QYDJ Film Festival: Night Four - Second star to the right
August 6th, 2008

The Ghostbusters theme is stuck in your head isn’t it? Don’t worry if you watched both Ghostbusters 1 & 2 then it should only take 2.3 days for the tune to get out of your head. Tonight is space night. Specifically swashbuckling space night. I’m not going to make you sit through any long, deep and heavy scifi tonight - maybe next film festival but tonight I’m going for the good ol’ fashioned round-up.
Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country
Possibly my favourite of the Star Trek films, I love the whole idea of one last hurrah for Captain Kirk and his crew. Everyone gets to shine and have a special moment in this film. There are some extraordinary moving scenes, powerful scenes and fun. I know it’s not nice but it’s always a delight to watch the Enterprise take quite a walloping (Scotty’s words not mine). Look out for the torpedo that passes through the main hull and the ever so cool scene when Kirk stands, raises his fist and orders ‘fire’ and of course the moving ending.
Also watch out for the Christian Slater cameo, apparently he was pretty excited to be on set, as I would have too, seeing the old crew in action for the last time.
Serenity
Ok I just mentioned watching the Enterprise taking heavy fire is morbid fun, watching the Serenity slam into the ground is absolute agony but I just love it. Serenity is good fun and even if you didn’t watch the series (and shame on you) there should be enough in here to keep you entertained. In fact I do wonder what it would be like to watch without bringing any television series baggage in to see it.
It’s classic baddies versus the scallywags who are just trying to stick it to the man.

It’s Wrath of Kahn for me; the franchise could have stopped there and I would have been pretty happy.
Though the zero-G Klingon blood was nice.
and the Shakespeare-spouting captain as well.

I missed the series because, frankly, I hardly knew it existed before it had been cancelled (and it was shown on channels I had no access to at the time)…
but I did love “Serenity”
and “Undiscovered Country” was fun, too.
(Actually, am still hacked that they moved the last few seasons of Angel to a channel I had no reception on… especially as I enjoyed the show way more than Buffy)
