The Green Hornet trailer

closeA lot can happen in 1 year 10 months 21 days which is how old this post is! Enjoy the post but be sure to check out the new stuff too!!

Last year when I heard that there was going to be a Green Hornet film I had visions of similar era comic book properties such as the Phantom and The Shadow and the movies that got released for them.  Perfectly well made films with better plots than Tomb Raider that went nowhere and barely did anything.  Then I thought about The Spirit and I hated myself a little for sitting through more than 15 minutes of it and decided that no matter what they did at least it wouldn’t be that!

So I was ready to write off The Green Hornet before anything was even put on film.

Then admittedly I had my interest raised when it was announced that comedic actor Seth Rogen was cast as the lead and was writing it.  I also heard at the time that it was not going to be a comedy so much and a departure from the films that Rogen had already made.  Still even though I was a little interested I also wasn’t convinced that the interest would be there for the character.

Flash forward to today and I just watched the trailer for the film and I must admit that whilst I’m still not completely convinced that the general movie going public aren’t going to ignore this completely I am more than interested in seeing it.  In fact I’m happy to say that I’m looking forward to it.  That’s a good trailer and I think it’s going to depend very heavily on the advertising that they run for it because whilst the character is quite well known amongst your harder core geeks, outside those groups I’m not sure what the interest will be.

But then at the same time I’ll admit that the trailer has me completely confused over the nature of the movie.  Is it an action film, is it a superhero movie or is it a comedy?  Maybe it’s all three and that’s going to be an interesting balance to achieve well because it’s not an easy thing to do.

It does look great though, the costumes and the gadgets all look really fun and I’m having flashbacks to The Pineapple Express which worked really well as a stoner / action film so maybe this slacker turned super hero story will work out.

I was surprised to see Cameron Diaz show up, she just doesn’t seem to be the right age bracket but then I might be putting her at a lot older than she actually is, of course I’m way to lazy to head on over to Wikipedia to confirm any of this.  She’s starring with Tom Cruise in that film I want to see, Knight and Day (or whatever – lazy remember) and I imagine Cruise is older than Rogen is.  I also don’t imagine her so much as an assistant/secretary but then I’m also happy to be proven wrong and she can certainly act given the right role and movie.

Overall I think the film looks like it’s going to be a lot of fun for me and others of our persuasion (geek) but waiting until next year doesn’t seem like as much fun!

Thanks to @HeathC and @SujoySingha for suggesting today’s post topic!

  1. I’m with you as to what kind of movie this is. I’m getting a True Lies feel; funny, but action-packed. It is nice to see the sixties Hornet-mobile, too.

However, I’m not sure about the Green Hornet/Cato relationship being like an Inspector Clouseau/Cato relationship.

And I KNOW it’s a movie, but I have to say this: having trained aikido for four years, you can’t go from drunk layabout to someone who can even simply hold their own in a fight in a few days. Heck, I’d barely hold my own and I was never a drunk layabout. Tony stark could do it because he was just a drunk and not a layabout. And he had a suit.

I’ll give it a chance. At least it isn’t Jonah Hex.

    • In fairness we don’t know what time frames the film is going to be working under -- it may be a year later which to my understanding would be a stretch anyway ;)

Stark has the suit, there was a couple of scenes in the Avengers West Coast that had Stark being trained by Captain America because he didn’t know how to hold his own in a fight and always relied on the armour.

I had high hopes for Jonah Hex and I’m now hearing very bad things about it :(

    • I think I’m in the same boat there -- I’ve gone from not really caring to being interested enough to check it. Now it depends on their advertising campaigns if I’ll stay interested :)
