With Battlestar Galactica going off the air until next year (for frak sake that is so frustrating considering the mid-season finale), Dr Who finishing up in a couple of episodes and Torchwood only having a limited run (?) there is a distinct lack of science fiction that I watch coming up.
Fortunately for me there are two shows coming that I am actually quite interested in. Ironically enough I only just found out about these a couple of weeks ago (I’m slipping in my old age!).

The first is Fringe from JJ Abrams and starring our man Pacey from Dawson’s Creek (I currently like supporting everyone from that show except for Katie/She-Tom - I mean sure be in love with the guy but please retain your own personality and stop using his). It’s kind of like X-Files apparently, but different at the same time (no one wants to just be a copy of another show). For me the trailer kind of has a Threshold feel to it, remember Threshold? A science fiction show that I got into and then it was cancelled *sigh
I’m hoping to check out a preview of it sometime soon so I’ll report back on its attention worthiness. I am still yet to watch Alias or Lost so I have no real comparison as far as Mr Abrams is concerned although I did watch a little of Felicity (I didn’t see it all but I hear good things - was that a line from Little Nicky?).

The other show is from someone who’s track record for me at least is pretty much perfect. Joss Whedon’s Dollhouse features Buffy and Angel regular Eliza Dushku and everyone’s favourite Angel scientist Amy Acker (arrrrg the pain is still there when I remember Fred’s death!).
I probably know a little bit more about the plot of this one than Fringe but I’m not as convinced. To be fair I have faith in Whedon and I’m sure the show will be really interesting but I’m not sure if the concept has legs to run as a series.
Both shows look as though they’re well made and seem to have likeable enough cast members but then so did a whole bunch of science fiction shows of late all of which have gone the way side (except for Sarah Connor who I’m not convinced deserved the reprieve). It reminds me that I bought Surface the other day (quite cheaply too I might add) which is a show that I didn’t mind but got cancelled (Invasion, Threshold and Aquaman didn’t even make it past a pilot).
So what do you all think, going to give these shows a go? Could care less? Excited about something else? (please don’t say Caprica!)

Threshold got 13 episodes..and was shown on tv here this year. But I missed one evening (double episodes) and went to torrentland. Sad that it got cancelled. Go check out the miniserie (2 episodes) of Andromeda Strain. It starts strong, the ending sucks a bit but it’s worth the 3 hour watch.
@ The Fringe: gotta love Daniels (bold black guy..) from The Wire, he’s there, JJ Abrams is there..win win.
@ Dollhouse: heard it here first, sounds cool!
Any idea when the release dates are? I couldn’t find it for the Fringe earlier on…

I’m very excited about Caprica (what’s Caprica, I said it only to irritate you. I shall have to look it up)
I am so crap at watching TV that I only get to watch about an hour a week (seriously, although I do watch a lot of stuff on my ipod at work, mainly family guy and south park at the moment).
This means that on our digital hard disk recorder thing at the moment we have season 2 of heroes, season 1 of chuck and dexter, the last half of the season of Dr Who waiting for me to watch them. at one show a week that’s going to last me until the next big thing comes around.

Arjan - was Threshold completed? I mean did they wrap everything up in the final episode or were they taken by surprise with the cancellation?
I’ll have to wait until it’s out on DVD to catch it.
Fringe comes out August 28 in the US and who knows in the rest of the world!? It was pushed back for some reason.
Dollhouse comes out around the same time I believe - one of the shows is on after House when that comes back.
I might have to check Andromeda Strain out as I really love that book and didn’t mind the movie.
Good to see I’m useful for some info at least

Dan you ugly mole! (I’m sorry I didn’t mean that, it just came out) Caprica indeed. Pffft.
I know what you mean, I have all these DVDs to watch and never the time in which to do so, I wind up watching movies I missed on TV late at night it seems recently.
My iPod had Ninja Turtles on it for three months whilst I tried to watch that! I used to watch King of the Hill on it all the time. Now we’re getting the bus into work again I’ll probably start watching me stories on the iPod again.

they didn’t finish Threshold..it ‘ended’ mid-story.
That’s why it sucks so much. But it was worth watching the 13 episodes though.

Marita, apparently I’ll be getting a peek at Fringe tonight (or tomorrow at the latest) so yay!

I haven’t heard anything about Fringe, but I’m always a sucker for the X-Filesy concept. Dollhouse I’m completely sold on though - Whedon and Dushku is pretty much an unbeatable combo for me.

Rol - I didn’t get to see Fringe last night after all but what I did see looks pretty good.
I’m pretty sure that Dollhouse will be a no-brainer in its awesomeness but I’d like to see a little bit more about what they want to do with the series.
I’m sure they’ll both make it past 13 episodes though (I hope!!! Pain Killer Jane did)
