Movie for each year of my life
July 16th, 2008
Over at Electronic Cerebrectomy Samurai Frog wrote out a list of his favourite movie from each year of his life. It’s an interesting mix of movies and he suggested that we should all give it a go so I’m doing exactly that. The only difference is I’m going to say that the way I’m choosing the films is the one that I would prefer to watch right now out of each year.
1977: Star Wars - what can I say it is iconic.
1978: Superman: The Movie - the start of the big comic book films love the tagline for it, you’ll believe a man can fly.
1979: Star Trek: The Motion Picture - arg such a horrible toss up between Alien, The Black Hole and Star Trek, I gotta go with Trek but it’s a hard choice.
1980: The Empire Strikes Back - the best of all the Star Wars films - The Blues Brothers is a very close second.
1981: Raiders of the Lost Ark - before there were gophers, before there were fridges there was the Ark.
1982: Blade Runner - yeah I could watch that right now, First Blood and Star Trek 2 nearly won out.
1983: Porky’s 2: The Next Day - yes this beats Jedi out right at this moment, there is a scene where one of the guys is dressed like a zombie but he is really drunk, brings tears to my eyes everytime.
1984: Ghostbusters - it’s obvious really, Star Trek 3, Gremlins and Terminator all brilliant but nothing beats the superstars of the supernatural.
1985: My Science Project - I love this film and I haven’t seen it in such a long time, just lots of fun.
1986: Big Trouble in Little China - Kurt Russell’s equivalent to Ghostbusters, it’s just awesome fun.
1987: Adventures in Babysitting - this a late night favourite.
1988: Die Hard - revolutionised the action genre and is 48 floors of fun (or however many floors there are Ho, Ho, Ho).
1989: Batman - the Tim Burton vision, I still love it to this day, I try not to compare it to Batman Begins, they are completely different takes on the character and I like both equally.
1990: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - this is really hard to buy on DVD here in Australia, you can get the inferior sequels but the original live action film is scarce.
1991: Terminator 2 - the high point of the Terminator franchise, I don’t know if this will ever be equalled.
1992: Batman Returns - still my favourite of the series, I love the scene where he rips off the cowl, amazing soundtrack, yeah I could watch this.
1993: Jurassic Park - I love dinosaurs and I consider this one of Spielberg’s last great films. Man that T-Rex is awesome.
1994: Ed Wood - I love the story of Wood, considered the worst director of all time. He has such great enthusiasm and love of film even though he’s horrible at it.
1995: Hackers - so inaccurate it makes Tron look like a documentary, but I just love having this film on in the background, especially when working late at night.
1996: Twister - whenever this is on TV it holds my attention every time and for some reason I don’t actually own it on DVD (a fair amount of this list is in my collection).
1997: Starship Troopers - another film that I love popping on in the background whilst I do something, the effects look great and I’m about to watch Troopers 3 so I’m in the mood for it.
1998: The Big Lebowski - I adore the Dude, Armageddon may have kick ass space shuttles but the Dude abides.
1999: EDtv - I was just talking about this the other day, commenting how good it was so following my instructions this is a film I wouldn’t mind watching now if given the choice.
2000: Gone in 60 Seconds - This film is just plain fun and I haven’t watched in a while.
2001: Zoolander - this was another hard year to pick from. No, Princess Diaries did not make it, it’s on again this weekend.
2002: Reign of Fire - I really enjoy this dragon tale, I don’t think it got enough attention when it came out.
2003: The Return of the King - it was a great ending to the trilogy, long, which is why I don’t tend to watch it very often.
2004: Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story - if you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball.
2005: Serenity - I love this film, one of my favourites of all time. The Serenity crashing… oh my.
2006: Rocky Balboa - this film does what Rocky does best and that’s the underdog comeback.
2007: Live Free or Die Hard - only because I have the ‘adult’ version that I’ve yet to watch the whole way through, I watched the theatrical version thinking it was a good idea for a Die Hard film.
2008: Iron Man - I could watch this over and over.
Phew.
Wow, that was a lot harder and time consuming than I thought it would be. I’d be impressed that any of you made it to the bottom of this list.
So feel free to do what I did and steal the idea and twist it to your own requirements.

Cool list… and I am SO going to have to do this… though unfortunately mine will have to go back a few extra years.

LOL about halfway through the list I wished I was a lot younger! But it is a cool idea and I found it interesting. Wikipedia is of course your friend in finding movies from each of the years.
Let me know if you do it!

