Jumper: Vader meets Summer and it’s good
June 16th, 2008
Originally the film Jumper snuck up on me, I didn’t know anything about it until I saw the ads on TV for it (there were plenty of those too). Then I didn’t get a chance to go see it, I admit I was more than a little hesitant with Vader himself Hayden Christensen playing the lead and all of the bad reviews it was getting.
I know, I know I judged it on unfair grounds. Christensen was quite good in My Life as a House which makes me question Lucas’s direction in Star Wars (what!? No!? The shock!) and I very rarely listen to reviews. If anything I should have been convinced by the very cool poster that has him standing in long coat on top of the Sphinx (I know I’m shallow and easily bought by a cool poster or trailer).
So I avoided it until this weekend and threw it on in front of pizza bought on the other side of town and bundled in the foil sun shade thingies (how Macgyver of me). What I got (apart from lukewarm pizza - which was still very yummy thank you for asking) was a reasonably rewarding movie that made me think a little and reinforced the idea that I want to read the novel after the recommendation of Captain Incredible originally.
The effects were all pretty cool, but it is the ideas behind it that really spark the imagination, being able to go anywhere you want. I do also like the idea that the main character accepts and uses his powers pretty much straight off instead of not wanting to believe it, or hating his powers or whatever.
Hayden Christensen, Rachel Bilson and Samuel L Jackson were all quite cool, Jackson’s white hair is interesting and if he wants mofo white hair he can have mofo white hair.
They are talking about a sequel and I for one would be quite happy to see one, in the meantime I’m tracking the books down (there’s a sequel to the novel also).

It’s been a while since I saw this one, but I liked it. I’d be happy to see a sequel. I do remember having some nits to pick with it, but at the moment I’m not sure what they were. I think they had something to do with his mother. I also think there’s some more explanation to be had, so maybe that’s what I’m looking for in a sequel. If I remember correctly, it was good, but not as good as it could have been.

I saw this at the movies and enjoyed it. I watched it at home recently and again enjoyed it. I’d welcome a sequel.
Good special effects, an interesting idea and some cool sequences (disappearing and reappearing with a double-decker bus, springs to mind).

Hmm, I forgot to see this one, too - I’ll have to go check it out now! I am also a bit of a SF freak - it’s my favourite genre in novels and movies, and I have to admit to a *ahem* slight X-Files addiction in my teens…

Jeff, you don’t have to dig very deeply to find problems with the film but that’s true of most films. I think it’s screaming for a sequel to flesh out a lot of those questions.

Oh yeah Garth the bus scene was pretty cool actually thinking about it.

Hi Jess and welcome! It is a pretty solid watch, nothing too taxing but entertaining.
You must be pretty excited about X-Files: I want to believe then!

I saw this one a couple of weeks back and it suprised me. I thought it would be very crappy, but I enjoyed it very much.
The only downside was that a friend of mine kept saying ‘ah there’s Vader again’..it got him a slap in the face haha.

Yeah I was surprised myself because I was expecting a lot less and now it’s prompted me to read the books!
It is going to take a while for him to shed that role!

Cool! I’m glad you did actually like it, like Garth said that throwing a bus scene is worth the price of admission!
I still haven’t seen Snakes on a Plane

You are not missing much.
Snakes on a Plane was TERRIBLE IMHO.
Hubby and I just shook our heads in utter disbelief.
Another one I kept changing the channel on.

I expected as much, it looks pretty stupid. I might watch it if it’s on late at night.

Hi again Lee!
I watched this movie, didn’t liked so much because there is no explanation to the facts and the main character use his powers to personal gain, on other side I love Rachel and his role was good.
;D

Hey there Renato, I think that it would human nature unfortunately to use one’s abilities for personal gain like he did in the film, so I don’t really have a problem with that. How many times have you wondered if only I could do ‘whatever superpower’ for personal reasons.
There is a scene in the film where we can see on the news people who are dying in a flood and the main character does nothing despite the fact he could probably save them all. I found that really interesting.

Would you believe, I went to watch this movie at the multiplex on a Wednesday morning, skipped work, lol , for the cheap tickets, just to find out that its only me whos watching it. They refused to screen it , as they told tht they require at least 5 guys to screen a movie, and even offered a refund. I abused and even threatened them of negative publicity (the powers of owning a blog
). And yes, after 15 minutes of heated discussion, I got to watch Jumper as if in a private screening. And I liked it.

Sujoy I can’t believe that they weren’t going to show it! I saw Con Air essentially on my own in a surburban shopping centre cinema, actually there was three of us and we all sat in different parts of the cinema.
