Java, I am still your bitch

This long weekend was to be my independence from caffeine weekend.

It didn’t turn out that way.

coffeeLast year I kicked coffee to the curb but then when I started contracting on a big project that had ten to twelve hour days and six to seven day weeks I started drinking it again and dropping Nodoze. I carried this on into the next contract and have been drinking a ‘grande’ each morning and a couple of colas throughout the day.

So I wanted to drop the habit again but if you remember (if you are a regular) what it was like last time it was fairly awful and I was out of commission for three days. Then I was sickly for the couple of days following. I figured with the long weekend it would be cool to get rid of it and be back at work Tuesday.

Six hours in and my head started vibrating in a familiar fashion to a jack-hammer. The yawns began and the vision went blurry. I dropped the defences and sought out the nearest coffee house and sucked that soothing drug down.

So this is not the right time of the year to detox - surely I have holidays coming???

my mum keeps trying to get me on to coffee and directly after that my dad tells her not to get me on this drug (both coffee addicts ;) )
Not that tea is that much better I guess.

Dude! Stay away from it as long as you can! It’s not good for you and it is addictive, my withdrawals after a day show that much!

Actually tend to be more of a tea drinker myself, as it happens (the awful populist stuff that the proper tea drinkers sneer at, but which I like anyway because I’m a philistine pleb-type dude).

Started drinking more coffee last year but not drunk so much of it lately. I’m sure I posted something deep and meaningful (well… “ish”) about coffee machines on my old blog, so coffee has clearly made some impression on my life.

I developed a taste for coffee during my first pregnancy when the doctor recommended drinking it to stop my blood pressure plummeting down (the opposite of usual pregnancy advice. Managed to kick it after the pregnancy.

Then pregnancy number 2 and the same blood pressure problems and even after she was born I couldn’t give up the coffee. Didn’t help that baby was only sleeping an hour or two each night and I needed the coffee to keep me awake enough to look after older sister.

Couple of years back I was up to 20 cups of instant a day and having caffeine induced panic attacks. Who knew that too much coffee could cause you to hallucinate? So I went cold turkey. WORST EVER TWO DAYS OF MY LIFE. Went straight back to drinking coffee like water for a while, then gradually reduced.

I’m down to 3 cups of coffee a day - generally before 2pm so I can sleep at night. Very proud of myself for cutting back that far even.

Ever since snr management put in a coffee machine at work, I’ve been drinking about 5 cups a day, but leaving it alone on weekends and on holidays. I don’t think I’m addicted yet but I better be careful.

My wife doesn’t like drinking coffe but she loves the smell. We frequent coffee shops for meals so she can sit there and enjoy the aroma.

I tried to get into tea John, I really did. I’m just not cut out for it at present. Maybe if I get a nice tea set or something?

Marita - I feel for you, I really do. Those two days must have been like sandpapering your eyeballs. I know what my original detox was like. I’ve heard that about pregnant woman and coffee before, now they’re saying coffee is bad for Mums - ya can’t win!

Aw, poor you. I’ve been drinking coffee for about 10 years now - my grandmum got me hooked, she used to make heavenly filter coffee. In fact, I’d gotten into the stuff heavily in college. I’d stay up the whole night studying (yes, yes, I was a geek) with endless cups of black coffee for company. It messed up my system so bad I had to go on medication for months.

But over the years, Lee, I’ve found that it’s easier to cut back on the amount, instead of giving it up altogether. These days, I can usually go through the day on just my morning cup. Fine, two when I’m really stressed.

So, in a nutshell, try cutting it down instead of giving it up. I mean, seriously, how can you totally give it up? It’s COFFEE!

The shame is that I generally only have one ‘large’ cup in the mornings so cutting down will purely be size of cup at this stage. There are reasons why I want to quit it - primarily because it raises the blood sugar and the less I can get of that the better!
