Housekeeping - mugshots and replies
August 4th, 2008
Now that I have a little more free time up my sleeve (for those of you who don’t follow my Twitter feed - my contract was not renewed on Friday so I’m currently falling back on my other profession: world’s worst drug lord) I thought I’d clean up around here and sort out some things that have been bugging me.
First off I have reinstated the gravatars back into the comments fields so everyone who has a gravater will now have their smiling mugs next to their comments. I like the plugin I use because it is easy to specify the image to be used when you don’t have a gravatar. If in fact you don’t have a gravatar you should really consider it and pop over to http://en.gravatar.com - it’s free and you don’t need a blog because it is linked to your email address.
Secondly I am changing the way that replies work, anyone who has ever commented here before know that when I reply you get an email advising you of this. Sometimes this gets a little confusing to read in the actual comments list and I used to combat it with using your name to denote that I was talking to you. Well no more as I now have threaded comments that will automatically email you when you get a reply to your comment - from anyone.
That’s right you can now directly address your comment to someone else’s - just click either reply button and that will add your comment to theirs. Of course you can still just go to the bottom of the list and comment directly to the post. Don’t worry it makes sense when you look at it.
I’m hoping these changes might promote a little more discussion on the topics amongst everyone rather than just a back and forth with me (not that I don’t dig that!)
In the coming days I will be addressing the side columns and their overflows but for now this got some stuff out of the way.

Cheers, I’m not overly concerned at the moment, taking a couple of days to flesh out the resume and get a couple of other things I’ve been trying to get done out of the way.
I wonder if the gravatar will automatically update all your previous posts?
I guess we’ll see.

I love the sound of that plugin or whatever (yeah, shhhhh) sometimes my commentors have a bit of a chat in my comments and it is fantastic, but sometimes confusing when you have to keep scrolling up and down. Wonder if my wonder host will let me have that
can you let me know what it is called so I can do some grovelling?

And good luck finding another job cause drug lord comes with a really unflattering uniform.

The plugin is called Wordpress Thread Comment - it came out of china and I had to do a little editing on it to get it looking just right but it is probably not too bad straight out of the box.
So far I’m quite happy with it.
Tell me about it (re the drug lord), at least it’s not ghetto pimp, I don’t think I could walk on those platform shoes.

Oh, yeah, I’m using that plug-in. Also, I think that’s the plug-in that is generating the Engrish mail notifiers that people get when someone replies to them.
Which are awesome. I should really get round to editing them into proper English, but I kind of love the nonsense of it all.
What Gravatar plug-in are you using, if you don’t mind me asking?

It certainly is the very same plug-in, I had to fix up a little of the code to suit my requirements and definitely updated the Engrish greeting (which you’re possibly reading right now).
I’m using Wordpress Gravatars 2.7.1 as the gravatars plug-in and it generally works a treat.

Oh, no, that’s much better then comedy translation responses… I will have to make the necessary changes asap!
That’s peculiar… I was fairly certain I had gravatar support at my two sites, but I can’t find them in the plugins right now…
How are you finding CommentLuv? Working well/not so well? Slowing down your site?

Wordpress has gravatar support built in automatically, I just like having a little more control over it.
I might have to enable more than 5 responses otherwise I have no idea what will happen.
I’ve used CommentLuv for over a year now and I’ve always really liked it, I know it slows things down a little but no one has complained yet.

Hey, thanks for pointing out this plugin. I’d been using a combination of a couple plugins to try to get this functionality, and still failing. I still use it in combination with Ozh’s Absolute Comments, but it’s a great addition for me.
Now if only I could figure out how to move the gravatars, I’d be in business.

Do you have the appropriate beanie for the drug lord look? I’ll lend you mine if you like? lol

It’s sad to read about your contract ending, or is it? In fact, is this really a chance to move on to something fresh and more interesting?
Yes, I am a ‘glass half full’ kinda guy

No Ian it’s a really good thing, it was just sudden is all but that’s the life of a contractor.
No I’m taking a couple of days to do some of my own stuff - hell might even finish that ghost rider piece - just in time to hang on junior’s wall