A great and very accurate list
Except for maybe one or two I’d probably add the same. The Big Lebowski is probably one of my all time favourites. I remember a few years back spending a whole night with friends just quoting from the movie (and cleaning the fridge for beer), so many “gullkorn” as we say in Norway.
@Lee - http://www.imdb.com/Sections/Years/ would also be a good place to start looking…

Great list. Starship Troopers was just a hair away from being my 1997 movie, and Lebowski was nearly my 1998 movie, too.

I have to say this: Porky’s II has some of the best comeuppance I’ve seen in a comedy.

I also said it on Culture kills..gotta do this one somewhere too, in the future. But I’ve already got some concepts for the next couple of posts..and they pull rank.
On the list: awesome..but the humor in movies like Porky’s (or revenge of the nerds etc) eventually makes me hurl, can’t help it haha.

Thomas - for some reason your first comment fell into the spam trap, but the second one didn’t??? Weird.
Big Lebowski is one of my all time favourite films, I love it on so many levels.
Besides that rug really tied the room together.

Samurai Frog - You had a really interesting list because it really showed the scope of your movie tastes. There were a bunch of movies that easily could have made this list and I found myself wanting to say over and over - but this film could’ve made it etc.
Troopers is just one of those films that I love in the background when I’m working - I just got a copy of three and am really looking forward to a moment to sit and watch it. It appears to have the nudity that the second one lacked - ironically the one scene I happened to flick to was a very lengthy nude sequence that seems rediculous
[Reply to this comment]
Porky’s 2 is completely undervalued for its comic genius but I’m glad the spirit is still living on in American Pie etc.
Oh god I hope that don’t think about a remake…
[Reply to this comment]
Sujoy it was a hard marathon, but Samurai Frog had an extra year to contend with! So hats off to him!

Arjan, I highly recommend settling in with a cup of hot joe when you do your list it is quite the odyssey!

There is a Starship Troopers 3 ??? Must hunt it out. We have our own copy of Starship Troopers 2.
Never watched Porky’s. Loved all of LOTR and Star Wars.
Just watched Serenity last week. I love how River deals to the Reefers. I also wanted to see Mal and Inara end up together. I hate seeing all those longing stares eventuate to nothing. (I think it’s a chick thing)

Widdle Shamrock - Oh yes there most certainly is a Troopers 3, it is a direct to DVD sequel but it has Casper Van Dion in it again. No idea when it actually comes out, I think September.
Serenity is one of my absolute favourite films and I don’t think it’s a chick thing, Mal and Inara belong together. Although it would be hard for them to do it without losing all that tension and knowing Whedon they’d be together five minutes before she dies.
I really love the crew’s final stand.

Great list. All I need to do is find something for ‘75 and ‘76 but other than that you have done all the hard work for me
Am loving Act 1 of Dr Horribles Sing-Along Blog.

Just to clear the spam thingy… First time I submitted the comment I kept the CommentLuv checked, next time I didn’t. Maybe that’s why…?!
This one is also submitted with CommentLuv checked btw…

That’s funny, now it went in but didn’t grab anything from my blog… WP works in mysterious ways
[Reply to this comment]
And I know I have a copy of My Science Project kicking around on VHS… that movie has a lot going for it: Dennis Hopper, M-16s, a whole bunch of freaky ass stuff.

Marita - I finally got to see Act 1 - it is so great!
[Reply to this comment]
Thomas - what it may have done is seen two URLS and flagged it because I think I have it set up to that by default (little too touchy - I’ll fix that). Sometimes commentluv doesn’t work, it doesn’t work on Tracey’s blogs either.
[Reply to this comment]
MC - I really love that film, one of my favourite lines ever:
Why do you wear sunglasses at night?
Because when you’re cool the sun shines on you 24 hours a day.

If I was to pick a film for 1975, I’d say Rollerball.
MCs last blog post..Ricky Gervais gave me something to think about
[Reply to this comment]
Lee thanks for clearing things up! Being a 72′ model (and like MC picking a movie) I’d definitely start the list with “The Godfather”. Never seam to get tired of those old classics…
[Reply to this comment]
MC - I’ve never watched Rollerball and have always meant to give it a look.
[Reply to this comment]
No problem Thomas, if I ever discover a reason why it doesn’t show up I’ll let you know. The Godfather is an extraordinary piece of work, I feel it is on par with the sequel which many feel is better.
[Reply to this comment]
A nice solid list, I reckon… there aren’t many films on there that I couldn’t sit and watch right now, if I had the time.
I’m especially liking that you mentioned Reign Of Fire, as it tends to get badly ripped to shreds, and I kinda like it.
My list is here, if you’re interested: http://nixsight.net/?p=586
[Reply to this comment]
Good list, with the exception of Live Free or Die Hard, which really pushed the envelope of nonsense (Bruce jumping onto a passing fighter jet? Oh, I don’t think so.)
