One reason I’m eagerly awaiting the return of Stargate Atlantis
June 9th, 2008
So some days I don’t really sing Stargate Atlantis’ praises, often I don’t think it deserves them and I wonder why I’m still watching, habit is the usual explanation I come up with, that and the odd glimmer of hope that the show will improve and the characters will be allowed to grow.
I like the show in general, I’m just not excited by it. But I could be.
This next season is going to be the one that turns it all around for me, it’s going to be awesome because it is ready to take chances and to shake things up.
I’m sure it is.
One of the things that I think could be a really interesting aspect of the story is that Richard Woolsey is apparently taking command of the expedition. I think this is actually a good idea as the character is neither scientist or military. I hope the character steps up and adapts to the new role. Robert Picardo is pretty good no matter what he’s in so I have no fear of the acting abilities.
There are other interesting things coming up for season five but I said ‘one reason’ and I’ll stick to that for now.

I’m waiting eagerly. I don’t know about Woozy, he’s a cool character, but they shouldn’t bring him too over the top.

Bettina - which is why I go and see my cousin Larry (wink wink) to see them because I can’t wait for Australian television to maybe put them on late at night.

Arjan - I’m hoping that they handle him well, it would be easy to make him too much of a joke or really boring.

How could I have missed this post! I cant wait for it to come back either. I dont love Atlantis as much as I loved SG1, but still, I would have to say that the Stargate series is just about my all time favorite series. I love it when it comes on late at night because I love to fall asleep to it. Not because its boring, just because I love the show. I hate falling asleep to the news or some other sitcom sort of show. I always end up opening my eyes to see whats happening. But with Stargate, I can lay there and listen to it because I own every episode and have watched them so much that I already know what is on the screen. But I gotta tell you, I havent heard that Woolsey is heading up the expedition. What about Carter? Are they going to just make her go offworld with Shepard and the team? Usually my Dad looks at all of the spoilers and forwards them to me but he hasnt in a long time.
I did finally get out to see Indiana Jones. It was so-so. Love Harrison Ford, but god is he old. One thing I was disappointed with right off the bat was when they were in the desert and at Area 51, it really had the feel of a sound stage to me. Guess the feeling went away as the movie went on, but it kinda hindered my excitement at the beginning. I was going to go back to your post on it and see if I caught any of the points you made.
Anyways, just keeping tabs on you. I have fallen into the realm of mommy bloggers this time around (havent seen Tisha though….). With working from home now, I dont seem to have the time or gumption to think of much else besides the kid. But always enjoy checking in on you.
Take care - Joanna

Joanna - I’ve got a bunch of other things I’m looking forward to in the next season that I keep threatening to post (I will I will).
Carter is going I believe mainly because Amanda Tapping is going to a new scifi series non Stargate related but on scifi network still. Not sure how they’ll remove her but I think it was always going to be a temporary situation anyhow.
PS it’s always nice to see ya round!

I’m fine with Woolsey taking over that role. They have been shaping his character to be more sympathetic to the program since his original arrogant/abnoxious/ignorant beginnings. I imagine he’ll get a number of minutes where he has to decide where his loyalties lie - IOC (hmmm… that was the first acronym that sprung to mind - must be a leap year) or SGC.
I was never particulaly impressed with Carter in command. She was better as part of the away team.
Wier was pretty good, but I guess she’s chillin’ with the doc and the black sargent at the moment.

Yeah it seems Garth that when a character is no longer favoured by the writers or is a little more difficult to work into plots they opt to cut their loses and kill them off (with the option of bringing them back it would seem). It is also strange as it seems that each of the actors weren’t ready for it and didn’t particularly want to leave? Apparently Weir was offered to come back this season and has flatly refused.
