Do we really need a Robocop remake?
There was some talk a little while ago about Sony potentially remaking Robocop. There were then further rumours that they decided it was a remarkably bad idea since the film wasn’t really that old.
Now I love Robocop one and two and tolerate three so the the initial idea of more Robocop is appealing until I think about the word remake. To make again.
Do we really need to overwrite the original? Is it really necessary to take the original films and stories and replacing them? Is Robocop not iconic enough a character now that we can’t just feature him in a movie that doesn’t absolutely have to follow on from the third film but features the archetype in a story that is worth telling?
I for one do not require another Robocop origin story, I know how and why he was created already. Surely enough people know this too that all that is needed is a very simple recap? Oh yeah he was a butchered cop built into a cyborg body designed to be the ultimate law enforcement resource. Cool. On with the awesome story that has our hero face adversity, overcome peril and return society to the its status quo.
Don’t reimagine him! Just be creative with the story, the character is already there ready to go. Invest the time in writing a powerful, icon worthy story rather than giving us a Robocop for the next generation.

A remake would suck because modern day filmmakers (and perhaps, audiences) don’t go for the same style of excessive, gratuitous violence in action films as they did in the 80’s. Rambo 4 being the notable exception I guess. I don’t mind some remakes - love the original Punisher for example, was bored by the remake; thought the original Halloween was good, loved the remake; love the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre, have respect for the remake - but I can’t see anyone doing a good job with this one.

Nowadays with this wave of remakes, the producers start ruining the legacy of many movies that had really been good, Im a Legend was bad, 3:10 to Yuma was bad and many others. I hope that Robocop remake is just a rumour.
Goatlady - see it’s not that I don’t think someone could do a good job it’s just not a job that I think needs to be done. We already have the original movie in all its violent glory just use the character in a new story that doesn’t overwrite the first one.
But I think you highlight an important point about our attitude to movie violence right now, I’m pretty certain they’d try and make a PG Robocop to cash in merchandise. Grrrr

I’m not a big fan of the petitions I think they get used too often and have lost some of their impact. I remember When Enterprise was cancelled and even though I supported them I just wanted the protesters to go away
Ronato - I think that movie makers could certainly benefit from respecting their source material a little more! I didn’t mind I am Legend though nowhere near the book!
I just happen to be sitting at the pc catching up on things as we comment. lol
My petition suggestion was tongue in cheek, but that unfortunately often doesn’t translate well without the appropriate smileys and many blog smileys are completely inadequate. Oh well. Petitions are a lot of work anyhow with all the harassing ppl to sign and whatnot.

I know what you mean about comments actually, I used to joke about not making the top 100 blog list over on dipping into the blogpond and I think it came out like I was seriously upset so I’ve since stopped LOL.
now now I take that as an offense
I’ve seen the Robocop movies before I reached the rating age, faaaaaaaaaar before.

hmm this let’s me think about which movies wíll be remade in the near future.
They’d better keep their hands off of Jurassic Park 1 for instance..or the first Turtles movies.
