It seems all the gritty cool Superman / Batman cross over stories have the two icons at odds with each other. Personally I see them as friends, they’re two guys who understand what each other do and why.
Superman gave Batman the kryptonite ring so that if Superman were ever taken control of in some way Batman would have the ability to stop him. He is the one guy on the planet he trusts with that responsibility.
I always see Superman as a very lonely character, people forget that he lost his parents as well despite having an adopted family, of course Bruce had to watch his parents being taken from him.
Such wonderful tragedy.

It is almost a voyeuristic shot; catching them in a moment of having a breather before the next call out”, chewing the fat about things that only they would understand. The superhero equivalent of standing around the water-cooler. I love it!
