QYDJ Film Festival: Night Two - The cheque is in the mail

August 4th, 2008

Welcome to the second night of the Quit Your Day Job Film Festival!   How did you go last night?   More than enough one liners and testosterone?   Well I hope not because tonight we’re taking it up another notch with another favourite actor of mine: Kurt Russell.

This man is awesome.

Team him up with John Carpenter and I can pretty much watch them produce anything, which I think the second film that I’ve chosen for tonight is a good example.

Big Trouble in Little China

Honestly this is one of my favourite films of all time, I have a love hate relationship with the idea of them doing a sequel.   On the one hand I’d love to see what ol’ Jack Burton is up to but at the same time I don’t want them to stuff it up!

Long before Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon Jack Burton rolled into Little China, right into Lo Pan and ‘his buddies flying around on wires cutting everybody to shreds’.

So where was BTILC’s Academy Award?

Sadly overlooked.

This film is all shades of awesomeness, not one character misses their mark.   Forget the 80s special effects, it only adds to the charm.   If you’re looking for a perfect example of an all-American hero you can’t go past this film.

Escape from LA

Nope, not going to lie to you.   Not a perfect film.   Not even remotely a good film, but if you dig amongst the problems and the cringe worthiness you will find a couple of rough gems, I assure you.   There are scenes in this film that if you just saw them you would say they are from an awesome film.

Unfortunately they are not.

This film is included because I want to show that even at their worst there are still moments of entertainment and Russell/Carpenter brilliance.   The fact that Russell can still fit into his old Snake Pliskin costume is a true testament to the man.   Even in a weak film like this the Snake character is a true presence on screen.

Stay with it too until the end, the end is brillaint.

Who can forget him, He is an ideal Hero which can be a symbol of success for any movie. Escape from LA will be remembered for centuries without any doubt and he make this immortal.

I watch Big trouble in little China almost every time it’s on tv, classic. Haven’t seen Escape from LA..at least I can’t remember it. I did hear the escape from NY ost a couple of times, funny dialogues and fitting music, I’ll have a listen to the LA score.

John Carpenter used to always do his own soundtracks - his Halloween is ground breaking and I love pretty much all of the others.

It has been so many years since I watched Tango and Cash, all I can remember is Stallone saying some unkind things about Rambo.

This is a great meme - and I’m really enjoying the posters you’re putting together to illustrate it.

Cheers Rol, I’m enjoying putting them together and think I might run with this and do it every year because there are so many more films that I would like to show off to people!

I’m also thinking of doing a comic book festival.

Kudos still have to go to Lazy Eye Theatre (for the idea) and Becca (for the tag)

I think you know how much I love Big Trouble… a proposed sequel? Really? I think my thoughts echo yours on that one.

Funny thing about Escape From LA… again, I pretty much echo your comments - have to say, for all its flaws, I think the ending Show spoiler ▼

felt very cool the first time I saw it… and the second…

I’m probably up for a Carpenter/Russell controlled sequel, maybe with a third writer for Big Trouble. There was a script floating around the interwebs at some stage for a sequel - don’t know if it was legit though.

The end pretty much makes it for me with Escape from LA, that and the scene where he throws the can up in the air.

Oh I’m slapping a spoiler code on your comment too for those yet to experience the joy.

Apologies also if this comes through to you twice - I think the spoiler code messed with the threading.

I remember going to see Escape in the theater and waiting, waiting for that Bruce Campbell cameo. His make-up in that movie is great!

And you are right it’s a not perfect movie but it’s certainly worth a viewing!

And Big Trouble…man o man that is greatness in cinema form that is…

Actually I saw Escape at the cinema also, I remember being excited about it for ages and then feeling a bit let down but not understanding why at the time.
