Jaiku vs Twitter

With thanks to Mr Mike Bogle I’m one of the proud “beta” users of Jaiku (you needs you an invite to become a user at this stage).  I like it, it has a couple of features on it that Twitter doesn’t at this stage and they are some attractive features especially the comment feature.

When you reply a bit in Twitter it starts to become a little confusing and if you miss a reply and try to answer later on it is out of context.  In fact earlier tonight I responded to LeighI about a Tweet I did the other day about my laptop bag being really heavy.  My comment now has no real context and I only hope she sees it and knows what I’m talking about!

There is another problem though with Jaiku and it has nothing to do with the system, I don’t know anyone on there!!  It’s easier to find similiar minded people on there because it has a bunch of communities etc but I feel weird just following strangers!

So it feels like I’m screaming out at the dark (except for mbogle of course).

If anyone reading this is also using Jaiku please add me!!

    Hi Lee,

Glad you’re finding your way around Jaiku :) I’m with you about the loss of networking opportunities. Unfortunately it would seem that - barring a large exodus of Twitter users - the prospect of leaving Twitter for anywhere else is going to inevitably result in the loss of most of our social network there.

Of course there will be new users to find I’m sure - but even so, the community that exists on Twitter is such a value-add to the application. Losing them would be a hard pill to swallow.

For what it’s worth I’m doing a proper evaluation of different Twitter-type tools this week and am reporting my findings here.

(Hope you don’t mind the link.)

Interestingly Pownce has proven itself my favourite so far - which is not what I was expecting. If you haven’t heard about it the application is located at http://pownce.com

Anyway nice blog too by the way - I don’t think I’ve been here before. I’m subscribing to your RSS feed as we speak :)

    Cheers,

    Mike

Hmm I’ll just read your twitter in the sidebar.
    In other news (watch out..hijacking)
Your package has arrived today! I’m going to try and convince a beautiful woman (as instructed waaaay back) to wear the Lee-beeds while I take a picture. I’m sure that won’t be a problem.
Those dvd’s are one hell of a soundtrack/score heaven thanks a million!!!

Bettina - I just shut down my Facebook account (well deactivated it anyway) because it’s too much. At the end of the day I want a Twitter type of program to compliment the blog but I’ll pick amongst them and stick with the one - there’s no way I could keep going on all of them!!

Leigh - I’m not quite ready yet to branch out to Plurk - I may have a look sometime in the very near future as I include it in the decision process of working out which service to go with - so far Twitter is still ahead but mainly because I’m already established in it.

Mike - for some reason the link didn’t work or at least isn’t working for me in IE at my workstation - will check when I get home and fix it up for you.

Yeah I hope that Twitter takes a look at what the competition is doing right now and I guess ‘borrow’ some ideas. The comments for instance are really good (although I wouldn’t include them by default in the timeline).

I’ll have a look at Pownce and I have to check out Plurk because people are saying cool things about it.

Arjan - that’s why it’s there (the Twitter feed)!

Glad the package arrived safe and sound - don’t worry about that photo unless you are using it as a line to pick up beautiful women - the promotion didn’t really go anywhere but I said I’d send them. That being said I need to send Dan an army man.

Those soundtracks should keep you going for a while :)

    Hi Lee,

Sorry about that. I noticed I stuffed up the anchor tag after posting the comment but didn’t see a way to edit it again. For the record here’s what I was trying to send through:

isn’t there some kind of tool that let’s you ‘post’ on those different networks with one click and let’s you read the stuff from your contacts in one screen?
Like Trillian did with msn/icq etc…

I think so Arjan but I’ve managed to pump twitter into Jaiku so technically I could continue both just publishing in Twitter - actually one of the guys I follow was working on the reverse so might have to see how that goes.
