I’m the Doctor, look me up.

June 8th, 2008

OK I just finished watching the latest episode of Doctor Who and I can honestly say that I’m really glad that Stephen Moffat will be taking over Doctor Who because he has written some amazing episodes and this latest two part episode firmly solidifies that reputation.

This latest episode now has my favourite line from the Doctor:

“Don’t play games with me, you just killed someone I liked and that’s not a safe place to stand.   I’m the Doctor and you’re in the biggest library in the universe… look me up.”

I think it is quite possible that David Tennant is now my favourite Doctor too.

David Tennant as Dr Who

*Sigh* I’m now going to go and watch Battlestar Galactica’s latest episode.   Please be interesting.

It’s a cool show, got some really interesting ideas, not sure what I’m going to do next year when it is only doing a couple of specials instead of the series.

Oh, holy cow! I watched that last week… this is the best freaking episode. It’s been a while since I was salivating for a part 2.

Moffat looks to be the perfect show-runner. Every episode he’s written in each season has been one of, if not the best of the season. He’s easily the strongest writer overall. “Blink” from last year is a contender for my top spot of the rejuvenated series, and it’s essentially a “Doctor-less” episode. Great stuff.

It really looks like he’s got a plan, based on this episode, for some changes he wants to make as well. And aside for the fact that it’s possible Tennant may leave, I’m excited.

    Just realized I wasn’t clear: I saw part 1 last week. I’m… acquiring… part 2 today.

Being a loyal Aunty viewer I’m waiting patiently for them to start showing the new Dr Who season (besides we rather hit our limit with Battlestar and Atlantis*).

I love David Tennant, and I think he might need to be this Thursdays Hot Hunk .

Do you remember the episode last year “Blink” with those creepy stone angels? I got worst nightmares ever from that. Just last night I was wandering around my kitchen at night and caught my reflection in the window and thought - stone angel. Took ages for the heartbeat to calm again.

    * wasn’t going to bother with Atlantis but your reviews made me give this latest season another go, plus how hot is Rodney? :D

Jeff - Blink is right up there for me, just an amazing episode, so well crafted. I’m almost convinced though that this two part story is my favourite.

I’m also quite partial to the episode ‘Dalek’ in the first season of the new series. There is a wonderful moment when the Doctor is looking at a Cyberman head and says something along the lines of one of the most powerful species in the universe and now look at you.

I just thought it was a nice touch on the mythology.

I think that’s the key at this stage the mythology around Doctor Who is being fully developed rather than made up by the fans. There seems to be a plan.

Next episode looks like a filler though :)

Oh Marita you indeed are loyal then, I couldn’t wait I’m afraid. Although it is really cool that ABC2 is showing the episodes again on a Friday night.

What is really cool also is I’m loving how the BBC are showing the episodes online after they’ve appeared on TV (for the UK of course).

Blink is one of the absolute best episodes and the ones I’m talking about here are written by the same fellow.

I think he may have outdone himself here too.

I’m really hoping that Atlantis is really good this upcoming season. I will write my thoughts out about that over the next couple of days.

Okay, I quite literally just finished watching part 2. I thought it was very good, but I liked part 1 just a little more. Blink still holds the top spot for me.

However, I love the whole thing with River Song. I’m still trying to figure out whether they’ll move her into the story over the next few years. They certainly don’t have to - they’ve left enough vagueness in that. My impression is that we may never actually see that relationship again on screen, which is a shame. I could be wrong on that, though.

I agree with you that they’re thoughtfully developing the mythology now, which is really a double-edged sword. It’s definitely interesting, and I can’t wait to see what they do next, but at the same time, the more you define his background, the less mysterious he is, and that mystery is at the center of his character. So it’s a bit of a catch-22; you really want to know the background, but knowing the background lessens the character to some degree.

I also agree about the next episode. Filler. It’s a shame they couldn’t sustain the momentum they picked up last year right around “Human Nature”. The episodes before that were good, but every episode after it was gold.

I would be very happy to see River Song show up in one of the specials they have planned for next year. They’ve got four or something so the forth one would be quite OK.

I think they are handling that double edged sword quite well at the moment and are probably in safe hands with Moffat. There is still plenty of mystery out there, even in the original run when they went to Gallifrey it still didn’t give THAT much away.

If you want to see how much of a good thing Mr Moffat will be I’d recommend downloading the podcast for this weeks Episode, it has Moffat,RTD and Tennant yacking away like the fan boys that they are, the whole commentary is just one big laughter track, it’s so funny and has some great stories from Russell’s youth.

Agreed, Stephen Moffat will be a huge improvement over the lacklustre RTD episodes. Pity Tennant might not be around much longer.

I couldn’t agree more that Steven Moffat taking over as head writer and executive producer is a great thing for the future of the show. His episodes are always eagerly anticipated and they’re not even series openers or closers. Imagine what he’ll do with full creative say over the full series arc!
RTD has done well out of the revival, though - it’s earned him an OBE!

As with everyone, I’m glad Steven Moffat is taking over?

Has anyone seen Jekyl (Steven Moffat’s recent series)? It was ok, only 6 episodes so far (first season), and the second season seems like it will be quite a different beast indeed.

I watched the entire thing one-after-another and I think I should’ve not done that.

I’ve yet to check out any of the podcast commentaries Meg, I should get around to it one day, they have them for Battlestar Galactica too.

Yeah Rol I hope the Tennant thing works out to be just rumours, I’d love to see him stick around for a few more years at least!

It’s a good point that RDT has done an amazing job in reviving the series and full credit to him, I’m impressed that he knows when to hand over the job so he doesn’t become stale unlike the Star Trek powers that be.

Garth - so what am I to do then? Watch Jekyl once a week? Was it just because you wanted to space it out more?
