The Clone Wars - Spoilers without even seeing the film!
August 13th, 2008
Yawn.
Oh sorry, I was thinking about a badly animated Star Wars film set in between the real Star Wars films but not featuring any of the actor’s voices except for one.
Yawn.
Ok got to stop doing that.
The problem I have with the new Star Wars animated film is that I can’t see the point of actually going to a cinema to watch it. For one thing I can tell you with reasonable assurance most of the outcome of the film because it’s set between two movies that follow on fairly smoothly anyway.
The other thing is don’t get attached to the young Jedi girl that the film seems to focus on (and I’m told is rather annoying anyway in a Bratz kind of way). She dies. Maybe she doesn’t die in this film, it being animated I expecting they won’t go down that path (maybe but I doubt it). But she most certainly dies, at the very least with all the other Jedi’s in Revenge of the Sith, so don’t bother becoming emotionally attached to her.

I’m also willing to bet that R2D2 does amazing new things that he hasn’t already displayed the ability to do so in the live films. Or maybe he just provides more comic relief (I’m not sure why I said ‘more’).
The other thing about an animated movie is that it isn’t even impressive on a special effects basis. You may loath the storyline of Jurassic Park but you still have to give a big word up to the T-Rex. In an animated film you can pretty much do anything visually and walking machines going up the side of a giant wall isn’t that much of an accomplishment. In fact it is not impressive at all and that is something Lucas relies heavily upon.
I also suspect there are no animated gophers in this film which is an extraordinary mistake. I only hope that the Star Trek film has a USS Gopher ship manned purely by animated gophers.
I know that in the entertainment industry there is a need to make money and the art of it generally takes a back seat but do we really need this film, this is purely a money making exercise. If they did an animated film set after Return of the Jedi using the original actor’s voices then that would be an event.
This film just isn’t an event, and that’s what Star Wars used to be all about.
*** Update ***
kathleenjoy on twitter let me know that Harry Knowles even hated this film and that’s saying something!

If you had told me ten years ago that I would be reluctant to go see anything with lucas’ name on it I would have laughed in your face.

Yeah you and me both but the bastard keeps belting me every time I get even vaguely excited about something with his name attached to it.
I still wake up in the middle of the night crying out about lead lined refrigerators. It makes me unpopular with the wife let me assure you of that.

I saw the promo ’special’ on this the other night. I got the impression that they are making a movie to launch an animated series.
Cash cow. Pure and simple.
Doesn’t interest me in the slightest.

It’s so sad that this just amounts to going back to the well for a little more cash.
They had an animated series that is not too bad already, which is why I don’t really understand the need for this.

I thought for a moment that it was an add for the tv-series too..but it’s a ‘movie-add’. Sad.
Thankfully I’ve got plenty of stuff to watch..

It’s the ewok movies all over again
Maybe not quite that bad, or maybe it is?

George Lucas gave up his ‘director’ status long ago and happily accepted the mantle of ‘businessman’.
I certainly agree with the yawns. Of course, I’ve been yawning since RotJ…

There are moments in the new trilogy that I can stomach, but then there are whole chunks that don’t so much make me angry more bored. I’m thinking pod race straight off.

They should of done it in 3D.

I’m not even sure 3D would help this, I don’t want them to use 3D as some gimmick for weak material.
But it certainly needs something!
