Top five signs that your DVD collecting is getting out of hand
June 27th, 2008
Looking at our storage facility the other day was a little sobering when we realise how many of our boxes are dedicated to books and DVDs. Books certainly out number the DVDs, we could set up a small library and it makes our removalists miserable. But then I noticed how many boxes of DVDs we have and have many boxes we have actually out.

- You own Batman and Robin because you can’t bear to have an incomplete set, no the commentary is really interesting and… *sob* god I know… they just look better on the shelf all together.
- You know what Amaray packaging is and know that it will make the most of your shelf space when it comes to season two of 24.
- You start sorting them in groups other than alphabetical (it doesn’t have to make sense to other people!)
- You find yourself staring longingly at the new Collectors Edition version of Serenity even though you have a copy of Serenity and can’t work out what the bloody difference is between them so it tortures you in the middle of the night…
- When people talk about having 100s of DVDs you think to yourself “amateur”.

Here’s another:
You pick up a DVD and think to yourself “what is this even about?”
Related to #1 - same thing with Star Trek 5… though at least those are made to create a picture on the spines (or is that just the VHS set?)
Hey, at least you’re not doing that with Superman III and IV… are you?

I’ll add one to the list. You have Metallica live in Rock M Ring, SnM, SnM in 5.1, Live Sh*t binge n purge Seattle n SF, and are searching for the latest Live in Korea DVD.

You walk into the DVD shop and can’t find anything you don’t already own.

Oh Jeff I’ve been tempted by Superman 3 and 4 - the brightly coloured boxes, the matching design so if you were to line them all up they would look like a set… fighting.. urge.. to.. rush.. out.. and.. buy.. them…
Can’t put the Great Wall of China back together with just your eyes… not even vaguely a super power.
*muttering to myself now*

Sujoy - I think that’s more an indication that you have a Matallica problem, take two Guns N Roses and call me in the morning.

Marita - Sigh, it’s so true. K-Mart and Target sales don’t help me out as much as they used to.
It’s bad too though when you notice that you haven’t even taken the plastic wrap off of some of the movies that you just had to have.
[Reply to this comment]
Hahahaha - I have one of those in the house. What’s worse is when you buy something in the shop and you go home and you ALREADY HAVE IT. Bonus points if the one you already own is still in the shrink wrap.
Of course, now that we have a Playstation 3, it’s all about the BlueRay. Once you’ve seen Johnny Depp in high def, you have to go and re-buy ALL of those classics again on BlueRay!

Oh no.I dont have any Metallica problem. The problem is that I don’t have any more space in my DVD cartons (I don’t hv the fancy closets) because I am the one who has all those Metallica DVDs.
And well, GnR , those buggers broke up before releasing more than 3 DVDs, and I have all of them. One of my favorite bands of all time, but wht a shame. Anyway, totally off topic. LOL.

..if you buy a dvd just so you can get discount on the other dvds that you actually like.
Did that..and I don’t even have that many dvd’s. I think around 15 (yeah..really sad) would be a good guess.

Today I bought the AVP box set - all four Alien films, two Predators, and AVP.
I only really like Alien - but it was so cheap ( £12 for the lot… sorry, you’ll have to do the conversion yourself) I couldn’t resist.
I’ll probably never watch any of them.

buying movies is probably more about preserving it than watching haha.

My DVD colleciton is quite modest, and I thought I had it under control, but then I saw #1 on the list.
I do have Batman and Robin and I did only buy it to complete the set. No, seriously, when people see it on the shelf and ask me what I think of it, I say “I Like the costume design”.
Should I be worried?

I own more Playstation 2 games than I own movies on DVD.
Of course, I own 130 games for the PS2, so technically, even though I have a lot of movies, I am still an amateur in that department based on #5…

LOL @ Kay - Oh yeah I know that pain, there have been the odd double up here at the Sargent household. Happens all the time with books too. I’m a little nervous to see what we’ve got duplicates of when we open up our storage facility.
[Reply to this comment]
Oh Bettina I own that godforsaken movie myself, I’ll say it’s because it was cheap at the time but really at the end of the day I have a problem and Batman and Robin is a symptom
It could be worse though, you could have Superman 3 and 4…
Oh god I’m tempted…
Bad.
[Reply to this comment]
Rol - I’ve looked at that pack, hard. I already own all the Predators and Alien films except for AvP, I couldn’t quite bring myself to buy either of those.

hubby wants to buy the complete superman series…….. I’m actively working on keeping him out of the shops
It will be another Rocky fiasco I’m sure *shakes head*
Bettinas last blog post..Does there have to be a reason?
[Reply to this comment]
Ian - I bought Batman and Robin for the commentary where the Director apologises for it
[Reply to this comment]
Bettina - I have the Rocky collection - why would that be a fiasco!! Every man should have himself a copy of the Rocky series - at least the first one!
You can get a nice set of the Superman films that includes the alternative cut of Superman 2 I believe.

MC that’s a sweet number of games you’ve got yourself there - I have a few but nothing like that number. PS2 games cost a heck of a lot more than your average DVD so that makes up for it. Consider yourself out of the amateur box.
[Reply to this comment]
Widdle Shamrock - I’m almost 99.99% sure that there is nothing on the DVD that the original doesn’t have. The US version had very little on it and by the time it made it out here we got two disks.

I’ve been getting some great deals on new and used games since Christmas… which means that they have been averaging out to around the price of an older DVD (in American money, about 6-9 dollars a piece)
Now, I remember when I went on a buying spree near the end of the production life of my other systems, and I have to tell you, the quality of the material I am getting for that price far exceeds anything I used to buy for those other systems… they are, with few exceptions, all quality titles. No real fiascos, no Iron Man the game type situations.
But I have bought games just to get a discount (like buy 2, get one free situations). And I too am a completist. If I like a game in a series, I buy all the games in that series(narrative games, not sports titles).

MC - that’s actually how my collection has been growing too, new and used games are really starting to come down. My local game shop still has PS1 games!
I think I may have bought all the Hitman and Tomb Raider games and a few of the Bond ones.

Here’s a good one: If you have a stack of dvds (including multiple TV boxsets) more than a foot high that you haven’t watched/finished yet, but you’ll get around to it someday….
Oh, and I actually like “Batman and Robin”. And “Catwoman” *ducks*. They’re bad movies, but dammit, they’re good bad movies, just like “House of the Dead”.
[Reply to this comment]
Oh Daria, Catwoman, oh dear. I think you may have deeper problems than just with your piles of DVDs.

I haven’t brought myself to watch Catwoman yet so I won’t cast any stones.
