Podcasting, Juno and getting Arjan’s blog name wrong
March 1st, 2008
Obviously I feel I’ve got too much bandwidth (or only a couple of visitors!) because I’m taking another shot at podcasting. Listen to me say umm several thousand times, mess up Arjan’s blog name completely (well not completely but half messed up at the very least), lump anti-abortionists with people who are anti-teenage pregnacy (??? I’m not recording it again to fix me tripping over my random thoughts) and of course share my thoughts on Juno.

Getting the vague sense that you liked the movie… just filtering through subtly between the lines there -
I hear it was wonderful?
Very clear vocal, by the way. I think we all stumble more than we actually do when we’re winging it in front of a microphone (when I do video voice-overs I like to know exactly what I’m saying and I still tend to do a gazillion takes).
I’ve come out of meetings where I was sure I’d just tumbled headlong over my tongue and been thanked for speaking so eloquently.
Anyway, cool.

It’s weird when you hear someone’s voice that you’ve been reading for a long time. I really enjoyed it though, keep them coming.

John - yeah I should have written everything out - hence my stuffing Arjan’s sites name up. I’ll hopefully get a little more comfortable with it all.

Cheers Dan - I’m going to try and do one a week. It was weird listening to my own voice - I can only imagine for you guys!!!

hehe. a ‘word’ to John & Dan. Good to get a voice to the text.
For a second I thought you had got mý name wrong instead of the blogname. Cause I tried to explain to John how my name should be pronounced, but it’s difficult. Maybe I’d need to do a small ‘how to pronounce my name’ audio sometime and put it up with a permanent linky.
I’ll most certainly check out Juno & the OST. I’ll also keep to my promise to 1: update 2: update more 3: ..update the blog’s view.
I like the way you updated the design.

Actually, I liked the make-it-up-as-you-go style (works for Indy)…
I didn’t express myself too well in the last post (see? happens on paper and computer screen, too) but I do think you came over a lot more eloquently than you feel you did. A pause that sounds cool and thoughtful to your listener will probably feel like the Grand Canyon to you, hearing it back.

Arjan - so I completely messed your name up? You certainly need to do that pronunciation guide - simply cause I’d like to know. After I listened to the audio and realised I messed up the blog name I really thought hard on rerecording LOL. So sorry about that!!!

John - I’ll be sure to add plenty of pauses next time too then LOL shouldn’t be too hard.
I like the Indy reference then too!

It’s true what they say about people artists being their own worst critics. I think you did well. If you really want to reduce the ‘ums’, One way that works for me is jotting down a few key points you want to cover in your talk. I’m not talking about much here, just enough words/symbols/letters to map out the direction of your talk.

Cheers Ian (where’s your link?) in the call centre we used to listen to our calls and counted all the umms to try and break the habit. Ummm it didn’t work.
