The G-Force movie I wish they had made

closeA lot can happen in 2 years 23 days which is how old this post is! Enjoy the post but be sure to check out the new stuff too!!

A while ago I read somewhere that there was a G-Force movie coming and it would mix live action with animation and there was a part of me who did a little geeky joy dance performed to the sweet tunes of a Mexican hat dance.

But the dancing was premature as the film that was actually released was this:

I really wish I had been warned before I clicked the link and saw this image for the first time - it was like being rick rolled without the LOLs

Instead of what would have been the entirely more hat dance generating:

The show was called Battle of the Planets and heavily edited from the original version called Gatchaman

The company who brought out the excellent TMNT CGI film took a run at Gatchaman and produced the following preliminary trailer:

I really enjoyed TMNT and I think this would have been really enjoyable, I say would have because according to Slashfilm the film may not ever be completed.  I’m not entirely sure why this is either but I assume they’ve heard something or that the film has been pushed back over and over.

That’s a shame though as I have fond memories of that show.

Actually I just realised I have the DVDs around her somewhere maybe I should check it out again.

So what are your favourite cartoons from your childhood that should be made into a kick ass awesome CGI film?

  1. Nice to know it wasn’t just me that cried when they saw what the G-Force movie really was! Other faves for me as a kid are Mayan City of Gold, Astro Boy & Duckula :)

    • Apparently there are a few of us who suffered a brief second of elation only to be brought crashing to the ground by a hamster movie!

Last year I managed to find copies of the entire Mysterious Cities of Gold series that I plan on watching at some point.

Did you see the Astro Boy film and did it do what you wanted?

  2. I had the exact same feeling of joy only to have the rug pulled from under me… Thanks you for posting the CGI Gatchaman trailer. Although I am not the biggest fan of CGI remakes, this looked really good. They kept the cartoony vibe yet did a good job updating the look of the characters.

G-Force = Gerbils? Really? Did they not realize the possible connotations? Oh well… Great post and site! Loving the Midnight Movie Club!

    • I think the hardest thing about a Gatchaman film will be when they revert back to the original storylines, apparently Keyop doesn’t have a speech impediment in the original version.

Oh and cheers on both accounts :)

Which reminds me I have to go upload that podcast.

  3. Like the others, I felt the pain of the duping as well. Great find on the Gatchaman trailer. I hadn’t heard of that. In fact, I didn’t know that was the source name. I always wondered why it was the “G” force.

That was such an awesome show.

I’ve been stumbling around YouTube looking at Cartoon Intros from the 80s and 90s for the last two days, and I’m annoyed I didn’t run across G-Force yet -- though I guess this may have been in the 70s? Nah, it’s gotta be 80s. Crap. Now I gotta go find it.

    • The show was also called G-Force for a while when they dropped the robot. I have no idea when the cartoon was first exported either and I’m rushing to finish this reply as Baxter (the dog) is currently getting his bath and will require me at any moment.

Also let me know if you get the ‘you’ve got a reply’ message as I was messing around with it and have no idea if it worked (you may see flying monkeys…)

      • Got the message, and the text-based flying monkeys, but no visible ones.

Yeah, after I commented here I went and read a couple wikipedia pages and watched some G-Force YouTube goodness. I actually found the whole story of the different versions pretty interesting. And the names they used for the characters in the 1986 comeback were just dumb.

    • I think I should warn people with a weak disposition that youtube link is not for you.

I think I’m now disturbed enough for the afternoon thank you sir ;)

  5. Another one in the G-Force “Duped” camp- I was SO excited until…!

As for other favourites, I used to get very excited watching Star Blazers (Space Battleship Yamato) after school on the ABC.

Dare I say Kimba the White Lion, even though Disney have already done the motion picture version already, and called it The Lion King! :)

Danger Mouse, and Count Duckula (But you would HAVE to get Cosgrove Hall to do the CGI film versions!)

    Ooooh, and “Trap Door”!

Although plot-wise I think there would be a little too much stretching required for the last three to pad out a full length feature film!

    • It’s becoming more and more apparent that I’m going to have to start a support group for people who feel gypped on the whole G-Force movie thing.

I’ve got all of Star Blazers on DVD which pleases me greatly if only for that amazing song (almost as good as Ulysses 31).

I watched some of Trap Door the other day on YouTube!! I saw the series in the Post Office of all places but didn’t pick it up -- damn it!

Have you seen there is a live action Yamato coming out very soon!

  6. DOH! Now I’ve got the Ulysses 31 theme song going through my head! “It’s me Nono, small robot you know, friend of U-ly-sses…” But how could I have forgotten Ulysses 31!

Disney were bandying around a script for a live action Star Blazers in the mid to late nineties, but shelved it.

  7. Man I loved the proper G force. Although I got the DVD for christmas last year and couldn’t get through more than three episodes as an adult. You can really tell it’s cut up.

As for the other G-Force. Did I mention that Disney sent me that on blu-ray? :)

    • Really?

Did you watch it? Was it even slightly entertaining?

I was watching Robotech before I start watching them (with sidetracks to Ulysses 31 and Star Blazers).

  8. I saw the trailer of G-Force and I decided not to watch it. And I haven’t changed that decision.

As for my fav childhood cartoons, hmm, I liked He-Man. A CGI version would be really cool with all the sorcery and maxed out OTT battle between He Man and Skeletor.

The Dolph Lundgren version with Courtney Cox was one of my early childhood memories, and even though it did have its moments, even I knew as a child that it was not as good as the cartoon series.

I think with He-Man, CG is the way to go. What say?

  9. That makes me so sad :(

GForce was the first TV show that hooked me in and I fell in love with all the characters.

Ralph actually paused his Halo game to come and look at the trailer.

My girls are loving the original Astro Boy on DVD we got them. I’m trying to find the Cities of Gold for them too.
