New on Stargate Atlantis - three people in a hole
February 12th, 2008
Yeah there are spoilers ahead, I suppose, I mean it’s Stargate Atlantis so not too much will happen, maybe they’ll talk about missing socks in this episode?
Well we haven’t quite gotten to that stage in this wonderful looking but ultimately stale science fiction show. Not yet but I can’t imagine it being far off.
In the latest episode (and I honestly can’t generate enough energy to look back at the title) we have two underused characters and one possibly overused one fall into a hole in a drop that would kill anyone. I mean anyone falling that far is going to break something at the very least - that’s if you are stretching things.
Carter, Kaylee (or whatever her name is in this - she’s the replacement doctor) and McKay push crates around in a very Tomb Raider style sequence that involved stacking them to climb out of said hole until Carter falls off them and once again doesn’t actually hurt herself.
Third time is a charm with her falling once again but this time during a tremor and then she clean breaks her leg. Oh man, I know this is science fiction but am I to believe that the first two times she fell from an impossible height that she just rolled properly?
There is a sequence though at the start that made me love Carter a little more than before, she reacted really well to a crisis and snapped a couple of orders at the doctor that were essentially the exact way to react in the given situation. Very commanding and believable.
Of course this good work is undermined when she is so totally socially inept that she suggests two physicists in a game of who would you fool around with. Apparently she is also a Clooney gal. I always assumed she was a lesbian, she just gives off that vibe in my mind, I mean there’s nothing wrong with that she just doesn’t seem straight to me. But I’m sure I’m wrong - no one else thinks it so it’s just me.
The other highlight is McKay trying to explain why he said Carter had a perfect body in what is once again a complete and utter balls up of his character. The dude has been shot at, hell I think he has been shot, he knows how to deal with other people by now.
The actors are all great, don’t get me wrong! They all work with what they got.
Thank god the writer’s strike may be coming to an end and maybe some other science fiction will come along and show SGA how to do it.
Sigh, Farscape how I miss you every single day.

Yeah, this one gets my vote as worst episode ever. I was bored to tears. Zero tension. A couple good lines, taken individually. The “flash the kids” scene was funny but seemed wrong. Certainly not worth my time.

Farscape… sigh, just doesn’t seem right to mention Farscape and SGA in the same post let alone sentence.
One day there will be a mix of all that is best from Farscape and Buffy and it will transcend Firefly and fill the world with beauty and joy… or something like that.
BTW if you want to challenge your sci-fi (aka skiffy) knowledge try this quiz on for size - http://unaboard.coalgoddess.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=19401
With mostly guess work and some help I have gotten two of them.

it sucked donkey balls. But SGA has a record of lame filler episodes. I thought 4.11 was a strong ’second-half’ opening but then they fell back into fillers. I love SG and SGA but sometimes I feel they aren’t able to fill a season with a storyline so they make a bunch of fillers to get enough episodes.
The replacement doc ís hot though!! And damnit damnit damnit for her nót taking off the shirt!!!

Jeff - the ‘flash the kids’ scene reminds me of the awful dialogue in Star Trek Insurrection - just awkward and cringe worthy. It’s a shame because I don’t think that McKay is that character. I wonder if it was guest writers? But no, it took me two sittings to finally work my way through it and it was just boring.

Marita - I know! I just ache when I think how good Farscape was and how far sci fi has fallen into mediocrity.
I got a couple of the faces - a few I groaned afterwards as the connection was made.

Donkey balls indeed. I could love the shows, I really could if they would evolve their characters and take some risks!
I think the filler episodes are safe episodes written to be purely that.
Oh and about the doc - grow up

yeah, this episode doesn’t live up to my SG1 standards… I liked some of the character development but i wanted more action. I hope Ark of Truth is as awesome as SG1 was and not like these new Atlantis episodes. I’m very pumped for March 11th and enjoy all the cool stuff on the myspace: http://www.myspace.com/stargatearkoftruth

I’ve got to sit down and watch Ark of Truth because I did really start to get into the last seasons of SG1.

I generally enjoy reading reviews of Stargate…but I must be honest with and say that you are making points not about the characters (which is more than okay and everyone is doing it all over the globe) but about the actual actors themselves where you know nothing of them or their background…..to say that you think that Amanda Tapping is a lesbian is astounding!
She has both children and a husband….maybe you should do some research before making these sorts of wild comments….there are thousands upon thousands of men out there who are drooling all over the place…
I do agree with you that SGA is simply not as good as SG-1 nor will it ever be….but to say things that are not true is awful…

Hi BillieO - before you get all upset about me saying that Amanda Tapping is a lesbian - I did no such thing - I simply always got the impression that Carter was not interested in guys. It is possible for a character to be portrayed as gay without the actor actually being so.
In fact I’m pretty certain in real life Amanda Tapping is not actually the Stargate Atlantis commander but she does play one on TV - I haven’t done any research into that but I’m safely going to assume it.
Please also note that I state very clearly:
“But I’m sure I’m wrong - no one else thinks it so it’s just me.”
So I think it’s astounding that you would put wild comments in my mouth and I don’t quite get the drooling men reference though. I can assure you that I am no ‘drooling man’ and quite frankly the opinion of such a demographic interests me very little.
Also I might add that being a lesbian is not a bad thing, of course I’m not one but they do seem to be quite happy in their lives and choices and I’m not going to judge them.
Sorry if you find my reaction to this a little harsh but you’ve assumed I’m being derogative and I’m not.
