either.

    It’s a weird world. :)
